View Full Version : HIDs not always turning on
I recently put plug and play HIDs in my 04 WRX and for some reason only one headlight turns on with the DRL . BUT when I turn on the headlights and off again both lights will be on.
Even stranger, sometimes when the Ebrake is up and I turn on the headlights they dont come on
Is this just the relay not giving enough power?
Any help will be appreciated.
Jonnywrx 06-21-2009, 05:11 PM Could be your ballast going bad. What make? most usually have atleast a 1 yr warrenty
RTX, they do have a one year warrenty. Its just weird that they BOTH wont turn on sometimes and then others its fine. Could it be the wet weather (Had a couple days of rain now)
Right now its both of them not turning on when I flick the headlight switch , but if I turn off the car and flick the switch theyll come on. When they dont come on they do flicker like their going to ... and then dont.
Also one of the NEVER comes on with the DRL

CRAZYHAWK 06-22-2009, 11:31 AM You might try disconnecting the DRLs.

Arg, should have put a " I dont give a **** about what you think" in my first post.
I would love to see my car burn to the ground from a plug and play kit.

Can't do that either , we need DRLs here.

Ahh, I see you have the good ol' American way attitude. Don't give a crap about other people's safety on the road, just so long as you can see better, right?
People's cars HAVE burned because of faulty kits. Be very careful what you wish for.
CRAZYHAWK 06-22-2009, 02:34 PM These kits draw 20 watts less per side and there are fuses and circuit breakers.

Not american , eh ;)
Jump on the "OMGYOUHAVEHIDSYOURGONNAKILLSOMEONE" bandwagon much? In reality their not bad, they cut off at an appropriate level and their 6000k
And as crazyhawk said , there are checks and balances to make sure your car doesnt catch on fire. The biggest one being a fuse. I could see if I did a hack job and used some electrical tape to connect a few loose wires, but no their plug and play man... give it a rest

Ahh...well then the American way must have migrated into Canada, ay?
And I'm not on any bandwagon, just trying to give you some advice. The 04-05 WRX halogen reflectors are actually pretty bad at focusing the light of an HID kit, so your cutoff actually isn't as great as you may think. You would actually get better results and more usable light from upgraded halogen bulbs. Or look into an HID projector retrofit if you really want some awesome lighting.
KGImports 06-22-2009, 04:14 PM DRL will cause the ballast to go out. DRL runs on a lower voltage causing the ballast to flicker and not able to power on fully. It will burn out the ballast. Best if you disconnect the DRL.
CRAZYHAWK 06-22-2009, 04:45 PM DRLs are required in Canada. Maybee he a can run his high beams as
DRLs.
His low beams are H1 projectors.

Spore 06-22-2009, 09:38 PM Maybee he a can throw his HID kit away
datdudedennis 06-22-2009, 10:17 PM i'd recommend a relay kit. aftermarket hids can cause the wire harness to burn out because they initially draw more power when you first turn them on. I was having problems with one hid coming on only but flicking them off and back on would get them both up. i never knew what was causing it, but pull some of the connections out and put them back in. every time i get the problem i just messed with the wires a bit and they seem to be okay.
wannabisubi 06-22-2009, 10:25 PM get used to it. Smaller cars don't throw enough electricity to fire the balasts (need a surge to power up) its as easy as a simple flick on flick off.
Horkus 06-23-2009, 05:16 AM Try a MAde in JApan HID kit,
C.RIMMY 06-25-2009, 01:57 PM i had the same issue, turned out crappy connection and it burned up the ballast (car was wrecked and bodyshop did a crap job repairing...)
Horkus 06-25-2009, 09:08 PM Don't use cheap HID's or risk burning your car up.
