Sorry, Im a n00b so bare with me, 2 part. According to stock class rules, I have to maintain stock wheel size, but what about tire size? Can I run 225's or do I have to stick with 205's?

Also, what tire will give me best autox/dd performance? I was looking at the star specs due to everyone elses experience, but some said they are too soft for dd, is there validity to this?

You can run as big a tire as possible on the wheel in stock class. Dunlops are a good choice, but will wear faster than your average street tire. Any of the top autox tires will, as expected.

starspecs are a STX tire. They are ok for a DD tire.

In SCCA, you run r-comps for the "stock" classes. Hoosiers or Kumhos as wide as you can get on the stock sized wheels. You shouldn't run these on the street.

right, but street tires won't be as competitive as r-comps in a stock class. It may be more beneficial to run a stock car in STX if you want to use street tires.

Let's put this in perspective, for $800 in tires, plus $200 for a second set of wheels, you can gain 1.5 to 2 seconds by buying r-comps over the top street tires.

If you are new to autox, you will probably start out 5-6 seconds off the pace. I'd suggest that r-comps are not a good value until you are able to shave that down to ~3 secs on good street tires.

I'd suggest that you spend ~$100 on a big front sway bar, get an alignment that gives you as close as possible to 1.5 deg negative camber a the front, then try to whittle down the gap between you and the local DS leaders.

I agree with leecea. When you're starting out just concentrate on improving as a driver first.

Assuming you are doing SCCA type classes...

With that setup, you can run in either Dstock or STX. Everyone else in Dstock will have better tires and slightly better suspension. Everyone else in STX will have similar tires but better suspension & power.

It's your call. Just jump in and get a feel for which way you want to go.

A lot of regions have an indexed class where the competitors can use their stock class, but everyone must use street tires. You could also look into that, where your car would be competitive without having to invest in the street touring mods.

I'd go with a good sticky street tire over R compounds if you're just starting out. Yeah, the wheel size cannot change, but if you can fit a bigger tire on those wheels, go for it.... Run them until you see no more improvement, then try a set of R compounds. Rinse, repeat....
