im looking to convert my headlights and fog lights to HID. im wondering how big a job this is, what parts and tools i need and if this is something someone without much experience should attempt.

no.

your beam pattern will be less even making it difficult to see things in important areas of the roadway.

fog will also be harder to see through with HID light which is more intense and higher in wavelength, so fog performance will be extremely diminished.

don't do it.

How about street legal hid fog lights to give you more light on the road.

is simply replacing the bulbs with white leds a possibility? will that create a similar effect?

To answer the original question lol, The job is not to excessive as far as electrical or anything its pretty cut and dry, as for tools just basic electrical tools and hand tool should do, a drill will help as well. And as far as parts, just look up your bulb type and then you can buy an HID kit for each set of bulbs (kit usually includes, bulb, balast..anything needed for intsall). However your light pattern will be different and you should have your headlights aimed at a garage after you istall. Good luck wth everything.

read the HID FAQ first.

secondly, dont put aftermarket HIDs in your car. they are a terrible waste of money.

I seriously reccomend that you not put any kind of HID kit in your car! It is simply not a good idea. For specific info read the HID FAQ.

This thread is just littered with horrible misinformation lets clear some up.

1) Aftermarket HIDs are not a horrible waste of money, the KITS are a horrible waste of money. Buying a retrofit is a quite pricey, but doing a DIY retrofit is not outrageous.

2)HID's do not inherently produce light with a higher wavelength, the bulbs MOST OFTEN USED are, but you can buy HID bulbs at 2500-3000 which are yellow and around the color temperature of incandescence. However once again, the fog light halogen projectors that come on many new subarus are designed only to be used with halogen bulbs NOT HID's.

3)I am fairly certain that in VT HID kits are not legal, and your dealership likely will not do it for a on road car... however they may, and might just have you sign a waiver, it varies state to state.

4) I have yet to see any LED's suitable for replacing automotive headlights. LED beam patterns are extrmely narrow when compared to a halogen bulb, which has nearly a 360 degree pattern, where as even wider LED's have about 45 degrees. There is no safe way I've ever heard of to use LED's in a light designed for halogen.

If you really want to do retro fits, I bet you could find something like one of those smaller hella HID foglights to put in for fogs, as far as headlight retrofitting difficulties it varies a little bit year to year. If you atleast look through how its done on other models (or '08's if the info is available) you'll get a pretty good idea weather you feel comfortable enough to do it or not.
