I just ordered 2 BAD@$$ rally video's from DUKE, and they came in PAL format instead of the North american VHS version. Anyone have a converter? Maybe know of a place where I could get a cheap PAL VHS player? Any suggestions? ....Not so many questions you say? "Ok" http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/biggrin.gif

2 small problems here:

1. PAL video's will only play in a PAL VCR (as you know)

2. A PAL VCR will not display properly on an NTSC television http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/frown.gif

There may be some converter you can get, but it might end up being kind of expensive. I don't want to bum you out, I just wanted you to know. BTW, If you can live with black and white, it will sort of work, but it's not good for the TV.

Check your Yellow Pages for Video Production Services companies. They frequently offer format conversion services (like 16mm film to tape, tape to MPEG, etc.) and many of them can convert PAL to NTSC. Buying your own converter won't be cost effective unless you intend to buy a LOT of tapes from Duke. Once you get NTSC copies of your PAL tapes, send the originals to me. http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/smile.gif I've got a multi-standard VCR and TV setup that I used while living in Germany and your tapes will play just fine on it.

There are VCRs out there that will play both formats. I believe that JVC and Mitsubishi both make them. They cost in the $500 range and would not be cost worthy. I was looking because my wife is Portuguese and has tapes from home that we cant see over here. Like the previous post recomends get the tape transfered to NTSC format from a video editiing place, it might cost you some jing but at a one-off it will be cheaper than a new VCR.

Alot of video editing places will have trouble because most of them can only do Betacam PAL - NTSC stuff.

But call around and don't be shocked when they tell you how much it will cost.
