View Full Version : ebay bi xenon hid kit? wade869 01-21-2009, 12:53 PM does anyone know if this kit works well or herd anything about it? with us bug eyes that use one bulb for hi/low, this kit is supose to have hi low hids? any ideas? suggestions? thanks steve bcWRX-02 01-21-2009, 01:29 PM There was a thread on here a few weeks back about a guy who put eBay HID's in his '06 or '07. The ballasts failed and his car caught on fire. Enough said. Also, it is illegal to retrofit HID's into reflector headlights. They give a terrible scattered beam, poor cutoff, and basically just blind all oncoming traffic. PARANOID56 01-21-2009, 02:07 PM yea, i would not do it. you will end up blinding everybody on the road. just put some good bulbs and a upgraded headlight harness on it. jaed_43725 01-21-2009, 02:14 PM As I understand the only way to get real HID in a bugeye is to either buy Morettes, JDM, EDM, or have the retrofitted. I know it sucks, as I am in the same position because the 9007 bulb just doesn't cut it sometimes. If only Subaru wouldn't have been so damn cheap and used actual glass and projection headlights to begin with. FourOnTheFloor65 01-21-2009, 03:19 PM Generally the way those cheapo bi-xenon kits work is the bulb moves forward and backwards in it's base. Normal single xenon rebased HID kits have bad enough light source placement. Then when you add electric solenoids that move the bulb around in the housing and that already terrible bulb placement becomes unfathomably bad. This means glare that would burn the retinas out of deer standing in the road, the absolute worst beam pattern you could ever imagine, and you are adding another terribly built part that can fail. The ballast and bulbs are unreliable enough. Adding a solenoid that moves the bulb around makes reliability even more terrible. The other type of bi-xenon uses two separate xenon capsules one on top of the other. This puts the light source in an eve worse position. The 9007 filaments are separated by like 3 mm. The bi-xenon setup like this separates them by at least 8mm. Lighting optics work on a scale of tenths of mms. Plus switching the high and low beam bulbs on and off is terrible for the ballasts, ignitors, and bulbs. HID bulbs need to say on for at least 10min at a time for optimum life span. Flipping the highs on for 20 or 30 seconds at a time like you generally do is the worst thing you can do to HIDs. Read this: http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/show...ight=handsdown And just say no to HIDs in halogen housings, especially reflector housings, and bi-xenon kits. msesno 01-21-2009, 04:19 PM Obviously you've read through it all but if you MUST get one, go with the 35w kit from lightwerkz! Even though you're not supposed to... thats a very reliable way to go. wade869 01-21-2009, 09:57 PM thanks all for your help. i gues i'll just have to cough up money for jdm, dsm, or retrofit or just get some sylvistars. Kean 01-22-2009, 04:52 PM thanks all for your help. i gues i'll just have to cough up money for jdm, dsm, or retrofit or just get some sylvistars. ....if by "Silverstars" you mean the Osram variant, they don't make them for our application. ....if you meant Sylvania, don't do it. The good news is that there are a few other high efficacy halogen bulbs now available to us. ....Osram Nightbreaker +90 and the Philips X-Treme +80 are two examples. From what I've been reading, they are both getting decent reviews. ....just some food for thought. Price range is typically $30 - $40 per pair. If only Subaru wouldn't have been so damn cheap and used actual glass and projection headlights to begin with. I agree. The USDM Bugeye headlamps are so cheap, and cheezy looking. I always hated them so much, especially seeing EDM/JDM projectors. So with that being said, recently I got my hands on a pair of JDM projectors, and I couldn't be happier! |
