View Full Version : Any word on if PPIHC cancelled due to fires?
I'm down here in Texas and have heard they are closing forest access due to fire risk. Anybody heard anything from PPIHC, I'd really be bummed to drive all that way and not have a race to see.
Could somebody local get in touch with PPIHC organizers, I've tried emailing them, but get no replies.
Thanks
Weedy 06-12-2002, 07:46 PM I highly doubt that they will close the event, although it's very possible that they will ban camping the night before.
So do you think the Forest service will let spectators up the mountain? I don't know how the FS operates, since we don't have any in Texas, I'd heard they were closing all access to National Forests in parts of northern New Mexico.
I guess we still have a couple weeks, so I shouldn't panic yet. :)
Weedy 06-12-2002, 08:22 PM Well I was just talking to my friend in Co Springs, and he informed me that the Pikes National Forest has been closed. Now as for whether or not this will effect the race, we don't know yet. The race is not for another couple of weeks, so I think that it is too early to really start to panic. Although I will be going there anyway since I am having some work done on my car that weekend there. I really hope that the race can still be held!

To all;
I recieved word last night from the Pikes Peak organizers that they have
received the go-ahead from the appropriate authorities to proceed with the
Hillclimb on the 29th of June.
The only significant change in operations as this time will be a ban on all
overnight camping on the peak, which should ensure that we all get to
experience the "worlds highest traffic jam" both going up the mountain on
Saturday morning, as well as coming back down that afternoon....

Weedy 06-12-2002, 11:28 PM At least we will still get to see the race!
cnstman 06-13-2002, 12:28 AM when we are on the mountain for the race please everyone be very very careful. we are going to be basically sitting on a 14,000 foot match. i kid you not, it is sooooooo dry here right now. we currently have a fire burning that is only 5%, if that much, contained. it has taken 51 homes already, is at least 70,000 acres large, and is headed for a much more heavily populated area. this fire is 20 miles long by 14 miles wide!!!! they have estimated that they have already spent $20 million to fight this fire, and like i said it is only 5% contained. so you do the math on the total cost of this one
oh by the way, it was started by an illegal camp fire!!! we have had fire bans for at least a month, but still some one thought they were more important that everyone else, and had a camp fire.
so for everyone coming to the hill climb, lets have a very fun, safe time!

stentorian 06-13-2002, 04:20 AM So I take it that we can't camp out any night while we will be there??
That sucks, because now we gotta find a hotel or motel that is pretty damn cheap, we don't have too much money to sped, BUT will be there for the races :D !!! Or does anyone wanna open their home or apartment up to us for a few nights?? hehehe....Otehrwise we may be able to stay at one of my friends houses, but that is about an hour away from the mtn....Need to know about the camping situation so we can scramble to find a place to stay, because we were just going to camp out every night :D Thanks

So the gates open at 4AM, I think I'll just sleep in the car near the gate. That's the plan for now, I guess, unless it rains. That would be nice, rain. Shall we dance? :)
I wish I was more familiar with the area.
Saturday evening, I'll be leaving next Wednesday if all goes well. Just wondering what the latest on the fire is. Has there been any word one way or another?
Thanks

$35 covers everything, except camping and I don't think they're allowing it this year anyway.

wrxlvr 06-24-2002, 02:29 PM Don't buy your tickets off the site! They have like a $12.50 service charge. King Soopers has a $2.50 service charge.
ImprezaRS dot com 06-24-2002, 02:40 PM Yeah, I bought tickets for JJ, GTBGUY and me at King Soopers for $35 + $2.50 service charge each. I thought the $2.50 service charge was a one time deal no matter how many ticket's I bought and they charged that for each one
cnstman 06-24-2002, 03:02 PM 12.50 service charge, that is terrible. i bought mine at king soopers, and i thought 2.50 was bad.
:monkey: that
