View Full Version : Wendover ProSolo 4/25-26

The Wendover ProSolo replaced Alameda on the SCCA ProSolo Schedule about a month ago. It takes place on some sweeeet concrete in the middle of nowhere -- Wendover, Utah, on the Utah/Nevada border. Others would recognize Wendover as the home of the Bonneville Salt Flats, where the yearly pilgrimage known as "Speed Week" is held.

Who is going?

And, more importantly, is anyone entertaining thoughts of a co-driver? I'm specifically looking for an ESP ride. I can't drive out there this year (not in April), so I'm kinda on my own for a ride.

Oh man that's a long drive from Houston...did it last year, won the Super Challenge, but dang that's still far. And I'm broke.

That doesn't mean it's a "No". :)

I'm going =)...

If I thought I had the tires for two drivers, I might entertain a co-drive. But my tires are looking slim and I think the concrete WILL kill them. I'll be bringing backups, but they're old and used as well. anyone got more spare 285's?

I'll likely need my spares for the Lincoln the week after...

I never had a problem with tire wear at Wendover, the courses were never such that you could really overdrive enough to tear them up....very flowing and forgiving IMO. I think Karen did have to flip a Hoosier last year.

Yeah, we flipped the fronts, but then again, a DS WRX has no camber. :)

If I can get a good deal on 285/30/18 V710s before then, I'll probably be there.

I haven't which is why I want to make it there. Plus it's the second closest pro-solo to me. I haven't run a pro-solo yet, but I have good RT and am decent at launching. Also, I suppose casinos can't hurt the whole mix either!

Wendover was my first Pro, back in 2001. Steve Wynne dragged me there. I was running my 2.5RS in G-stock, when Fauth and McCormick were still running their Type Rs in GS. I think I was running Yoko A008RSII tires I got cheap off Tom Kotzian. Anyways, I was hooked on concrete, and Pros.

A year later I dragged Sean to Wendover for his first Pro too. He ran his mildly prepped STS car in DSP on some ancient ass Victoracers I had given him.

Glad to hear tire wear isn't that bad. I raced there last year in a friend STU m3 and couldn't tell much tire wear other than they got FRIGGIN HOT!. Should be cool(er) this time a year though

So would running my old (OLD!) v710's with a lil under 2/32nd's be ok?

It doesn't sound like there are many good tire change places in town, but I'll likely be bring my spare (even older/harder) tires JIC.

If you aren't hard on tires, you can try it. My car in DS trim tore up tires on the edge, but being camber challenged, it would do that on asphalt too (just maybe in twice as many runs).

There's one. If, horror of horrors, you need it, they close at 5PM on Saturday, and are not open on Sunday. Ask Charlie Shelton for where it is specifically, as it's evidently hard to find if you don't know where to look.

is there still contingency in bump classes?

BTW,

anyone know where to find the info on bump classes. I remember finding it once...

I'd REALLY like to win a tire if I find some used hoosiers to put on this week.

I'm tempted to run in SM since there's only 2 of us in ESP.

CamaroFS34
04-16-2009, 03:23 PM

Yes.

The information would be in the ProSolo rules. Bump 1 (B1) is all of the stock classes except SS, plus ST and STS. Bump 2 (B2) is everything else.

Drew,

Who's entered in SM? Are the Berry's running in BSP? Has BSP made a class - if not they typically switch to SM.

Based on your driving at Nats (finished right behind Burdette), you could probably do just fine in SM. If a top driver(s) shows up though, all bets are off.

04-16-2009, 06:59 PM
The only people I know in SM that I'm a lil worried about are locals I race with all the time (the faucetts). I beat or come close to their times on local courses fairly often.

BSP doesn't have a full class, neither does CSP (tom kubo) or FSP (another local iain mannix). Berry's ran in the bump class last year...

I'd have to compete against them either way if they move to SM

I'm registering/teching early sat morning so maybe I'll know what class everyone's in by then?

Banannie

Tom Berry/Marshall Grice wouldn't go to SM for Pros, they'd go Bump to get BSP points :)

I won't have any contingency... Found no tires. Gonna be on my 05 kumhos still with my fingers crossed they last (my backups are even older/harder)...

I don't really care about the points. I wouldn't mind getting a trophy =). i'd make 9 in SM so 3 chances at a trophies...

What I hadn't really thought about till just now is if I make it into the challenge... I'd prefer the esp pax.

I don't know if I'm allowed to talk to people who drive civics now. I though there was a carification of the rule that past recently =)

:unamused:

If you are planning to do the Finale, you should run ESP. I think you need to have 2 events in the same class to qualify, regardless of points.

Currently, the only other ESP driver is one of our local guys with a wagon. He's kinda new, but coming along pretty well. I think he uses BFG R-comps. It'll probably be bump class for the both of you though.

If you don't care about points or the Finale run SM, I think you have a good chance against the current entries.

Max drove awesome :) even with the stress of having to deal with my car being broken most of Sun AM...

... I lost a brake line on my first Sun run - thankfully one of the AS STI's was willing to let us pull one of his stock lines to borrow for Abe and Max's runs, then the challenge runs. I then had to limp the car with three brakes to SLC.

Thanks everyone - what a blast that was!

I really want to thank Annie for letting me have the chance to win. I knew she had a plane to catch and we needed to return the borrowed brake line, so I asked her if she wanted me to lose in the Super Challenge. Her response... "Hell no!!".

Huge thanks to Tom Hardy for lending us a brake line off is AS STI - what a great gesture.

Also thanks to Abe Potter for doing all the mechanical work to get the car working again so quickly.

Everything definitely went my way this weekend - lots of luck involved to win a SC as I had two cones on one run, but the other guy hit three! Winning STU was pretty touch and go as well, as the top four were all really close.

More later - I've got to work and I just woke up!

Hayter Feels the Love at Wendover ProSolo
04/30/2009

Photo:Vince Heptig

WENDOVER, Utah (April 30, 2009) – Mother Nature played some cruel tricks on competitors for the second Tire RackŪ SCCA ProSolo Series event of 2009 in Wendover, Utah. While most were expecting 100 degree-plus weather at Wendover Air Force Base, what they got instead was freezing temperatures, wind and the threat of snow. Unphased by it all, Max Hayter, of Trabuco Canyon, Calif., walked away with the Super Challenge victory.

Entered in Street Touring Ultra, Hayter first had to take on Geoff Clark, of Monroe, Wash., in a WORKS/GiroDisc Mitsubishi Evo to claim the class victory. Clark held a 0.093-second lead over Hayter heading into the final heat on Sunday. Every second Clark would gain, Hayter would match in the ChaseCam/Fordhal Motorsports Subaru WRX STi. The two had one red light each and one cone penalty each, and when the final times were tallied, Hayter had the win by a slim 0.030-second.

When it was time for the Super Challenge, who did Hayter line up against in the first round? Clark of course! Hayter proved the STU results were no mistake, by beating Clark again, then advancing through the bracket to the final round where he beat Bump Class 1 winner Paul Brown, of Los Alamos, New Mexico, driving a Isotope Wheels, Automotive Pros Toyota MR2, to take the Super Challenge win.

The ChaseCam Bonus Challenge went to another STU Subaru in the hands of Kevin Schultz, of Morgan, Utah. Driving a KFSIncorporated Subaru WRX, Schultz beat D Stock competitor Curtis Eames, of Meridian, Idaho, in a Bubblicious Audi TT Quattro.

Ken Motonishi, of Orange, Calif., earned his second Honda Tuner Challenge in-a-row behind the wheel of his Street TouringŪ Team Toyo Honda Civic Si, but lost out to D Stock driver Kinch Reindl, of Denver, Colo., and his MaxQData Evolution Schools Acura ITR for the Top Eliminator prize.

As the Ladies Challenge competitors rolled onto the grid, light snow began to fall, the only precipitation to hit the courses on Sunday. After finishing third in Ladies Class 1, Leslie Cohen, of Cardiff by the Sea, Calif., got sweet redemption in the Ladies Challenge. Driving a C2 Motorsports/Leslie Cohen Design Honda Civic Si R, Cohen kept her cool in the final eliminator against L1 winner Meredith Brown, of Los Alamos, N.M., who got a bit carried away and missed three gates before the finish, handing the win to Cohen.

Honda Tuner Challenge Top Eliminator winner Reindl was involved in one of the best class battles of the weekend, D Stock. Reindl was mired in eighth at the start of Sunday’s competition, but dug deep and rocketed up the standings to first before his final left side run. That’s where Reindl’s balloon burst, as a cone penalty sent him back to third. Kevin Dietz, of Federal Way, Wash., would take the DS win in a MaxQData Evolution Schools Chevrolet Cobalt SS by 0.061-second over Alex Muresan, of Santa Clara, Calif., and his www.ltbmotorsports.com Acura Integra R.
Ladies Class 2 was another close one with the usual suspects: Christine Berry, of Alta Loma, Calif., Annie Bauer, of Renton, Wash., and Beth McClure Strelneiks, of Cedar Park, Texas. After finishing second at El Toro, Bauer got her revenge in the SurgelineTuning/Cobb/Fordahl Motorsports Subaru WRX STi, beating McClure Strelneiks’ Jungle Cat Racing/Hoosier/7Parts Mazda 3-Rotor by 0.247-second.

The next Tire Rack SCCA ProSolo Series event is practically upon us. The Lincoln Airpark, in Lincoln, Neb., will host the third ProSolo event of the season, May 2 – 3, as a preview for the ProSolo Finale, September 5 – 6. For full results from Wendover and more information about the Lincoln Nebraska ProSolo, visit www.scca.com/solo.

What was really cool about the guy that borrowed you guys the brake line is that not long before he did that, he was talking to a few of us in impound about how the thing that surprised him most about the solo community is how helpful everyone is to everyone else.
