Saturday, August 29th had the TiC Race Team at E-town Raceway in New Jersey for the final event of the Redline Time Attack eastern division for 2009. The goal was to put in a good weekend with lots of practice since the team had never been here before, but everyone was greeted by rain. Copious amounts of rain.
After one very wet practice session in the morning the weather worsened until later in the afternoon, and in an effort to push some water off the track the RTA officials asked all the teams with tow vehicles to take them on the track for some laps.
“Well, it turned into a full on race,” said Clint Boggess. “You get a bunch of race drivers, tell them to put on their helmets, and hit the track, and that’s what’s going to happen. It was awesome!”
In the very first, and most likely only for some time, RTA Truck Class the TiC Toyota 4Runner started in the last position, and by the end of the session had moved up to a very solid lead over the rest of the field.
“It felt good, and we know the crowd loved it. They should really look at doing this at all of them,” said Tony Wiesenhahn. “We know some of the other teams with larger vehicles weren’t pleased with the results, but maybe they can bring something more competitive in the future.”
After continued rain throughout the afternoon much of the practice was called off for the rest of the day, and the teams headed out to their lodging for the night.
Sunday started as a much better day with the sun out, and the standing water cleared off the track. The first practice session went off without a hitch, and the huge number of cars entered into the street class helped to dry out the track completely.
In the first session, and in his first hot lap of the day, Tony W. was able to pull off a 1:12.98 which actually would prove to be good enough to win the street class for the weekend. Tony Barber fills us in on how they approached this race.
“We knew a little about the track from our research, and we anticipated that our car was pretty well sorted for it. It’s not very long so top end power wouldn’t be king here, but more of mid-range for coming out of the corners. As for getting into and through the corners, well, we did pretty well there. Our suspension setup handled the bumps quite nicely, and kept the tires on the ground more than a lot of the other cars we saw out there. As for the brakes, they worked great. We were still seeing some fade toward the end of each session when we were at CMP, but we made a very small change to the inlets of the brake duct that seems to have cleared up that problem.”
Another problem did arise for the team, and like the previous events it was the transmission.
“We knew the synchros on fourth were going at CMP, but we were hoping to make it through this event ok so we’d have two months to get the parts in and build the tranny. We just aren’t that lucky. Fourth synchro is completely dead, and second died on the track. ” said Tony W.
The failure of the second gear synchro actually lead to an off track excursion, but the team had a very good and quick solution for the problem. Clint fills us in.
“Well, we figured that it was shot anyway so why not just pitch it into gear and hope it sticks. So we called up Chris at WC Lathe Werks, and begged him to bring us one of his really heavy knobs so we could get more weight behind the throw. An hour later he was there at the track with one of his super heavy solid steel knobs. We popped that baby on, and could pitch it into any gear we wanted after that.”
The afternoon session saw a drop in speed, but this was due to a cone in the middle of the line on the back straight that was left over from the previous run group. After some discussion with the RTA officials it was decided to rerun the group with a clean track.
This allowed Tony W. to put down an even faster time than in the morning further solidifying the TiC Race Team’s victory with a 1:12:6.
With TiC’s victories at Autobahn Country Club, Nashville Superspeedway, Carolina Motorsports Park, and now Englishtown Raceway they have swept the first place spot on the podium for Street AWD, and Street Overall in every RTA event they have entered. These victories have also secured them first place in points standing for these two classes making them the 2009 Redline Time Attack Eastern Division Champions in both Street AWD, and Street Overall.
The next stop for the team is Fontana, CA for the 2009 Redline Time Attack East vs. West shootout.
“We have some work to do on the car before we head out there. First off is the transmission. We’ll be calling up Subaru Parts Pro this week for an all new gearset. There are some other things we’ve been looking at for the car, and some testing with some new tire sizes. I know Tony B. has been thinking about the power, and I know Clint has been researching the aero, but we have to make sure it has a solid base before we start adding things to it. Either way, California is going to be interesting, and we hope to put on a good show,” said Tony W.
