I picked up an EJ20 recently and unless you can somehow find a WRX ecu and have that tuned, from what I've been told you should go stand alone. Of course that route is far from cheap but I am going with a Wolf Technologies ECU which runs around 1900 w/ the adapter and you can re-use stock sensors so you don't have to go out and buy new ones. I am no expert though, so don't quote me on this. :)

If you get the stock JDM ECU with the engine, you can use that.

I ran the stock JDM ECU with my car for 35K miles, with no problem. i have since went to a ViPEC standalone ECU. the ViPEC is a Plug in ECU, cost about $1600, and worth every penny.
