View Full Version : hid flicker and turn off
wrXiconZ 09-15-2008, 09:21 PM i have aftermarket hids and they have been working fine for about a year. recently the driver side headlight flickers and turns off randomly. i can turn my headlights off and back on and they work again, but this is starting to be a PITA! would this be a wiring problem or something wrong with the ballast? i checked the wiring and it looks all good, should i just replace the ballast? does it matter if the ballast is a different brand than the hid kit? 2004 wrx 8k hid
Handsdown 09-15-2008, 09:27 PM nine times out of ten, something wrong with the ballast.
a year is longer than some cheap kits last. yours are at the end of their life.
did you use a relay harness? if not, your wiring may be damaged.
switch back to halogens, on both sides, immediately. before your wiring bursts into flames. it's not likely but it's entirely too possible.

Get rid of the kit.
wrXiconZ 09-16-2008, 12:51 AM lol whats wrong with having a hid kit?
Handsdown 09-16-2008, 01:05 AM the optics aren't right so the beam isn't controlled.
read daniel stern's website.
wrXiconZ 09-16-2008, 05:03 AM still improvement over stock?

steverx05 09-16-2008, 09:58 AM still improvement over stock?
There is no hope.
Handsdown 09-16-2008, 01:04 PM next time you're reading a book i'll burst in the room with a very bright flashlight, shine it in your eyes, and yell "HID!"
light without control is bad... it's definitely not an improvement over 9007 halogen.
get hid projectors from a tsx or other OEM hid car and you'll have a vast improvement- but without control the light is only hurting you.
mannyOlicious 09-19-2008, 05:49 PM i had the same problem... it would flicker then shut off. sometimes one, then the other.... check your relays, if thats not it, then it is your ground. just reground it to the chassis. on my car, when i turn the lights on, they come on, but when i turn them off, they remain on until the car is off... so now i just keep them on and never worry about it.
robin110 09-22-2008, 12:49 AM I just started to have this problem this morning on my factory driverside hid and i was wondering exactly how i should "check your relays, if thats not it, then it is your ground. just reground it to the chassis". Sorry i am new to this and have no idea how to check a relay.
mannyOlicious 09-22-2008, 03:25 PM when you pop the hood, the fuse box will be on your right if you are facing the car. look at the picture below... the 2 yellow dots i marked on the fuse box are where the relays are located... they are exactly the same so what you do is pull them both and swap their places so driver's headlamp relay in pass. and pass. headlamp relay in drivers plug. if your driver's side headlamp is bad, then because you flipped the 2, you should now see your driver's side headlight working and your passenger's side not. in my case, however, my ground wire from the headlight was fried so i just cut that wire and grounded it to the chassis. by that I mean i took the black wire coming from the headlight and I unscrewed the radiator support bolts (look at the arrows) and simply stuck enough exposed wire in the hole to make good contact and then i rescrewed the bolts and BAM!!! it worked. the only catch with mine tho, is that when i turn the lights on they come on, but when i shut them off they stay on. I am not worried though, because as soon as i shut the car off the lights turn off and also on restart, the lights are now off so i just keep them on. if you are by chance in the socal area, i can come by and help out

robin110 10-04-2008, 12:46 PM Wow thanks for the that. I was away for work and havent been able to check back. I will try all of this today.
ishmehb3n 10-04-2008, 01:57 PM its probably the fuse. its a green 30 fuse. Happened to mine, after i changed it, everything was fine
robin110 10-05-2008, 12:43 AM In the end it turned out to be my bulb. Everyone i talked to figured it had to be something else since the bulb would still turn on. The left bulb was obviously discolored and when i swapped sides it migrated with the bulb. So in the end, I guess a bulb can still momentarily light even when damaged.
