View Full Version : What's That Clicking Noise as Soon as I Pull Away?

Anyone notice this with their rex? Everytime I put the car into gear ( 5 speed) either in forward or reverse, I hear this dull clicking sound. It sounds like some of those cars (usually automatics)where when you put it into gear and reach a certain speed, the door locks lock by themselves. It's that kinda noise, very low and easy to miss if you're not paying attention. I was thinking it might be the engagement (through the relays)of the ABS system. No biggie, just curious.

Have your dealer check your brakes. I was having the same problem with my MY98 and they tore out the pads, relubricated everything put it back together and the sound went away.

I could reproduce the problem by putting it in first, rolling slowly forward, stopping, then rolling slowly backwards in reverse. It only clicked when you started from a stop or changed directions.

Hehe, I just had this same problem in my 2000 RS... It was driving me crazy. http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/mad.gif

At the AutoX last weekend, I finally found out what it was... a 1/2" socket extension was rolling around under the hood right by the windshield wiper! http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/biggrin.gif

I guess I was not clear. The noise is not a rattling or clanking noise. It is more likely an electrical or engagement type noise. All I can compare it to is the automatic car locks when you put those cars into gear.

No, you're not going insane - mine does the same thing! I'm thinking it's one of the relays that live under the passengers' side air vent (if you have had your glove box out, you'll know the ones I'm talking about). Can anyone confirm this?

Mine has the similar clunk( I've only got 300 miles so I only made a mental note of it, no lost sleep yet!). I think mine may be related to the engagement of the clutch and changing direction. I notice it more when the windows are down,( All the time in Atlanta http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/smile.gif )

I hear the same thing in mine but I have no clue what it is. It does have the same sound/feeling that you mentioned as if the door locks were being automatically activated(although of course that is not happening)....
