One of the star cars at this weekends “Ferrari Leggenda e Passione” auction in Maranello, Italy that’s organized by RM Auctions in association with Sotheby is the grand prix winning 1964 Ferrari 250 LM. Designed by Pininfarina, with coachwork by Scaglietti, this particular example was the fourth of only thirty-two 250 LMs built. The highlight of its extensive racing history occurred in 1965 when driven by Jochen Rindt, it claimed first place at the Austrian Grand Prix.
In September 1969, the car was shipped to Boston, Massachusetts in the US and later –surprise, surprise- it was converted for road use! Its owner cover the dashboard with leather, replaced the sliding windows with wind-up windows, while he also added seat belts and carpets. -Continued
The car changed numerous owners, during which it was, at one stage, a common sight on New York freeways, being used by its then owner for regular commutes into the city.
The 250 LM’s last stop occurred in 2002 when it was bought by its current owner who comprehensively restored the car. According to RM Auctions, the Ferrari 250 LM is expected to fetch around €4,200,000 - €4,800,000 which is about $6,500,000 - $7,500,000. Guess we won’t be seeing this one on the road again.

The first true four-seat series production Ferrari was the 250 GTE 2-plus-2. This gorgeous, Pininfarina designed car handled beautifully and had the excellent balance of its two-seat predecessors. The first of these cars was used by the Clerk of the Course at the 1960 Le Mans 24 Hour race. This introduced the car to the world via the motoring press present at the great race. Ferrari took six of the first seven places.

The four-seat car introduced Ferrari to a new market: owners who regarded the two-seaters as impractical. The car was a great success, with nearly a car a day produced for about three years. Towards the end of 1963, production ceased and an improved model replaced it. Fitted with the new four-liter version of the Colombo V-12, the engine was conservatively estimated to produce 300 bhp. It incorporated some significant changes from its predecessor, including revised combustion chambers and wider spaced bores, and it was dubbed the “330,” following Ferrari’s practice of naming an engine for the displacement of a single cylinder.

Outwardly, the 330 America was identical to the later 250 GTE 2+2s and shared the same chassis. Ferrari produced just fifty 330s; some carried the name America on the boot, while others did not. The 330 GT 2-plus-2 went into production in late 1963, making the America a rare automobile.

I cant Handle how epically awesome those Ferrari's are. I'm sure the red one will fetch a cool 10 mil.

While these cars are cool, The red one isn't especially pretty, and the silver one looks too much like a DB5 to really be cool. Aficionados will like them, but it will confuse everyday people.

Having seen a 250 LM in person and a 330 America, I can tell you the pictures do not do justice to the LMs beauty. It's very much like seeing your boyhood dream girl in person wearing the sexiest outfit you could imagine.

its amazing how ferrari is able to dip into styling cues from the past so beautifully. obviously, with cars like this in your past its a lot easier.

I had a chance to see 6 or 7 a few years back at the Monterrey Historics. It was an amazing site and the sound of the 12 cylinder passing at full throttle was almost as beautiful.

Here are a few pics from this past years Pebble Beach Concourse D'Elegance. The bottom pic is of an unrestored Barchetta 166M. There were about 30 made and this is the only one in the world in original condition.

Truly stunning- words cannot describe how beautiful those cars are.
It infuriates me that we can no longer have production vehicles that aren't designed like a military bunker when sitting in them.
