View Full Version : What do you think about these future mods?
WRXPTY 05-29-2002, 02:31 PM I'm planning on doing this mods to my '02 WRX Subbie. This is what I have in mind. I'd would like to know your opinions.
1-Perrin up-pipe
2-M2 or Turboxs downpipe
3-Blitz catback exhaust
4-FCD (fuel cut deffender)
5-Boost Monkey
6-upgrade the gas pump
7-550cc inyectors
8-Boost and exhaust temperature gauges
I'm trying to avoid getting an Unichip since later on I will upgrade the turbo and a front intercooler.
what do you think? I'm wondering what kind of HP will I get?
thanks for your replys
the only advise i can give you is to make sure you don't do injectors or the fuel cut before the ECU upgrade. injectors need remapping and the fuel cut will save your motor if you overboost with the monkey. i have the boost monkey and i like it, btw. good luck with your build-up...
subix 05-29-2002, 04:30 PM The turboxs down pipe will not bolt up to any catbacks, but will bolt up to any axle back systems that fit the stock exhaust.
Collin 05-29-2002, 04:41 PM sounds like you have plans for a solid car. Although, I have heard some mixed reviews about the exhaust?
MANELIS 05-29-2002, 07:55 PM 1. up-pipe wait for txs cast up-pipe coming in
2.go for turboxs turbo back
3.Blitz is nice but I wouldn't get it, the main idea with the rex is to look stock to the cops, do the turboxs to the axle and bolt on a muffler of your choice that looks stockish
4.Don't even think about it, the stock turbo is no good at boost past 17psi It wont make any more power only heat, and the feul cut will save your a$$.
5.nice or any other ebc/turboxs manual
6. NO you dont want it or need it until you change the turbo
7. NO " "
8. Guages smart thing
Good luck,
Dino.
WRXPTY 05-31-2002, 07:56 AM What do you guys think about the Turboxs stage 2, plus the up-pipe and the gauges?
It might be my safest bet..????????
MANELIS 05-31-2002, 02:55 PM That would be a smart choice since its upgradable later to a stage 3 or 4 or 5 for that matter.
There are two things that i wish i hadn't done to my car, first I wouldnt touch the handling side, except for the tires.
Second I wish I had done the guages before anything else.
If you drive like an animal, I'd do some minor changes to the brakes: put in SS brake lines and change the rotors/pads.
You don't need upgraded calipers for spirited driving, unless its really spirited down a canyon.
I see in your first post you don't want a unichip, while I agree its not the best option, It allows you to make crazy power on very little money, If you went with a standalone later you could always sell the chip for a small loss, I personally like the unichip and i like the fact that subaru tuned the under 3500rpm everyday drivability.
Take it easy,
Dino.
YoungWilliams 05-31-2002, 07:14 PM Manelis,
If you don't mind me asking, what handling mods did you do? And why do you regret them?
Curious, cuz I was looking at the SPT/STi setup, and want as many inputs as possible...
Cheers,
Grant
MANELIS 05-31-2002, 09:16 PM Hello Grant,
First I installed the Eibach pro-kit $250
Then I did the whiteline sway bars back and front $300
then I did the links for the sway bars. $200
Then I did front and back strut bars $300
Then I did the ALK $250
Thats $1300, look the car handles nicely but everytime I go over a bump there is a clunk sound due to shorter springs aggrevated by the sway bars.
So to solve my clunk sound I have to fit coilovers, now I'm getting a set of KW's for next to nothing but i still have to install them so that joke will cost me another grand.
For $2300 less $250 for the springs I'll have a car that will eat up a racetrack, problem is its a daily driver and will see a track once in a blue moon, so I've wasted $2050 on a car that handled so well straight out of the box that porsche boxsters had a hard time keeping up on twisty roads.
Gotta love those marketing guys!
Supposedly the rear sway bar is important and i'll convince myself that i didn't waste my money but at the end of the day ask yourself do you really need all that crap or do you like to tell yourself that if you ever push the car so hard that it understeers on the way to the mall you need to upgrade everything.
On top of all that my car will ride as hard as hell with all that crap on it, but hey I can take a bend at 120mph yay!
The only thing you need in reality is :
1.rear sway bar with no links
2.upgraded tires
PERIOD
Later,
Dino.
Martin Ritchie 06-01-2002, 08:23 AM MANELIS makes some good points. It is a good idea to upgrade the car's stability (tires, brakes, suspension) before you start bumping up the horsepower IMO.
aussiejim 06-02-2002, 06:54 AM The rex will take 17psi....but id get a FMIC to keep things cool, you wont need big injecters unless you are after some serious HP, the first thing should be an ecu to take advantage of the exhaust etc (and you wont need andFCD or bleedvalve).
If you do go the bleedvalve & FCD way then 16psi is fine, i had this setup for 6months before i got the unichip & EBC.
My rex now has 172hp at the wheels ( no injector upgrades needed), and my car has these mods:
Full 3inch turbo back exhaust
Custom cold air intake
Kingdragon high flow filter (flat panel)
Unichip and EBC set to 15psi
Cheers
jim
MANELIS 06-02-2002, 10:14 AM Don't forget the Auzzie/USA correction factor.
1 Aus bhp= 1.15 US bhp
You know everything up here is bigger;)
Dino.
aussiejim 06-03-2002, 03:24 AM Have to be bigger/better dont ya's!!! lol
