View Full Version : MadDad WRX $10,995
Daddy's SCP 08-12-2008, 09:39 AM 2002 MadDad WRX Project Car
$10,995
This is the official MadDaddy's car. The car I have tested parts on for the past 6.5 years. It has every major MadDad exhaust part we make plus suspension and other item. The parts alone on this car have a retail price north of $5000(suspension, exhaust, wheels, gauges, upgraded brakes, ect). The car is as strong as any stock STi. Car needs absolutley nothing. Runs like new.
*32-way adjustable coil-overs(have been testing this for the past year as a possble Daddy's SCP house brand product, they are great)
*21mm/22mm front/rear sway bars
*MadDad Velocity Header / Uppipe
*MadDad Metal V2 Catted Downpipe
*MadDad Whisper Stealthback( 3" Halfback pipe and 2.5" Whisper single tip)
*Professionally tuned by Franz Diebold at KTR Performance back when it had about 25,000 miles on it. It now has 103,500. For anyone in the MA. area you probably know Franz Diebold was the most respected tuner in the area. He was hired by Subaru to to due the engine management of their SCCA sponsored cars in 2004/2005 and is by far the most respected tuner in the area. My car still has the origonal turbo and runs super strong. The tuning is a testament to the reliability of the vehicle and should be an important consideration for anyone.
*Kartboy SS
*MadDad Ultra Series 52mm Gauge pack(boost, oil pressure egt)
*Daddy's Carbon Fiber triple gauge pod
*Real Carbon Fiber interior trim(HVAC, Doors)
*Daddy's 4" Carbon Fiber hood scoop
*Racing Brake Drilled/Slotted Rotors - Front and Rear (rear about 8 months ago, fronts 2 months ago)...almost new.
*Brand new OEM pads front&rear(2 months ago for both)
*$400 Cobolt Racing Pads front/rear (absolutley incredible - used for one track event..the only track event the car has ever seen)
*Stainless Steel brake lines front/rear (2 months ago)
*17X7" Enkei Bortex/RPM2 Wheels (only 16.1lbs each). Hyper Black - kind of like a gunmetal/black chrome. Looks awesome
*Have origonal wheels and all-season tires for the winter. They look brand new, and tire tread is almost new.
On the KTR Performance Dyno Dynamics dyno the car showed 229hp/236lbs . For a good reference a stock STi makes between 220-225 of this dyno. I will post this dyno later today.
The car is in good shape in all areas but it's been a family hauler for the past 6 plus years so it has a few parking lot dings. None of them are more than dings. There are some minor highway "white spots"(tiny chips) in the hood that I think eveyone is used to. And my neighbors cat has managed to put a few scratches on the hood(I've never tried to buff them out). That said, from 10 feet away the car looks fantastic and up close it still looks great. After 6+ years I still get comments, looks, and thumbs up almost everywhere I go.
Mechanically the car needs absolutley nothing. Timing belt was changed just last October along with various hoses and other Preventive maintenance items, in total over $1000 in preventive maintenance service. The brakes/pads are basically new and the car runs great. I'm getting ready to purchase the next project car for MadDad and that is the reason for the sale.
I'll post more pics later along with dyno scan. I'm local in Leominster if anyone wants to test drive. Please, serious inquiries only.

I did test drive an 08 STi...I liked my car better :). I really do like the chunky look of the STi but I just couldn't get past the steering feel, it drove me nuts. The steering felt way too overboosted for my taste. Combine that with the fast rack and I found it just wasn't my flavor of steering feel. I also thought the steering wheel felt really skinny for some reason, whether it was or wasn't it had a "skinny" feel. I was pondering serveral cars in the 35K range. I looked at the EVO but ruled it out because the seats weren't height adjustable..I could not believe that. At a tall 5 foot 4 inches, I couldn't even see over the dash. I was looking at a Pontiac G8 GT which I think is the best value on the market, but just a little too big for my taste, I like the small cars...which led me to the BMW dealer. I drove a 135i and knew in 10 seconds it fit me perfect. I was impressed with how much car you get for the money. Compared to the STi I give up 2 doors and my all wheel drive(both of which were important to me and a real consideration) but in turn I gain 2 cylinders, one extra turbo, direct injection, the a torque curve of a dead mean(a flat line of 295lbs from 1400 rpm on), a much better factory radio, Xenon adaptive headlights(they turn into corners and auto level), retractable high-pressure headlight washers, auto speed rain sensing wipers, 8 way adjustable seats, an interior that is serveral steps upscale in materials, and a two way power sunroof...and a nice meaty M steering wheel(given that is part of a reasonable $1000 option package that included the 8 way adjustable sport seats). I still like the idea of the tunability of a turbo charged car so this was appealing to me, and I want to start to give MadDad some extra reach and we already have a couple of exhaust pieces in the works for the 135...but alas, we are still true to Subaru. We just introduced a shortly downpipe for the 08+ STi, we have a new catback that will be out for the 08+ STi within the next 2 months, we have a new Equal length header that is going to be very popular that is shipping starting next week, and we have a couple other bits in the cooker as well. Who knows, once Subaru gives the STi it's next update, I might find myself back at the Subie dealer :) . I was even considering waiting another month and test driving the 09 WRX wich seems like a great deal with all the updates they gave it. If Subaru gives the STi an update as significant as that, they might find be back in the showroom, but only if they update the steering feel

You blew my cover :D
I did my due diligence and went to drive all the cars on my hit list which were: 08 STi, EVO X, Pontiac G8 GT, and BMW 135i.
The G8 GT in my mind is the best value, you can get that one under 30K right now and it'a a heck of a nice car for the money..but I like the smaller ligher cars and despite how much I liked it I couldn't get past the size/weight.
EVO X - I go in for a test drive, they go to copy my license. I sit in a car in the showroom while I wait...they come back ready to go out for the test drive and I ask for the copy of my license and rip it up.....the seats in this car are not height adjustable. Hello? 35K+ and I can't raise the seat height. I could barley see over the dashboard. No need to test drive.
08 STi - I could not get past the steering feel. Maybe it's great on the track but I didn't care for all the power assist at normal driving speed combined with the fast rack. I just didn't feel connected to the road the way I was use to with my WRX. I knew 10 seconds into the drive that I liked the way my 104,000 mile WRX drove better. Also, despite what reviews say, earlier model years had better materials inside the car. The dash in my 2002 is that nice soft touch material. The 08 was nicer from a style standpoint but I was not impressed at all with the interior. I think for the money the new 2009 WRX is going steal some 08 STi sales. It just didn't feel like 35K to me. Yah, I know, the money was put into the diffs...but then you could say BMW put the money in the motor(2 more cylinders, one extra turbo, DI,VANOS) and still gives you a nice quality interior for the money. Now all that said, I really love the way it looks and I was honestly hoping to be WOW'd by it. It's got a seriously purposeful look to and I really liked it...less the clear tail lights. Quibbles aside, the steering was the main nail in the coffin for me.
135i - It's a compromise for sure. The AWD, the extra 2 doors, the better rear seat room were all things that were pretty important to me and a draw to the STi..that and the Subaru Bucks I've saved over the past 5 years. So I'm giving up my AWD, rear doors and rear leg room, but I love every thing else about the BMW. It was the total opposite experience for me. I LOVED the weight of the steering, the thickness of the steering wheel(the M sport wheel). I loved the 8 way adjustable seats, I liked the stock radio 10x better, I liked the overall design of the interior, the flexible motor and I appreciate some of the other little details that I didn't even know about when I went to test drive such as the Adaptive Xenon headlights(that turn into the corners) and the headlight washers, the standard sunroof, ect., Much like the STi, its a car that looks better when you see it in person, though neither would win a beauty contest. That said, I've seen it with a set of M3 CSL wheels on it and damn don't the wheels make the car(any car). Base prices on the 135 and STi are within spitting distance. While a lot of people might think these two might not be shopped against each other, I think on the west coast they would be quite a bit, where AWD is not as big a draw. My first mod is a set of dedicated winter skins and wheels.
But don't worry, even though we're bringing MadDad exhausts to the BMW world(2 setups in development now) we're still kicking it out on the Subaru side. We released a shorty downpipe this summer for the 08's, we just starting shipping our new Equal Length header just introduced, we've got a new catback in development for the 08+ STi, and we've got a new 2.5" full length divorced wastegate downpipe being introduced shortly. We recently introduced our Ultra series gauges in a new 52mm in both STi Amber and WRX White/Green(as seen in PRoN Episode 6), and we've got samples in hand for some other 08+ pieces. I just can't live without a Whisper catback on my car...the BMW crew has no clue what they've been missing :) . I have no doubt that Subaru will up the game in a 2010 STi. Maybe with direct injection and another 50hp. I'd be the first in line to test that out(assuming they update the steering).

SickREX 08-27-2008, 12:41 PM My friend just put down 331whp and 340ftlb  on his 135i all he has is a chip can’t remember with one though it’s a very nice car very fast and handles like a dream
Roost3r 09-01-2008, 11:32 AM Took Mad Dad's WRX to the track over the weekend. All I can say is OMFG. This car hauls!
Here's a quick snippet of the last timed run.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FNEZO7Rp3TI
Car handled pretty much flawlessly. Just needs a good set of track tires and it'll be a 57sec car. Kudo's to Rich for putting together a great running car. Not only did it run at teh track for 2 days straight, but it also averaged over 26mpg for the 7 hour drive up to SLMP and the 10 hour drive back!
sachilles 09-02-2008, 10:38 AM I was very impressed with the car. It just needs a set of tires that are more appropriate for track days or autox and it will be a complete package.
Makes me want to get my car tuned.
