View Full Version : Aerodynamic data for the GC Impreza?

Hey everyone. I'm looking for some real aerodynamic info or test data for the GC Impreza. Right now, my sedan has the V6 front lip and the the rear spats will be on soon. Has there been any testing to determine if these pieces do anything at all to reduce drag and lift or increase downforce? Are they just strictly for styling? I'm also wondering about the sedan's rear spoiler. Does it function in anyway regarding drag, lift or downforce? I like the look of the coupe spoiler and I would switch if I learned it is in anyway more effective aerodynamically. How about the large 22B style and V5/6 wings?

I know Luke posted some Prodrive data for the new Impreza, but is there any data for the older car?

Thanks for anything you might know!!

Greg

I am curious about this too... I was thinking about putting the V 6 front lip and rear spats alog with the V6 Spoiler.

I don't think those things make much of a difference. If you want your car to be more aerodynamic, I'd say slam it to the floor and take off the hoodscoop. And chop-top it if you have a ton of $$$. ;)

I remember reading somewhere that "the Impreza has the drag coefficient of a brick". Take it for what its worth...the Impreza all though a very beautiful machine, it sure doesn't have the lines of a Porsche 911.

Which of all the subaru's has the lowest CE drag?? It is in fact better than previous years of the NSX.

Anyone?

I think it was the SVX? Do I win a prize? ;)

The XT/XT6 shell aka the Alcyone, at .29 :).

Sorry North But I think the Xt/Xt-6 was actually called the Vortex. The SVX was Alcyone. :)

I believe the MY98-01 RS has a drag coefficient of around .38. I'm pulling this number out of my head, so I may be off. In any case, like others have said, the RS has a drag coefficient of a brick! :D

At least it's a good looking, mean looking brick!

The SVX also has a drag coefficient of .29, so you were correct.

Yes and no :). It's a hotly debated topic as to which one is actually the Alycone. The XT/XT6 body certainly carried the name before the SVX, though it was also known as the Alcyone. For visual reference, I give you-

XT/XT6 Alcyone

And an SVX/Alcyone

Go figure

Hmmmm I wonder if the SVX we got stateside was just an evolved XT-6 ala New age WRX. Same name different body. Would make sense considering both have 6 cylinder motors. Damn you now I have to find out grrrrrrrr:mad: As if I dont think too much already:lol:

I recall reading a pretty good article from an Aussie website about the GC aerodynamics.

I think was linked from here somewhere...

"The Cd for the base Impreza L coupe is 0.32; the 2.5RS's is 0.35."

For reference, the 2002 Porsche 911 GT2 is rated at 0.34!

First quote is based on this 1997 Car and Driver article: http://www.caranddriver.com/xp/Caranddriver/roadtests/1997/September/199709_roadtest_subaru_impreza25rs.xml

Porsche Cd is based on April 2001 issue of Automobile magazine.

In stock form, the RS's hood scoop is closed too making it somewhat of a reverse parachute. Imagine holding a rubberized bag the size of the scoop by the handles outside of the car through the window at highway speeds... now that's drag! :p

the Aussie article.. is really cool.

They take a Gc8 chassis and attach a bunch of string to it everywhere, then drive it at 70MPH. Finally, they analyze it. I'll try to find it.

That would be cool to see! Let us know when you find it.
