Just a quick question does the 98 2.5 liter engine in the legacy same as the 99 RS engine

like all the parts and in the engine and breaks and all the stuff........

Not totally sure, but I think the 98 Legacy has the Phase I 2.5L and the 99 RS has the Phase II. I'm not sure what that means, although I'm sure we will both find out.

No. The 98 was a DOHC engine, and the 99 RS (only the RS) has a single overhead cam engine.

I would guess that a lot of the parts are the same so that Subaru can save on the cost of stocking more parts than otherwise necessary.

98 RS was the Phase I engine...

99 RS is a phase II...

not for sure on the 98 GT's engine.. but i am guessing it's also a Phase II...

parts are compatible... very much so...

Yes, the '97-'99 Legacy with the 2.5L had the Phase I DOHC engine. In '00 the Legacy got the Phase II SOHC version.
