View Full Version : fmic install..car dies and won't boost correctly
04 Slo Sti 03-18-2008, 12:21 AM 2004 STi Stage 2 Enguinity Tuned..
I just got done with my FMIC install and the car will not idle correctly or boost correctly..i think i've found the problem but i wanted a second opinion.
i checked for leaks cause i'm sure its a leak..i'm using the oem bpv. i don't have the recirculating hose hooked up so i'm sure thats why its not idleing correctly...but it won't make boost...does anyone think the bpv is stuck open...its letting air out of it when i rev it out but to the atmostphere..
i need ideas...i cannot find a leak anywhere..
its the ebay fmic
STIBungy 03-18-2008, 12:40 AM Buy or build a leak tester.
Buy or build a leak tester.
definitely. if you have to test in a pinch, you can try the ghetto leak tester. unplug the maf harness, remove the intake, and start the car. Hold a thick phone book or something so it covers the turbo inlet (choking the motor). As the engine strains to suck in air at idle under vacuum, it may start sucking air through the leaking area, and make a noticeable sound. I have had to do this in a pinch and it works pretty well. just be sure not to let anything get sucked into your turbo and then subsequently, your engine.
building a tester is better, and easy if you have $10 and time. a 2" PVC endcap with a tire valvestem is all it takes. plug up all the lines coming off the turbo inlet so you send all the air into the turbo. use a spray bottle of soapy water to help pinpoint leaks.
Lawsuby1 03-18-2008, 03:46 AM why isnt the recirc hose hooked up?? Im not positive but it sounds like thats your problem.
04 Slo Sti 03-18-2008, 06:20 AM simply its not hooked up because its not long enough...i'm going to hopefully fix that problem today...i was pushing on the bov spring and its a hard push...the bov has to be stuck open to be leaking air at idle...and i'm almost positive thats my problem...or atleast i hope...
honestly it shouldn't be leaking air out at all unless under pressure or load.. or am i just wrong?
pictureboy 03-18-2008, 10:29 AM Obviously try connecting the BOV hose first to see if it corrects your problem. You could also cap it off temporarily to see how it affects your idle.
I doubt it is leaking badly enough to keep you from building boost though. I had that same problem once with my FMIC, and it turned out the throttle body/intercooler connection was not tight so all the boost was just blowing out into the air. If this is happing to you the charge pipe going to the TB will probably get extremely hot, extrmely quickly.
Hope you get everything sorted out!
stretchedk7 03-18-2008, 10:34 AM The boost return hose will definately give you the erratic idle but take it from me since I just put in a perrin, those small leaks can be pesky, go back over all your clamps and if they are not t bolts might want to get some. I agree that it should not leak (bpv) at idle but you woould be surprised how it can affect operation, also check for vacuum leaks on the intake side, I am assuming you removed your intake, I had a small leak that caused me idle issues and a little bit of knock.
STIBungy 03-18-2008, 11:55 AM If your recirculating hose isnt hooked up to the bov, then it needs to be plugged up. Otherwise, you're introducing unmetered air into the system since it ties to your turbo inlet post-maf.
04 Slo Sti 03-18-2008, 04:12 PM i took off the bpv valve today...and its not sticking at all...i'm still amazed on how air is coming out...the spring is so hard to push in. The kit came with all the nessecary T-bolt clamps although the IC rubber couplers were to big...so i tried the best i could to use them..i revved up the car and i couldn't feel any air coming from anywhere..so weird..
i'm going to god forbid take off the front bumper again and hopefully fix this problem today.
i have the recirculating tube blocked off as my turbo xs flange came with the appropiate plug to do it...but thats getting fixed today anyway.
if all else fails guys i'm going back to my tmic :(
any other info would be great
Bad Noodle 03-18-2008, 04:18 PM You're not gonna find a leak w/o a boost leak tester. Save your self some heartache and make one for $5
PS: Soapy water help a buttload too
stretchedk7 03-18-2008, 04:40 PM Hit me up at t66evo@yahoo.com and I will listen to your issues a little better see if I can help you but first like bad noodle said build a boost leak tester or at least plug up the bpv hose since it is directly related to maf.
stretchedk7 03-18-2008, 04:41 PM Dont take f bumper off man, too much work for what is probably a really simple fix, its the perrin kit right? If i is check the long black vacuum hose that goes to the crankcase pressure reliefs.
flatthump 03-18-2008, 04:42 PM Is the BPV port on the turbo inlet open? If it were, that would obviously be the problem.
04 Slo Sti 03-18-2008, 08:17 PM finally found my problem...as someone said up at the top..check your TB coupler....
it was barely off towards the turbo side b/c the pipe is such a tight fit on the hood...it must of pushed it down when i shut the hood...
i bought new IC couplers and made the bpv actually work functionally...
everything is A-ok except for the fact that i now need something to make boost stay steady at 20 psi?
i'm thinking a boost controller since i read that going external barely helped anything
anyone care to chime in?
Thanks for all the help guys!!

Do that and you will end up with more problems than you just had!
xreign 03-18-2008, 09:57 PM boost mc butter leak!!!
NickGuyy07 03-18-2008, 10:02 PM Mine was doing the same thing after my fmic install because I had the MAF sensor the wrong way with the short ram intake.
04 Slo Sti 03-19-2008, 03:11 PM so no go on trying to make boost stay at were i'd like it.. :(
okie dokie...
after a day of driving it...i think there is a lil more top end but i didn't really notice to much loss in the bottom end like a handfull of people said might happen..overall i'm happy...
