View Full Version : Rock Chips FTL
guciodog11 04-15-2008, 12:09 PM hey guys!
i have a 70 mile round trip everyday to and from school. my 2.5i has been taking a beating! I attempt to avoid dump trucks and semis like the devil, but my front bumper still looks REALLY bad.
heres a pic:

they might look deep, but they're not. the paint is smooth as glass. my question is, can i use some kind of polish to mask or cover the rock chips, or do i have to paint it again and get a clear bra for it?
P.S- the car has only 6k miles on it :(
TexSurfer 04-15-2008, 12:16 PM Ouch! Sorry about that. The only total fix will be to repaint and clearbra. But you can use waxes that have filling properties to make it look a bit better. And keeping it regularly waxed will help reduce damage.

what kind of wax? i dont mind if the chips are still there, i just dont want to see them :)
TexSurfer 04-15-2008, 12:30 PM Well any quality carnauba wax will have some level of hiding ability. Also there are synthetic waxes on the market that do fill. But usually its the cheap products. Because the idea behind detailing is to correct issues and not to hide them. Thats why you see so many waxes that claim to ride imperfection. Waxes don't hold any correction ability so they are full of fillers. Problem is they don't last long and the imperfection are visable again after a couple weeks or less. But I don't think anything will hide like you want it to. They will always be visable. Try doing several layers letting each application cure before the next. Thats probably your best bet next to getting it resprayed.
Figure I'll post this here-I have my share of rockchips too and I'm noticing one or two of them are starting to rust(snowy winter and salt :furious: ) but its still fairly small, smaller than the tip of a pinky, so its not bad yet, curious if theres a way to fix this aside from removing the paint sanding off the rust and repainting it?
TexSurfer 04-15-2008, 01:35 PM Well each of you certainly have the option of doing a repair. I don't think guicdogg will want to do that many though. Paintscratch is a good place for matching the paint. Then find a chip repair guide. If you go that route and want advice PM me and I can give you a how to.

I got the same problem please help.
turbochad 04-15-2008, 07:51 PM Just have it sprayed. You are talking 300 at most.
guciodog11 04-16-2008, 10:27 AM i have a mechanic friend that could paint it easily. is there any primer (is that the term??) thats a dark color so it hides any more chips?
TexSurfer 04-16-2008, 10:47 AM There is a new product out there that you may want to look into. I can't give my endorsement since I have never used it, but it seems to be a good product based on what I've read and seen. Its called Dr. colorchip. For just one or a few chips I would do a chip repair and make it look near perfect again. But for the amount of chips shown I would say Dr. colorchip looks like a good idea. I'd say next best thing to a respray. Check it out for more info.
TexSurfer 04-16-2008, 10:51 AM This is an article I have recommended before for paint touch up: http://www.carcareonline.com/viewarticle.aspx?art=8
The product brands don't have to be the exact same but everything else is very useful.
guciodog11 04-18-2008, 11:34 AM UPDATE- i skipped school today to fix the bumper
i put on 3 coats of scratch-x, then 2 coats meguiars swirl remover, and then 2 coats of wax. wow, i didnt know my hand could hurt this much lol. anyway, it looks halfway decent now, you can just see the major chips, mostly on the hood. my friend uses these "paint pens" on his mustang that work really well. i went to autozone and none of them looked like my color. to be honest, i dont know what my car color is lol. its definitely not WRB, its a couple shades darker. Anyone?
TexSurfer 04-18-2008, 11:48 AM Regal blue pearl, looks like to me.
ruiner 04-18-2008, 02:49 PM You might also try to clay bar that section of the car with the recommended lubricant. That might help pull off some of the stuck on debris if you still have some. Cleaner wax, polish, and sealant are all recommended steps as well once you've clayed for ultimate protection :D
retroXvertigo 04-18-2008, 03:48 PM What area do you live in?
guciodog11 04-18-2008, 09:33 PM staten Island, NY gotta update my profile :)
Nitrous 04-21-2008, 06:56 PM I have Satin White Pearl... on the front bumper I have rock chips...... and black plastic shows all over the place!!!!!!!!! :(((((((((
DrnknZag 04-21-2008, 07:00 PM 17k on my '07 and I've got crazy rock chips already too......Clear bra goes on this summer....
MyOtherRideIsUrMom 04-21-2008, 07:15 PM Damn, that sucks. I live in staten island too, i almost never take the expressways though. Too many dumptrucks and 18wheelers throwing rocks. its bad enough dodging potholes
Super_HKS 04-22-2008, 01:49 PM I have a 3m clearbra on my car. its a lil noticable but not too bad. No chips, dings, anything. Works great.
Ryan314 04-24-2008, 05:42 PM There is nothing you can do for that... don't you see that the chips are white, meaning there is no paint left on that spot. Polish or wax will do you no good.
Repaint it and then invest in a clear bra. I did, and it has worked great.. especially in the winter.
mugenXP 05-18-2008, 03:18 AM i know how you feel, my front bumper AND hood looks just like that, as well as the rear quarter panels and on top of the trunk/spoiler... basically every spot that those rocks in the freeway can hit. and i have OBP which doesnt help hiding it
