View Full Version : Who wants to see photographic proof why you shouldnt run a HID kit in JDM projectors?
vision.dynamix 09-16-2008, 07:03 PM And Im not talking about glare.
I have 3 pairs of JDM projectors here that Im working on. 2 of these pairs came into me with H1 HiD Kits in the projector. One had the proper H1 Halogen bulb in the projectors.
All 4 of the projectors with the HiD Kits had burnt bowls. The Halogen equipped bulb had mint condition bowls.
Who wants to see the pics?
subaru3169 09-16-2008, 07:04 PM i wanna see
Handsdown 09-16-2008, 07:42 PM i'm all up IN this thread!!!
please show us. if i was anywhere near you, i'd volunteer to help do the photographic work.
is this about the beam or some kind of damage to the housing? i can see either one.
Subaruski 09-16-2008, 07:48 PM why would you ask to post the pics? just post them
eurospek 09-16-2008, 08:50 PM why would you ask to post the pics? just post them
Exactly.
NO I DONT WANT TO SEE IT.
vision.dynamix 09-16-2008, 08:51 PM Okay I only took pics of 3 of the bad ones. The last bad one I nicked heavily with my dremel, and the good ones went right back into the lamps for the owner to pick up.
I wouldve loved to have taken pictures of the output but my power supply died while testing a HID kit the other day. But while on the car, we found that output was horrible. The Halogen equipped car put out more light. Part of the reason Im swapping in S2000s in my pair, TSXs in the other.

I wanna take apart a Kit equipped 06 WRX now because Im curious as how those are..
subaru3169 09-16-2008, 09:10 PM wow..
Handsdown 09-16-2008, 10:26 PM yeah that's awful.
perhaps something was dropped into the bowls that then burnt when used? grease, etc?
definitely not surprised that those would have output worse than halogen.
vision.dynamix 09-16-2008, 10:37 PM I thought about that, but what are the chances all 4 HiD equipped bowls were contaminated?
Buffman 09-16-2008, 11:07 PM a HID bulb is only supposed to consume 35watts (unless 55w race versions), making it supposedly cooler than a standard halogen counterpart at roughly 55watts. Perhaps previous owners put higher wattage halogen bulbs in their first.
EdHilario 09-16-2008, 11:27 PM HID's running cooler is actually more myth than anything lol
Arctic Penguin 09-17-2008, 12:19 AM And Im not talking about glare.
then you arent talking about any REAL problem then :unamused:
Buffman 09-17-2008, 05:27 PM HID's running cooler is actually more myth than anything lol
that's why I said Supposedly. I suppose I could bust out the infared gun sometime and see how hot the HID bulb is :)
Handsdown 09-17-2008, 05:39 PM you should definitely do a comparison in the same conditions with the same gun at 5 minutes, 10 minutes, 30 minutes... that would be sweet!

I did end up doing a comparison just the other day as I bought a h4 HID kit for the legacy. I'm so used to my Roadmasters headlights I hate driving in cars without good lighting.
That being said I tested both a standard H4 bulb and it's HID equivilant with the car off. I tested the bulbs to 5 minutes. Out of the headlight just resting in the cold air. It's weird the bulbs temperatures would spike, every so often, but the H4 halogen bulb on low ranged in temps from 465*F-750*F (Gun was one inch from bulb). H4 HID bulb ranged from 350*F-650*F. I should note that the H4 HID was still in the Metal bulb holder that goes in the housing.

sniper1rfa 11-08-2008, 11:34 PM sticky please
ritky 11-08-2008, 11:40 PM If the HID bulb runs cooler...then why is there damage from them? Different ranges of light wave lengths causing damage?
In my wifes 05 STi, I'm noticing one reflector is getting discoloring, while the other is not. Weird
We need some more testing.
Buffman 11-09-2008, 01:00 AM Could be from UV radiation. I'd have to do some more searching to see if HID bulbs in car applications have a shielding gas/filter, but I'd imagine in a system designed for them there should be no issue. I've had HIDs in my 90mm Hella projectors for almost two years now. If I get motivated some day I'll take the bulb out and see if I can see inside in the bowl. I'll keep an eye on the ones in the legacy too.
minifreak 11-10-2008, 05:31 PM Here is a set of reflectors of an 04/05 STi (Canadian 04/05 doesn't come with HIDs) that has damages from using HID kits in them.

Perhaps those cheap HID kits lacks some kind of coating to filter out UV?
Buffman 11-15-2008, 02:54 PM that or the housings don't have special coatings to withstand the UV. I'll have to take the HIDs out of my 90mm Hella projectors. I've had a set of HIDs in them for two years now.

jtsimaras 11-18-2008, 09:54 PM If doesn't effect output---does it really matter?

They bowls I tested affected output BIG TIME. I took a saw and cut those projectors in half..i didnt even want them to add to my pile of headlight parts..
