View Full Version : Moldable Carbon Fiber

I have 2 1/8th inch thick 3 foot by 4 foot moldable carbon fiber. Basically, you cut it to the general shape of the object, heat it up and bend it to the shape, and then you cool it off as fast as possible and it hardens to the shape. This stuff is really nice. Theres pretty much endless parts you can make with it. Im looking to get 800 per sheet. Shoot some offers my way via pm. Pictures available upon request.

Don't mean to burst your bubble, but most pre-preg or "wet" CF sheets don't work that way. Possibly good stuff for sale, just not the right method to craft them.

Most commercially-available precursor CF sheets require elevated temperatures (200ºC and above) and a significant residence time at said temperatures to permanently affix any crafted form.

Cheers.

Gerald.

Uhm, I pretty much work with this stuff every day in a composites lab that makes areospace and space shuttle parts. I think I know how to mold stuff I work with 50 + hours a week. There are easily over 100 types of molded carbon fiber, each having the possibility of having a different type of resin injected into them. And pre preg carbon isnt injected with resin yet.

Fair enough, I withdraw my statement in light of your apparent experience with said material. What kind of resin are your sheets impregnated with and what is the weave pattern of the fibers? I'm curious about said sheets not for car parts but for other purposes.

Thanks.

Gerald.

P/s: Free bump for you too :)

If you want ill mail you a small sample.

Also to answer your question, they are injected with a acrylic based resin.

Based strictly on grammar, you don't seem like the type. And yes, pre-impregnated FRP's are already 'impregnated' with resin.

Actually, I work at Albany engineered composites in Rochester NH, and most of the people I work with don't even have a high school diploma. So basing somthing on grammar is completly stupid, and sounds like somthing a cocky male in his early to mid twentys would say. But you can correct me if im wrong. :)

And what you basically just said is that pre-impregnated fiber reinforcement polymer is already impregnated with resin. The FRP IS the resin. I don't know where you people are copy and pasting this crap from.

Patt,

Thanks for the offer to send me some samples. I might take you up on it but I'll get back to you once I review my project.

I am not trying to prove anything, or you wrong. Typically, "pre-preg" as used in industry already contains some resin to aid with diffusion limitations of the resin(s) at later stages of processing as the resin(s) is usually rather viscous.

I give you the benefit of the doubt as you also work with said materials, and each commercial establishments will use different formulations in their chemistry and technique as you mentioned. On top of that, most of it may be proprietary and a closely-guarded company secret, which is also why I am reviewing the clauses on my project before I acquire some material from you for my research.

I am not copy-and-pasting anything from anywhere in particular but can pull references in literature if you want. My PhD dissertation is in a related field; polymers.

Again, no hostilities intended; I'm just curious in your material.

Cheers.

Gerald.

Sorry, that wasn't directed twords you. I shouldn't of said "you people". Let me know when you want me to ship out a small sample. It wont be anything huge, just a 2" X 3.5" piece.

I've been selling carbon fiber spark plug wire covers for Mitsubishi Eclipse's for 60-75 dollars a piece, which are 3" by 14". So I was basically going by if I had taken one 3 foot X 4 foot sheet, cut it up into the covers (28 all together with some scrap), and sold the covers at 60 dollars a piece it would be worth 1680 dollars. So basically, I figure in the work as being half of the price, then the cost of the material being the other half, then I could sell them for 800. Again, theese have already been injected with resin, and aren't just woven sheets. Also, to kind of back up your very first post in this thread, theese would not be easy to mold as a whole, and would have to be cut up into smaller pieces to put in a oven at about 200 degrees F (not C) depending on the size of your oven.

Hey I might be interested, think you could send me a sample? Are you willing to sell smaller sheets maybe? can you take a picture of these big sheets and the thickness of this stuff next to something? do you have other thicknesses or is that the thinnest it comes in?

I could send you a sample. What size of a piece would you like? It is 1/8th inch thick. That is the only size I have available currently. I will take pictures tomorrow afternoon and post them on here.

haha I read that as 2 and 1/8 inches thick. 1/8 inch is perfect. Pm me. How big of a sample can you send me? Will I have to clear it afterwards?

No need to apologize Patt :) ; all is good.

As for a sample to for my use, I'm still a bit hesitant until I get the clear. However, if you want to send me a sample for the benefit of others and your sale, I'd be glad to run a few test to support your processing conditions/recommendations. 200 F is typically on the low side for most matrix-curing temperatures but it also depends on how long one leaves it at said temperature.

The sample dimensions you quote is more than enough for a DMTA sample.

Cheers.

Gerald.

Here are some pictures. I had to cut off 2 inches off of the 36 inch end to make a strip of samples from people intrested. I have another sheet that is 48" X 36" .

EDIT: sorry for the gigantic sizes
