View Full Version : horn for my scooby Laki 04-11-2001, 09:07 AM I need a good horn for my scooby. What is my choice and where can I get it? Laki gtguy 04-11-2001, 09:23 AM Hella Twin SuperTones, available from Susquehanna Motorsports. Mount them in the grille where nothing blocks the tone, and be prepared to move the world when you honk. I love mine. Kevin p.s. Someone will post a link, or just search for Hella horns Mike C 04-11-2001, 09:34 AM I bought 2 FIAMM standard horns, one low, one high. I love the difference. The only tricky part is that impreza is only wired for one horn, so you have to make a wire harness to accomodate a second one. You can make one with a whole bunch of electrical tape, but I chose to do it the right way, and crimp on some weather-tight connectors. Its a pretty simple set-up and cost me about $30 for 2 horns, wire and conectors. If you can't figure out how to make the harness, or need a bit more info, just pm me, and I'll draw you up a simple diagram. Good Luck -Mike- Subie Gal 04-11-2001, 09:37 AM get the Hellas!!! http://catalog.com/susq/hella/85115.htm painted and grill installed: <IMG SRC="http://www.subiegal.com/images/New%20RS/front%20badge%20horns.jpg" border=0> j. www.subiegal.com (http://www.subiegal.com) Peaty 04-11-2001, 09:40 AM http://www.azscooby.com/mods/AZScooby/Peaty/fiamm.php http://www.azscooby.com/mods/AZScooby/Peaty/hella.php Pics, directions for install and even some sound clips. Peaty Laki 04-11-2001, 09:52 AM I think I will get Hella Twin SuperTones. Can you give me directions for installation? Any sound clips? Laki RidinLow 04-11-2001, 09:55 AM Actually, if you walk into your local parts store and buy a Fiamm or a Wolo, your ears won't be able to distinguish them from the Hellas, but your wallet sure will!!! Scooby_WL 04-11-2001, 10:09 AM Subie Gal- How much were those? Thanks, Brent Subie Gal 04-11-2001, 10:13 AM they're approx $62 see: http://www.catalog.com/susq/ for all items, pricing, etc... Otaku 04-11-2001, 10:19 AM Another vote for the SuperTones. I put them in last weekend. They fit and look great in the grill. They wire right into the stock harness, and I was up and running in about 30min. All I need now is a Stupid Ugly Vehicle to try and cut me off...hehe Otaku p.s. I also pissed off my neighbors whilst testing these beauties. Rez 04-11-2001, 10:51 AM Once again: Hella Supertone Install (http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/Forum26/HTML/000207.html) Hey Subie Gal, you get those professionally painted (i.e. clearcoat and all that jazz) or you repaint them yourself all the time (i.e. Subie Gal has a slight neurologial problem between her and her subie http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/wink.gif)? If you are painting them yourself, whatcha using? -Rez <IMG SRC="http://www.reverberations.com/images/scrambles.gif" border=0> [This message has been edited by Rez (edited April 11, 2001).] BOB YOUNG 04-11-2001, 10:55 AM There is nothing like SuperTones. My Rs is a commuter from Long Island to CT. and having a loud (very loud) horn is a matter of life and death on I95. Mount 'em in the grill and have a "blast". Laki 04-11-2001, 11:54 AM THX Laki alan ling 04-11-2001, 12:44 PM I was told by one of the guys at the dealership where I got my 2.5RS that there is a second horn connection on the right side of the car. He said they are wired for two horns but only have the left extra wimpy horn put in. I haven't looked for mine yet but just a heads up. BJamerican 04-11-2001, 02:15 PM Gggrrrrr, don't even get me started on the horn in my Subaru! My horn is so weak it almost says "Thank you for cutting me off!" when I honk it. I desperately need a louder horn. All my friends make fun of my ***** horn too! I'm not sure about the newer Imprezas, but the new Outbacks have MUCH improved dual-tone horns. My dad bought a 2000 Outback sedan and its horn will make anything jump out of its way. It's much louder than my horn. Subie Gal 04-11-2001, 02:23 PM **painting.. took them apart... sanded primer rust-o-leum 3-5 coats these horns are also good to scare deer away... QUICK... i came on 3 deer the other night... laid on the horns... man... they took off FAST! http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/biggrin.gif j. www.subiegal.com (http://www.subiegal.com) wonko 04-11-2001, 02:30 PM The horn on the WRX isn't bad. It's loud enough to get peoples' attention (which I've had to do way too often, sadly...Oregon drivers suck). When I get home late at night and use the remote to lock the car, the horn is disturbingly loud. I keep worrying about pissing off my neighbors. :/ Darwin 04-11-2001, 02:33 PM MM.. gonna pant my supertones white. should look great behind the grill. Subiegal: You sure the horn didn't just launch them off the road? Did you see if blood was coming from their ears as they ran off? http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/wink.gif http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/wink.gif Yeah, the WRX horns are much better than 01 RS. gawd.. I need my supertones! sybir 04-11-2001, 03:52 PM ya know, I got the hella twin electric horns, but not the supertones; they seem just about as loud, and it's a more spread out pattern (less directional) don't let the cost of the supertones scare you away from hellas; mine cost $26, i think, and came with a relay; they mount up right behind my grill, and work great.... HoratioCaine 04-11-2001, 04:32 PM I bought FIAMM air horns. They work great. Plus they sound different than the disc horns. Different is good. EDIT: Oh yeah. About $35. There are directions for disabling the audible signal for alarm arming/disarming. Press and hold the unlock/disarm button, and then press the lock/arm button at the same time. Hold for at least two seconds. I think the horn will sound either once or twice to let you know it has been disabled. Repeat the process to re-enable it. Jordan adamsrs 04-11-2001, 05:05 PM I think Cobb Tuning has them also. Go to www.cobbtuning.com (http://www.cobbtuning.com) or call 1-972-771-1555. They are really nice there! adamsrs www.unnatural.org (http://www.unnatural.org) Laki 04-12-2001, 02:34 PM even Forester has better one... Laki Billy 04-12-2001, 02:56 PM Would this twin Supertone setup be as loud as a stock VW or a stock Crown Victoria? Those are really good stock horns but ours are kind of muted to say the least. wistful 04-12-2001, 03:33 PM I want an aftermarket horn too, but something with more BASS. The horn that I've heard were.. clown-like? I'm thinking trunk/boat AIRHORN. Do any of these horns offer the bass? thanks a lot. Don Kevin Thomas 04-12-2001, 04:31 PM Subiegal: You sure the horn didn't just launch them off the road? Did you see if blood was coming from their ears as they ran off? Lol! I gotta get a set of these. Can you get sued from someone if you sound off your Hellas and it gives someone a heart attack? What if they run off the road when you sound them? *panting* I really, really want a set of these but I don't want to kill anyone. Just giving them a stroke will do. J/K remarcable 04-12-2001, 05:16 PM I had a lady back up blindly at full speed out of her curb parking spot into my lane while I was travelling 35MPH. I had to slam on the brakes to the point where ABS kicked in and my knee popped. I laid on the horn and stayed behind her with the horn on for two blocks before she flipped me off. http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/wink.gif Damn thing just isn't loud enough I guess. They should be flipping me off after ONE block or less. When people do something dangerous and stupid like backing up at full speed into traffic (she had a truck parked next to her) I want to make sure they knew they did something stupid. If I have any of my tax return left over after the exhaust, ALK, and skid plate I am going for the horns http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/wink.gif slidewaysmike 04-12-2001, 05:46 PM The horn is the first thing I changed on my car. All I did was go to a local junk-yard, and grabbed the horns out of freshly wrecked new Beetle. They have a really nice sound and are very loud. Plus I got all the wiring and the horns for $18.00. I took the Subaru horn out, made my own little mounting bracket out of the VW mounting bracket, and wired up the horns. Voila!! Nice European sound, very loud, and very inexpensive. I probably could have gotten some horns even cheaper if I didn't go for the freshly wrecked Beetle. Mike [This message has been edited by slidewaysmike (edited April 12, 2001).] zzyzx 04-12-2001, 07:35 PM Slidewaysmike - You have the right idea. I have MY00 Jetta horns. They are loud, sound nice, and work nice. No air pump stuff to install for air based horns. I also don't like the sound of the Supertones - to high pitched and odd for me. Glad to see somebody else clued into the power of VW's newer horns. http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/wink.gif - Steve [This message has been edited by zzyzx (edited April 12, 2001).] slidewaysmike 04-12-2001, 10:15 PM I've always been a fan of the VW horns, at least ever since the A3 chassis came out. Thats when they started to relly sound good. Mike 2001 Subaru Impreza RS G2 1985 VW GTI -awaiting its rollcage- Laki 04-25-2001, 08:00 AM I just got them and installed them...but they sound weird ...or is it just me...did I mess-up the wires? I wired both of them to stock power... Laki bratmantlz 04-25-2001, 08:07 AM can you wire these to the wires that go to the stock horn and if so whats the relay for? Brian Laki 04-25-2001, 08:47 AM Does anyone have a sound sample? Laki m750 04-25-2001, 09:02 AM someone mentioned an additional horn hook up? Anyone find it... I'm going to check at lunch. I replace the stock (el crapo) horn with a single low tone from FIAMM sound isnt too bad, better than stock, but I need to adjust it abit as it's vibing a bit. a second would be killer too. Just a note about mnting your horns in your grill, I'd avoid it if I lived in the snow belt, nothign like continually pelting your 60+ dollar horns w/ rain / slush / ice / snow / sand / salt. IMHO Aaron AndyM 04-25-2001, 10:31 AM hey with the supertones do you have to make a wiring harnesses, or can you plug them up to the stock one, some people say you do and some people say you dont have too? Philip 04-25-2001, 02:03 PM Yes they fit behind the grill of a WRX.... <IMG SRC="http://216.242.153.40/MembersList/UserPics/3279/Horns_w_Grill.jpg" border=0> <IMG SRC="http://216.242.153.40/MembersList/UserPics/3279/Horns_wo_Grill.jpg" border=0> Philip thebusiness999 04-26-2001, 01:39 AM has anyone put the SuperTones on a WRX yet? Do they fit behind the grille? |
