When the primary ignition table is modified(small increase), is it normal that the coolant temperature will slightly increase by 2-5 degrees during boost and at wot?
Is this why tuners use colder step spark plugs when tuning the primary ignition, to keep the temperature down?

thanks.

what are your coolant temps at? there are a lot of variables that affect your coolant temperature.

With the base map, I logged the coolant temp, and it would be around 189-192.
Then with the increase, the highest it went was 207 degrees with the small increase in the ignition and fuel table. I noticed right away, it accelerated alittle quicker and smoother. No knocks.
The temp only increases when im on the throttle accelerating. But goes back down to around 189-190 when my foot is off.

i am no expert, but when i log my coolant temps they do not increase during wot. they often go down, i am assuming because of the cool air passing through the radiator. it was 65 degrees outside during that log, and my temp stayed between 187 and 194. this is with my tweaked ignition map.

where did you increase your ignition map, what load and rpm?

what did you change on your fuel map? and i assume you are using a wideband, correct?

doh! it was 85-90 degrees when I did my log. thats probably why. And yes, Im logging with a wide band.

I dont have the program with me. Its on my laptop. thus dont remember the calc load. But, the increase I made was at 2800-4000 rpm.
I used the small increase function, and increase by one step on both the fuel and ignition table to be consistant.
I also made a small one step increase in the torque requested table at around 2800-4000rpm, and my butt dyno is feeling something.

No knocks or side affects so far. But Im going back to base map soon, and try something else.

Anyway, what have you tuned so far? Any gains?
Have you figured out how to increase the boost to 1 more psi?
Thats what I want to learn next. Anyone?

how many separate maps have you tested and logged?

Your thermostat should open up at WOT to allow the cooler coolant from the radiator into the block. Therefore your coolant temp should drop. 1* advance equals ~25*C rise in EGT's.

To check your thermostat, start the car and allow to idle until coolant temp reaches 200* or so (view with AP). Once at temp make a couple revs past 5krpm and you should see the temp drop. If it doesn't, replace it. Being as cheap as it is, it's always a good idea to install a new one.

Tuners use colder plugs to deter detonation as the plugs dissipate heat from the cylinder much more quickly than the oe heat range plugs. The downfall to colder plugs is they tend to foul up as they don't remain hot enough under normal driving to burn off combustion bi-products.
