BlkWRXWag 03-16-2009, 02:06 PM Should be a great event - STU has a pretty tough field!
Chiketkd 03-16-2009, 02:24 PM Definitely will be a well attended tour. The BS field looks pretty stacked!
Banannie 03-17-2009, 01:49 AM I'm sooooooooooooo excited :)
Evoracer 03-17-2009, 03:29 AM I'm sooooooooooooo excited :)
Just hope no cherry pickin' ST cars enter STU!

JamesWilson2 03-21-2009, 11:17 AM Talked with my buddy running HS this morning, course is also highly transitional but with a few spots that basically make you come to a stop...I hate to say it, but that was one of the thing I never liked about the San Diego Region...huge awesome lot, and they go back to their gymhkana roots--- punish the drivers (courses 8' wide, stops, etc.) rather than focusing on element flow. Oh well. Hopefully someone will have some video.
Rain at 50% on Sunday.
Good luck competitors!
Scooby South 03-21-2009, 06:23 PM 1st Wave of RESULTS (http://scca.com/documents/resultfiles/13617_Sat%20Preliminary%20-%20R.pdf) are starting to filter in....
Chiketkd 03-21-2009, 07:36 PM Wow! Bryan Heitkotter has a 1+ second lead over the rest of the BS class. Isley in 3rd.
Scooby South 03-21-2009, 10:22 PM Toyo and Dunlop in the trophies...didn't see a Stone one.. interesting...
Berry's Evo looks to be cleaning up...SM and BSP....
looks like they are trying to maximize tires...2 + 2 +1 makes 5....not bad strategy...
-RS Leading DSP again....interesting...
Sat Finals (http://scca.com/documents/resultfiles/Sat%20Preliminary%20-%20R4.pdf)
Chiketkd 03-21-2009, 10:47 PM Does anyone know if rain was a factor today for any of the run groups?
In2Deep 03-22-2009, 01:16 AM Not today, it was sunny all day.
Tomorrows forcast calls for showers by 12pm with a high of 59*
Evoracer 03-22-2009, 02:08 AM Does anyone know if rain was a factor today for any of the run groups?
Dry, but course change after the 2nd? heat.
pignoseSTI 03-22-2009, 02:12 AM course changed after the 1st heat, and after the 4th too. Asphalt kept breaking up
Scooby South 03-22-2009, 10:48 AM ahhh...now that makes sense.....thanks guys...good luck today..
Bill
tom@kartboy 03-22-2009, 01:18 PM its starting to drizzle here at my house. its about 10 min from the Q
Tom
In2Deep 03-22-2009, 03:29 PM Yep, its raining outside for me too.
Scooby South 03-22-2009, 03:53 PM What happened to the DSP RS that was leading???? DSQ then DNS????
tom@kartboy 03-22-2009, 04:03 PM raining heavy at times. well heavy for san diego. hope they brought their rains.
Scooby South 03-22-2009, 04:40 PM What happened to the DSP RS that was leading???? DSQ then DNS????
From Annie:
"DSP car had major sound violations so was DSQ'd, not sure if they gave up willingly or were forced to..."
Storm 03-22-2009, 05:30 PM ^^^^ That sucks...... I saw a few other DSQ'd cars and was wondering. John Ames being one of them.
This is something that isn't going to go away folks....might as well make it as powerful AND quiet as possible.
Jay
In2Deep 03-22-2009, 05:56 PM What kind of exhaust did he have?
racerjon1 03-22-2009, 06:41 PM What kind of exhaust did he have?
I am not sure on him, but a few years ago when Rankins and I were running the DSP RS we had the Borla Headers, test pipe, Stromung cat back and we were high 80s, low 90s...
when we pulled the cat back for a sound test it was at 114db... a number I haven't seen even out of NASCAR Cup cars, Rotaries or open-exhaust Hondas.. When the mufflers come off the n/a Subarus, they are as bad or worse than anything.
I am also wondering what they were running out there in CA.
Jon
Scooby South 03-22-2009, 07:14 PM Congrats Max...for The WIN...and also to Annie for the final trophy spot in STU..:)
Banannie 03-22-2009, 08:00 PM After a horrible day yesterday with an ill handling car, we made some good changes that worked! I actually had the fastest time today through second runs, demolishing Max's time by 0.003 :). He got by me on last runs, by about 0.250. If you'd asked us yesterday if that was possible we would have said no way!! Great driving by all :)
Chiketkd 03-22-2009, 08:46 PM ^Did STU run in the wet today? After seeing Max win the '08 Pro Finale in the wet, I'm quite impressed by his driving in the slick stuff!!!
I have a new appreciation for all the STU drivers on this site. Drove a well set-up STU STi today to 2nd in Class & PAX at a local event today. The owner is a National Tour trophy winner, so I knew it'd be hard to best him in his own car. Either way, had a barrel of fun and got a co-drive offer for next season which I may not be able to refuse. STU seems like a great class!

BlkWRXWag 03-22-2009, 11:22 PM Holy smokes, what a crazy weekend!
Saturday, Annie and I were pretty miserable with a very ill-handling car. This was not totally surprising since it has just been built. We made a lot of changes overnight and hoped for the best on Sunday. I figured since I was 0.7secs out of the lead, I needed rain to have a chance. We got plenty of that, but when our heat started the sun had come out. First runs were wet, second were moist and the third, a few damp spots.
After the first run, I knew we had made the right changes and the car was transformed. I had a big lead, but on the second run, Clint moved a tenth or two in front, so on the third, I just went for broke. Clint was two cars behind me and came in a tenth slower, but he hit a cone and had to stand on his second run.
Annie drove great today to move from 12th to 5th, so we're were both pretty ecstatic:D
Oh, to clarify the first days results, the course was changed after the 1st and 3rd groups, both changes making the course slightly faster. There were no changes today, but group 2 got rain just after 2nd runs started and it was wet until midway through the 4th group.
Can't wait for El Toro next weekend:)
qcslvr30 03-23-2009, 12:29 AM Nice driving Max and Annie!

Good driving both of you! You guys had us scratching our heads today, we must have wussed out to lose that bad. :unamused: (Annie's hood)
Hope El Toro is a med fast course.
I was glad to pull up to 3rd this weekend.
Congrats!

piknockout 03-23-2009, 10:16 AM Great driving by all you guys, and especially Max FTW! So tell me, were the top 5 really all on Dunlops as the results suggest?
BlkWRXWag 03-23-2009, 10:42 AM Great driving by all you guys, and especially Max FTW! So tell me, were the top 5 really all on Dunlops as the results suggest?
They sure were. Wiggy was on Bridgestones.
SpeedTheory 03-23-2009, 10:49 AM Am I the only one who sees a "lemming effect" with ST tires? Over here on the East Coast, Mike King led the way with RE-11s, then everyone else in ST* jumped on them, leaving only a couple people on Toyos (Glagola, Tim Smith, who were just as fast), and NOBODY on Dunlops except for ONE STX car.
piknockout 03-23-2009, 10:50 AM It's because we're all too poor to buy 3-4 sets of tires and see which one we're truly faster on. ;)
<---Lemming
Scooby South 03-23-2009, 11:00 AM so....Toyo vs. Dunlop vs. Bridgestone vs. Nitto vs. Falken vs. Yokohama vs. Kumho Oh Yeah if you throw the Rankin factor in.... vs. Continental ..
sheeeeesh...the choice is clear....
SpeedTheory 03-23-2009, 11:00 AM That's why I'm on Hoosiers :). Although I wish I had the $$$ to play with some V710s and C71s.
Oh, so I googled the H-Stock Winner. Here's what comes up. Same guy. Maybe there REALLY is something wrong with HS drivers.

There's only been one Tour over here so far. And I think the ST/STS winners from SD were both on Toyos, no?
I think there are going to be a ton of people on Toyos this year now that the 225's are out.

BlkWRXWag 03-23-2009, 12:31 PM And do I see a lack of Union Jack?
No, the guy I sold my car to, took them off. Annie then bought the wing off him. On Saturday, Annie put her special graphics on, which were ripped off for Sunday!

If any other lemmings want to follow us off the cliff, talk to me about wings. ;)

Patrick L 03-23-2009, 01:21 PM What kind of exhaust did he have?
At Nats last year he was running no cats with a custom cat back that exits out the right side. I think they have a Teckworks header. I never had a problem with my exhaust with the 95db limit at Arrowhead in KC. I run a Borla head, catless track pipe and an OBX cat back that has a resinator. I dropped the muffler before and got the db's up over 100. That sucks if they got DSQ'd for that. Was there a posted limit in the supps for that event?
BlkWRXWag 03-23-2009, 01:24 PM What, you didn't like the super special mod Max?
Errr.... no!! It doesn't hep that my other car is a Miata!
Anyway, the car sucked so badly on Saturday, Annie and I called them the "Understeering Fairies" and ripped them off. Seemed to work:D

yes...right on the main event info page......but yeah that sux for him...
Hey Pat...do you remember how the car was (setup wise)...was it decent or was there 'room to grow'...
Jon K and Steven was kinda curious..
Bill
First off congrats to Max, Rick and Annie for trophying at the event.
My next comment is whats going on with this wing rule? Car #32/132 doesnt have a wing at all. It does look like it has a STi limited wing. But its not a 07 STI limited so isnt this against the rules? They didnt trophy but if they did would anyone have protested them? Check the link for pictures:
http://public.fotki.com/makofoto/2009-auto-cross-sol-2/san-diego-tour-2009/img2723.html
Same goes for a EVO which is def not a RS:
http://public.fotki.com/makofoto/2009-auto-cross-sol-2/san-diego-tour-2009/img2724.html
Not trying to call anyone out but just wondering if these people were approached. I have no problem with people coming up with crazy ideas to beat the rules (S1MPSONS) but this seems to be a clear violation.
mccanixx 03-23-2009, 01:30 PM It kinda sucks that I was just out there the 6th-10th. There was something going on there that weekend, Sat & Sun, but I don't know what. We drove by I said "look Auto-x". My wife then  at me.
I tried to change the trip to the 20th - 24th believe me.
Chiketkd 03-23-2009, 01:53 PM No, the guy I sold my car to, took them off. Annie then bought the wing off him. On Saturday, Annie put her special graphics on, which were ripped off for Sunday!
You're a bigger man than me Max. I would have ripped them off Friday!
Love you to death Annie, but fairies?!

I'm sure had those guys been in the trophies, words would have been exchanged and forms submitted! But they were both pretty new to the sport and just there for fun.

I wish we had kept them on for Sunday now, would have been cool to win in the "Barbie" machine!
After Saturday though, I believe Annie said, "F*** the fairies".
Storm 03-23-2009, 02:09 PM ^^^ Did you ask if there was time to F*** both of the fairies, or just one?
I think y'all should grab the decals of a Barbie car and have it reproduced to fit the STi!!!!
Good job both of you!
Jay
piknockout 03-23-2009, 02:12 PM The "understeering fairies"...hilarious! :D
Agreed Iman, at least some attempt should have been made, at least an Andy Hollis special tape wing. But if they're new and slow, you just make them aware of it and move on. But I am jealous, that white one is how I want mine to look. :(
Patrick L 03-23-2009, 02:24 PM yes...right on the main event info page......but yeah that sux for him...

I think they had room to grow. Probably in suspension setup.

madlib 03-23-2009, 03:02 PM Since the rain started coming down by our 2nd runs and the cloud cover coming down,
the changes I made were not enough to quiet the car enough.
(93.8 db, 94.x db, 93.8 db then DSQ)
DougM 03-23-2009, 03:08 PM Nice driving Max and Annie!
I second that! congrats.

This is what happens when Max jokes one too many times "you aren't going to show up at San Diego with pink graphics, are you?!?!" :D
The guy who bought his old car works for Mattel (Hot Wheels and BARBIE) in the graphics department - that's awful handy in times like this :disco:

Storm 03-23-2009, 05:14 PM You totally should...... and see about "Ken Hair" helmet graphics for Max too!!!:banana::banana:
Jay
This is what happens when Max jokes one too many times "you aren't going to show up at San Diego with pink graphics, are you?!?!" :D
The guy who bought his old car works for Mattel (Hot Wheels and BARBIE) in the graphics department - that's awful handy in times like this :disco:
Patrick L 03-23-2009, 08:41 PM Since the rain started coming down by our 2nd runs and the cloud cover coming down,
the changes I made were not enough to quiet the car enough.
(93.8 db, 94.x db, 93.8 db then DSQ)
Crap!
I just noticed the 93db@50' limit. That sucks man but good job on the finish.
Any idea why they had such a low limit? 50' is kind of ridiculus.
madlib 03-23-2009, 11:18 PM The stadium is surrounded by condos and houses. So, speculation is, some time in the
past, one of the residents complained about the noise.
However about two years ago, at the same time as the tour, there was a drifting event
on one of the other lots without any noise regulations.
chopsmcgraw 03-23-2009, 11:56 PM Doug and I were greatly looking forward to trying to catch you on Sunday, the DSQ took any validity out of the result in my mind.
In an great display of the spirit of this sport, the De Los Reyes boys were all over offering help as we frantically changed to rains before Doug's last run, despite the DSQ. You guys rule, it's a pleasure running against you. Now sign up for the Pro Dammit.

I am guess you were over the limit the first and tried to correct it but with no luck.
JamesWilson2 03-24-2009, 12:54 AM I was the Sound Chairman for two years for the San Diego Region. Rule of thumb--- any time you get DSQ'd for sound, PROTEST PROTEST PROTEST!!! There are specific guidelines on meter placement, measurement, etc. and they are most always incorrect, giving false loud readings. I guess it's too late, but I should have posted it earlier. Poop.
madlib 03-24-2009, 01:13 AM Yeah, I was surprised when I made changes by putting in a baffle and the reading was
even louder. Live and learn.
Thanks Elliot. I was hoping for more of a battle also since it was so close, but I guess
we'll just to wait to run against you and Doug at the Socal Divisional.

makofoto 03-24-2009, 01:26 AM I don't think anyone mentioned that Greg Peng won STX beating fellow WRX racer Mihai "Subaru," The Dirty Rumanian and Derek Punch's BMW ... that's been quite fast lately. Greg was already leading Derek after a dry Saturday. Mihai took advantage of the rain to catch up to Derek.
(note how stock Greg's STX WRX is ... hardly any go fast decals!!!)

Greg stood tall last year already, winning STX over Mihai and Seb:

The gearing really helped with climbing the hill and coming out of the slow corners.
