I am needing to replace my egt gauge probe and have done some homework and learned that it is a type-k thermocouple. The TRE unit is about $50, but on ebay it looks like I can score one for less than $10.

Anybody know if this would work?

I have used Zeitronix EGT probes. Just cut/solder the connector off your old Greddy probe and you're good to go.

For 89 bucks, it looks an awful lot like othe thermocouples I have seen for $10-20. I appreciate the feedback, I am just having a hard time justifying a $50-100 "egt probe" that seems to be identical to a basic, cheap, type-k thermocouple. I found one for $8 shipped, and I'll give some feedback on it. I guarentee it will work better than the dead greddy unit in my mani now!

There is a lot of cheap made in china bull**** that looks identical to the originals, but that's all they do, "look similear" , they are in no way manufactured to the same stringent specs as the more expensive name brand probes, I will promise you that.

Just because something 'looks' like something else, in no way dictates that it IS infact going to perform on par with the other said product.

Like another user posted, what happens if it breaks off, you're out a turbo....

$50 now, $500+ later....your call chief ;)

I do agree that there's a lot of cheap knock-off stuff out there, but who's to say that the Greddy, TRE, or Zeitronix ones don't come from the same source? I don't know, and unless you work for one of these companies, I suspect you don't know either.

I have heard stories of "name brand" probes of this sort breaking off and shattering impeller blades too.

I guess I will just have to find out. Thanks for your advice though, bobcat.;)

You are correct sir, I have no definitive proof, just trying to help you out with the decision making proccess :).

Either way, post back up in the product review section once you get it all installed so the rest of the community can benefit for your endeavors.

I do appreciate your advice, and I certainly had been thinking the same thing. After researching these thermocouple doo-dads, the ones sold by the gauge companies seem extremely overpriced. I understand that they are trying to make a buck too.

I ordered that one above, for $6.97 shipped to my door. If it works, great. If not, oh well. One less jaeger bomb this weekend. :D

I will certainly update this thread after I recieve and install this little gem.

Doubt to will work I had the same gauge before going defi. That part from ebay likely wont work or work well.

< works on medical thermometers

I backed away from the Ebay one, but the other looks feasible. Supposedly, from what I have found, any non-grounded type-k thermocouple should work as a replacement for the Greddy gauge.

I will probably be sticking my foot in my mouth an a week or two if this thing doesn't work.
