View Full Version : May Subaru Meet

WRXnFX
04-22-2002, 05:20 AM
We have been kicking around the possibility of a May Subaru meet in Fairbanks. What does everyone's schedules look like? Can we get some ideas from the Fairbanks guys on dates and meet location.

If we can't get this together, then maybe a meet out at Palmer?

****UPDATE****

The next Subaru meet will be at 1pm on May 19th. We will meet at Point Woronzof with an alternate location if the parking lot is full or too small for us all. The alternate location is at the parking area at the end of Postmark Dr. on Northern Lights. Depending on the direction you are travelling, it is the parking lot after Earthquake park. Then, we will drive to the China King Buffet on International.

May 18th is the Sullivan Car Show. If you are interested in setting up a few cars to represent the Alaskan i-Club chapter, then let me know.

I think the fairbanks Idea is a good one. Denali just got like 4 feet of snow so it will have snow for awhile. But, i would go to drive a distance and take some awesome pix :D .

That would be a pretty good drive. I think it might be a small group going up. I think we should plan around the same time the autocross goes up there. http://www.contrabandent.com/cwm/s/contrib/ruinkai/dazeda.gif

Nada for me, too much stuff going on with the SCCA at present. I think that the FAI contingent would like to have a meet, but I just can't do it right now...

I wouldn't mind going, as long as there's a pub with Guiness up there, I'd be set. (well, OK, maybe some other things would be nice too  )

I agree that it would be a much smaller turnout than normal, although we could meet at the typical Sears lot, shoot some large group pictures, then caravan from there. Or we could bring up the midway meet idea again, like meet around Talkeetna or some other middle of the way town, equi-distance between us and them.

I'm not sure if Talkeetna is a Equi-Distant location. All good ideas.

Where are the Fairbanks guys? We need their input.

Talkeetna isnt exactly half way:) but Cantwell or Denali are...in Cantwell theres a huge pull off with no guardrails and some really nice scenery to take a group picture....

I'm up for at least going half way.
Cantwell or Denali are good options.
It would be great to see a few come all the way up here. If I could get confirmed numbers I could start to look for possible places to eat and drink. Many good choices there.
Let me know
Thanks

Yeah, I pretty much figured Talkeetna wasn't exactly half-way, it was just the only place I could think of that was between.

If I remeber the date correct for the Tanana event, that would not work for the Faribanks trip for me.

I will be out of town in Vegas, and I think that Eric and Winslow will be down in Vegas with me. Not sure of the exact dates, but June is not going to be a good month for me.

But I am definately down for a road trip to Fairbanks, or somewhere in between.:D

Count me in.....Kris

We should do a meet in town then head out to Fairbanks. We'll have to narrow it down to a compatible date.

A Fairbanks meet would be good, there are alot of Subies here. The meet could get alot of people interested. Need too make up a I-club flier and pass em out when you see a subie  .
A June meet would be better, the roads would be better and the camp grounds would be open.

Hey that's a good idea to plan it around the same time as the SCCA meet at Nenana. You can't really get any closer, but its is still about 80 miles away or so. The drive from Anchorage to Fairbanks isn't that bad of a drive. I cranked from Winslow's house to Eielson AFB in about 5 hrs. It helps when the cops aren't around. As far as the roads go as of yesterday they were clear all the way except for the rain just past Denali. It would be awesome if we can plan to get something solid together. There are better places to park other than Sears though.

We'll have to plan the Fairbanks meet for July or August when it is warmer and the parks are open for all the tent campers like me. What am I thinking? I'll be staying at Joe's.

June's Meet will be in conjunction with the Alaska Raceway Import schedule.

For May, how does a meet at the point (Woronzof) or Flat Top? Then lunch at Gallos, China King, Boston's or some mongolian barbeque place? Gallos has a nice banquet area upstairs in their Old Seward location. This would be great for our loud group.

Is everyone afraid of driving up to Flat Top?

Kris and I are trying to workout a guest speaker/Subaru specialist. More to come...

It don't matter to me where we eat as long as we can fit everyone in. I like the point better. Not the far parking lot but the one closests to the Airport Post Office road. The background is Anchorage if we park right.

Do you mean the Earthquake Park parking lot? That would work to, we would just have to scare all the other cars away so that we could line up.

Kris

WRXnFX
05-05-2002, 03:02 PM
No, Earthquake park is before the one Eric is talking about. That one would be good, too. We can use one and keep the other as a back up in case the lot is full.

What no China King?

Keep driving down Northern Lights till you can see water, then you are on the point.:)

Past the big red signs that say "DO NOT ENTER!"
"Authorized vehicles only"

I think we want the first stop by the postoffice road.

WRXnFX
05-07-2002, 02:10 AM
Even though there is a red sign that says "Restricted Area," the point is open from 7am to 11pm. I figured since not many people know about it or think the area is off limits then we will have open reign on "The Point."

Just run the sign and the guard shack. If you stop and wait, then you'll be waiting till 11pm until the guard shows up. You'll see the park about a mile up the road on the right after you go through the sign.

Mike, I think we heard about this white WRX from the dealers. Did he get every mod on the car available from Subaru?

If you want to meet at Sears first then I can meet people there around 1230 ut we will leave to go to the point right at 1.

Can you also get ahold of Justing Uri?

So where is this meet going to be now. I keep reading that people want to move to saturday and go on the kruz.

WRXnFX
05-14-2002, 02:18 AM
Would the drags and a meet on Sunday be too much for everyone? I figure we could all go on the cruise individually and debrief the next day at the Subaru meet. I think we'll have more people turn out for the Subaru meet then we do for the Cruz. It gives people options.

Yes...it will be one car at a time.

Make sure you wear long sleeve shirts and pants.

I already know my WRX is capable of so much more than both of the Vw's, and that's enough for me. You don't see me pissin' on my Subie brethren do ya? Which is so common on the Vortex forums.

just up to 60 huh? are u sure about that? last time i checked didn't lee's vr6 run a 14.8 and i ran a 14.2...hmmm....stock for stock...i'm stock at least...i don't know what lee's car has...

Ok, we haven't tried it yet but this is what I meant to 60:

Say I'm on the highway, chuggin' along at 60, next to Lee's VR6. Drop both cars into 2nd or 3rd and bam, I guarantee I'm not going to run away from that VR6, possibly even walk. And I'm willing to bet it'll pull on me from 80-100mph.

Having owned both, it seems to take forever for my WRX to get to 100mph, and it's running out of breath. The VR6 will shoot up to 120 with no problem.

test it out...run against his and see what happens...maybe the rex feels slower cuz it's smoother...i don't know...i've never driven a vr6...so don't know how smooth the acceleration is to 100+...do it and let me know...:o

ok ok ok, looks like i got brought into a debate here:rolleyes:  :D .

Kevin (Code-7) and I are going to get a video camera and see if we can see if the VR6 will pull at 60mph. My VR6 is not stock, but my mods still don't put it in the HP or tourqe of a stock WRX. I do know that when i'm in kevins WRX is seems to take longer to get to 100mph. The VR6 at 80-120 is pretty fast. Its a german car made for the autobaun. So its geared to drive at the higher speeds, where the WRX is not. So we will try this and post it so everyone can see how slow my car is :D

The one thing that is nice about the WRX (and I love) is that AWD. Off the line that thing is a beast. I have a whole lot of tourqe going to FWD. I'm surprised the few track driven WRX's haven't gotten better times on the 60'. I guess its because their still learning how the WRX launches.

This will be interesting to see and test. We'll keep you posted:devil:
