(2005 sti)

So very intermittently, when driving, where the odometer is, it will flash "ILL 4". I know that's the brightness for the cluster, but it randomly flashes it on its own.

It sounds like its a loose connector or its possibly getting shorted somewhere?

I don't feel like staring at a wiring diagram trying to figure out that circuit.
Does anyone have any ideas on where to look? Anyone run into this before?

the knob where you change the illumination could be loose and barely make a connection now and then
