View Full Version : HIDS High Beams Don't Work
vf22-wrx 07-27-2008, 06:06 PM So I finally get an HID kit, plug and play for my 02 wrx
I install them the only way possible. I have since double checked them today
Problems:
-I turn the headlights on and the low beams work (but the brights indicator on the cluster is lit up)
-I flip on the high beams and the passenger side bulb flickers off and the high beam in the driver's side never somes on (I have to turn the headlights off and then back on to get them both back on low beams)
-When the car is running, I drop the e-brake to start moving. Half the time the Passenger's side DRLs flicker off. The only way to have both lights on during the day is to turn the switch on and my interior lights come on too (which is annoying to always have the interior lights on because you can't read the clock)
I am assuming the problems are all related to a wiring issue
Can someone please offer some insight?
thanks in advance :)
jdubya301 07-27-2008, 07:12 PM highbeams dont work??? thats because you dont have highbeams anymore. when yu swap out the dual bem 9007 bulb with a single beam hid capsule, you lose high beams.
as for your other problems, it sounds like you only removed the drl resistor inside the engine compartment. you need to fully disengage the drl system by unplugging the relay behind the glovebox. search for a how to.
vf22-wrx 07-27-2008, 07:24 PM Well the HIDS I got have highbeams
well they're supposed to
and also I never tried to disengage the DRLs. I want them to stay on the low beams when the e-brake is down and the car is on. Right now only one DRL works because one always flickers out...
I just wanted brighter headlights that still function exactly how the factory intended. I hope that's not too hard to ask
any more advice? thanks
steverx05 07-28-2008, 12:48 AM You are going to keep having problems if you don't completely disable your daytime running lights. They aren't going to work with your kit, as much as you would like them to, it's just not going to happen. If you really want DRL's, just keep your new "kit" on all the time.
And God help you if you actually bought one of those "bi-xenon" plug and play HID kits. I can't imagine what could go wrong with those over time and I don't seem them lasting very long either.
And you have to remember, you are throwing HID bulbs into halogen headlights, so you can't expect to have "brighter headlights that still function how the factory intended", because frankly, the factory didn't intend your stock headlights to be raped by an HID kit
But to each his own. Disable your DRL's and get back to us with your results.

first of all, adding an aftermarket HID kit wil not help the headlights function like the factory intended. also, since you bought a dual beam kit, you are going to find that the "high beams" will suck ass. you need to do some reading in the HID faq to understand why HID kits are much worse than stock halogen lights in an 02.
it is very hard to install HIDs in an 02 that will preform like the factory intended. this is actually alot to ask. search for my fx35 projector retrofit write up and you will see why.
the drls MUST be disabled. there are no ifs ands or buts about this.
vf22-wrx 08-02-2008, 02:05 PM ok update!
I disabled the harness for the DRL's! (both of them actually)
still having the same problems...anything else to think of? I'm going to have the guy I bought them from check them out and get back to you. Maybe it's a bad part or something
thanks for the help guys

subaru3169 08-02-2008, 03:50 PM if you wanted to have more efficient lights with the stock headlights, just get better bulbs such as the ge from walmart or something.. those pnp hid kits aren't meant to be used with drls, so although you disabled them completely now, they probably have some sort of kink to 'em.. tbh though, those pnp kits really do not have a very good shelf life.. i would guess with conventional usage, roughly half the life of what hids should be
my opinion, give the hids back or sell 'em.. put in better bulbs

There are 2 'harnesses'? Which harnesses/wires did you disconnect and where?

He's talking about the two places where people can disable the DRL - one is under the hood, one is beside the glove box. But MY07's may be different from the MY02's
2007_2.5i 08-04-2008, 11:16 AM If the wiring is similar to an '07, I would have left the engine bay wiring alone and just used the glove box wire removal. But yes, there could be something different between the years.
neesejoe@msn.com 08-05-2008, 10:47 PM I had the same problem with DRL's and HID's on a non subie. DRL's are powered by low voltage, this low voltage is not sufficent to power the HIDs and will cause the flickering you described.
DRL's and P&P HID kits do not mix.
l2iceboy 08-05-2008, 11:41 PM what about those hid kits that have two bulbs? the HID bulb and the small (halogen?) bulb? can't hose be hooked up as the DRL and run normal?
vf22-wrx 08-30-2008, 09:31 PM bump for this?
mine has two bulbs...I am past the DRL's...I just want my brights to work for country roads

Those el crappo HID kits with a halogen bulb inside can't be used for DRL as well. The cheap halogen bulb is the high beam. Unless you are able to make your DRL to high beam, I doubt you can use it for your DRL.
