View Full Version : Project XT6
Kevin Thomas 05-21-2001, 04:07 PM With all the talk of the new WRX, STX and 2002 SVX, I took a long journey back to the darkside today with the purchase of Project XT6. It's got some mileage on it but inside and out, it's in great condition. As soon as I get my turbokit uninstalled on my OBS, Project XT6 will began it's slow transformation. And of course it's an automatic. Muhaha! MUHAHA! MUHAHAHA!
It'll be a shame if I can't manage to break into the 16's. Lol!

Right on! That's gonna be so cool!
Hey, what's up with that steering wheel?
whoops, double post.....

I still never got to see your OBS run http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/frown.gif But this is gonna be just as fun! http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/smile.gif
Samirr76 05-21-2001, 05:25 PM Yeah whats wrong with the steering wheel? http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/lol.gif Ummm new wheel dude, go to Pep boys get the $39 racers wheel. The 3 spoke one with the holes in the spokes. Anything would be an imporvement http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/biggrin.gif
Akirasoft 05-21-2001, 05:31 PM no way man, that steering wheel is cool as hell. For distinction at least http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/smile.gif
Dirt Man 05-21-2001, 06:38 PM You gotta love 80's era Subaru styling!http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/tongue.gif
North Ursalia 05-21-2001, 06:59 PM Yes, but that 80's styling also comes with a .29 Coefficient of Friction due to drag. You can make an XT quick as stink much easier than the RS or OBS because of the low drag. http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/wink.gif

Don't run naked through a snowbank... you get frostbite in the WORST places!
8Complex 05-21-2001, 07:00 PM Damn that is clean! I was confused by that wheel at first, but I think I like it. Wonder if it'll fit on my RS. http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/wink.gif
Take it to the track and see what it does stock before you do anything. I think you'll break down into those 15's relatively easy. http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/smile.gif
I didn't say I didn't like the steering wheel. In fact....hmmm. Yep, it belongs there. It seems to fit the whole "future of the past" kinda theme that the car has.
ivbdn 05-22-2001, 01:28 AM I'm not quite sure what to say except that I know you'll kick ass!
Kevin Thomas 05-22-2001, 01:50 AM You think the steering wheel is wierd inside you should see the rest of the interior. Climate controls near your right armrest. Winshield wiper and light controls on the left and right side of the steering wheel. Cruise control on the steering wheel. One wiper blade. Cybrid Steering, Pnuematic suspension, wierd shape, oil pressure and volt meter on the upper left and right side of the dash, telescoping and adjustable steering wheel. Wierd and I love it.
Just trying to use the theme where everyone takes an older model and bring some potential to it like the Mustang and Camaro crowd guys be doing. Even if the car stays dog slow, I'm still happy with it. I just don't want to have any car payments after paying my OBS off, on a WRX. You guys are paving the way performance wise for that car nicely.
I'll bring it out to some of the meets so you guys can see how wierd it is. http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/biggrin.gif I just hope the 6 cylinders like to breathe when opened up.

:http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/biggrin.gifrools a la homer:: mmmm....H6...mmmm
omahasubaru 05-22-2001, 08:45 AM Based on the intake and exhaust on my friends XT-6.. I'd say that motor loves to breath... can't imagine it with a good turbo set-up! Get an XT Turbo hood if you can. It's adds a little more style and some cooler air as well.
What's your plan. Tell me the suspension as the air suspension is known to be nothing but trouble. If you want some suspension info.. PM XT-6wagon.. he gave me some good info for my friends car. BTW The XT-6 is a very quick car stock. My friends auto can keep up with me some, definitley has more up top than the RS.. A secret and a better performer than the XT turbo.

Samirr76 05-22-2001, 08:54 AM I was just pulling your leg about the steering wheel. Probably not the most comfy place to keep ur hand ona long trip but hey weird + fast = a great combination!
Rich L 05-22-2001, 09:48 AM LOL!
Kev I agree with you 100%
Why waste money on stinking car payments when you can be using that money for custom engine work and a custom turbo kit **wink-wink** to fight for truth justice and the American way!http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/lol.gif
and to suck the life of of a few Mustangs!
Tkacik 05-22-2001, 11:50 AM Cant wait to see what you do with ithttp://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/smile.gif
bluesubie 05-22-2001, 12:09 PM The end of the V8 killah OBS? http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/frown.gif
No replacement for displacement I suppose.
Now hurry up and switch that turbo! http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/biggrin.gif

XT6Wagon 05-22-2001, 12:17 PM Well things that work are tossing the airsuspention if you have it. A set of 90 or 91 legacy coilovers in front, and if you can find the koni coilovers for the 85-90 sedan would be a sweet setup. It also removes ALOT of wieght.
Next up is the exaust, unless you plan on going turbo.
After that its all a bunch of custom work that is $$.
I willl finish with the idea that buying a spare pair of heads might be the way to go, as the heads NEED to be worked on for any kind of HP. Mainly you need to convert it to solid lifters, ceramic coat the exaust ports, possibly reduce the size of the exaust port that only has the single cylinder, and clean up the intake side.
I doubt a cam will do too much to a stock car as it has the hottest cam that subaru put in a car of that era.
jetfire67 05-22-2001, 12:36 PM hey kev,
bring it to the street races this friday night! http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/biggrin.gif looks awesome, man!! cant wait till you're done w/ it!!
XT6Wagon 05-22-2001, 10:35 PM Um, unless a medical condition prevents it, switch to the manual. The XT6 had the best Auto of that era, but its a far far cry from what is in your OBS. Now remind yourself that bone stock with all its power restrictions it still puts out as much as the OBS did....
So a few mods will have it crying.
That is good news that its FWD, as they didn't have the stupid air struts.
Does the XT6 have the flapper door or the MAF?
KEVINL 05-22-2001, 11:50 PM Sweet that used to be my drem car In their day they were as fast as a 2.5RS. I have read several places they have huge injectors and the turbo 1800 7.7:1 comression pistons thats why they made no power but slap a turbo and run high boost and the ER27-T might be able beat the low boost EG33-T

Kevin Thomas 05-23-2001, 01:18 AM I can't drive the car yet until the end of this month because I don't have the $$ right now to pay for the insurance, tax/tags/title.
I have the FWD version so that pnuematic air suspension doesn't apply to me, according to the car's manual.
Here's a brief plan of attack in the early stages.
1) I'll be purchasing a K&N air filter and also a new air filter and compare performance both at the track and on a dyno. The car will be dyon'd at European Racing Technologies (1-302-633-1157) for $125.00 an hour. I'll only need one hour for this. http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/biggrin.gif
2) This isn't performance related but the oil and tranny oil will be changed to synthetic at some point.
3) Benchmark Transmissions (1-302-792-2300...Sound familiar?) in Claymont, DE is going to install a valve body ($300-$350) and an upgraded torque converter ($450.00-$500.00) on the car. He (Mike Neubaurr--shop owner) stated that I may want to refreshen the tranny up with the torque converter upgrade. $$sigh-help$$ During this time, I'll ask if RalliSpec can install a Hayden Type 403 tranny cooler.
4) At this point I will be getting some type of Flowmaster exhaust and get Meineke to fabricate a 2.5" exhaust. Hopefully I don't forget to dyno the car after this is done. Once I get to this point (It'll be awhile since wifelady is furious about this...hehe), then I'll decide where I want to go from here. I'm taking your advice XT6Wagon about the internal work.
This is going to hurt my pockets but oh well. If anyone has done something similar to this vehicle, please don't hesitate to fill me in. I'll be reading up on all the WRX's and Cobb Tuned N/A 2.5RS's in envy. Hopefully the car starts to move a little better. We'll see! Thanks for the posts.

I wanna see you race against XT6Wagon. Assuming his car is running. http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/tongue.gif Of course he would smoke you. http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/cool.gif
Naz53 05-23-2001, 05:28 AM Kevin,
Glad to see you picked up the XT6, let me know if you have any questions. I have a set of manuals for electricals & mechanical parts of the XT6's so I can probably find most things in them. How come you're taking your Outback apart, are you getting a WRX? Seems like you'd leave one turbo car together. Good luck with the XT6, glad to see I'm not venturing out alone with mine.
MikeYOX 05-23-2001, 07:07 AM I love that car, and just for comparison, the current Corvette has a drag coefficient of .29, and the 5000 hour wind tunnel tuned F360 has .32.
Pretty damn good for a decent priced Subie that existed before bodies were designed completely on computers.
Paisan 08-26-2001, 11:45 AM Well Hopefully he'll back on track with my XT6. It's already fast as all get-up, I beat every WRX at the last Auto-x in Albany (except for the ones running R-compounds) No replacement for displacement (and low end torque :) )
-mike
jim-bob 08-27-2001, 12:31 AM wow. you're my hero for the day, kevin. i love the xt6, and have been looking for one myself for a little bit now. it'll be interesting to see what you end up doing with it..
subysouth 08-27-2001, 05:07 AM Is that a Prelude?

Mike,
I'm not so sure it was the car. Maybe it's because you are a kick ass driver. :D
