View Full Version : Should We Go Turbo?
Primm Motorsports 05-07-2001, 01:28 AM Not sure if this will be OK here!
But we just wanted to get some oppinions as to if the members here think we should go turbo on our project car? ...MY2000...

Frey Bone 05-07-2001, 01:51 AM are you doing any internal mods to the engine? are you going to run the stock 2.5 motor?
Lurker 05-07-2001, 05:38 AM A crazy, all-out NA Impreza would be very cool, and some competition in the NA arena would benefit us all.
On the other hand, if you would be willing to develop a supercharger... A lot of people here would give a big cheer.
And if you want silly power, I guess a turbo could do that. It depends on what your goals are for the project car. Is the car suposed to showcase your stuff? Or just be a fun way of romping around on the track?
Paul Sakai 05-07-2001, 09:48 AM I vote for supercharger!
Primm Motorsports 05-07-2001, 12:40 PM We are considering small turbo at about 7psi = approx 250+ hp & torque on a 2000 2.5RS. This is a gravel spec car so max HP is not our goal, instant power, torqueand & reliability is. Form what we have seen here the stock motor seems to be able to handle the addition of a small turbo without any major internal upgrades.
I also think an SC would be interesting, but we neither have the expertise nor the financing to develope one.

Captain Ding 05-07-2001, 02:57 PM I'd love to see how far an NA EJ25 could go. If reliability and throttle response are two of your key elements, NA would be hard to beat. Since I do mostly backroads driving, those two things are very important to me, so I decided to stay NA and would like to know what its true capabilities are. Has AndresRS01 seen the limits of reliable NA power, or can the bar be raised higher (compression, electrical)?
p-car 05-07-2001, 07:44 PM I like the small turbo idea - accelleration with reliability.
Get it CARB certified and I'll be interested in buying one.
Safir 05-07-2001, 08:19 PM IMHO Turbos have been done to death... you talk about upgrading an impreza past intake/exhaust and people automatically say turbo. I think it woudl be much more interesting to build the ***** out of the car N/A, as well as be more of a "project"
not that I have anything against turbos, just N/A is more intruiging, as I have not decided wether I just want to go turbo an dbe done with it or stay N/A and build the ***** out of the car as said.
Buck-O 05-07-2001, 08:53 PM Hmmm...supercharger...nah. I dont see that working to well on a rally car. The last car to use a SC in world competition was the Lancia 037, and the first stage of boost on the S4. And unless you go with a vortech, rather then roots bassed supercharger, kiss intercooling goodbye. I dont think SC's would be really practicle on a rally car. No real efficient way to regulate boost, like a wastegate on a turbo.
N/A build up...nope, not to practicle either. N/A build ups are either low torque monsters, or high reving torqueless , HP beasts. And the nice medium inbetween those two, is called stock. N/A build ups are very touchy, and the powerband is so narrow, that it would require alot of aditional tweaking with the car, on more then just the engine.
I agree, go with a turbo. Maybe its overdone. Maybe we've all seen it 50,000 times. But we wouldent see it at all if it didnt work. A turbo will offer the best overall control of boost, alog with the broadest powerband, with the least amount of overall car tweaking.
My only recemendation...if i see a BOV on the final product...i will never stop laughing at you.
Go turbo, and hold on.

Tkacik 05-07-2001, 10:45 PM I hear ya Safir.........NA all the way...hey that rhymed!
MichiganRS 05-07-2001, 10:51 PM OK let see here
Indivdual (Slide) Throttle Bodies
Huge Cam
14:1 Compression
110 octane of course
Xtrac Seq. Tranny
What am I forgetting?
0r 7:1 comp 30lb boost yeah!
B. Foyle 05-08-2001, 08:44 AM Personally, I'd like to see someone do a turbo setup with a "tweaked" exhaust system that would provide lots of torque, not just horsepower and/or noise. Too many turbo systems out there have great claims of horsepower, but it's torque that matters most in rallying. And that's what I would love to see.
As for N/A buildup or SC, I agree with Buck-O there - not practical for rallying.
