I'm thinking about getting a stromung muffler for 02 WRX but I've heard one or two audio clips of exhausts and I hear a lot of backfiring/popping. Do they all do this? I cant stand that noise.

Quite normal and happens because of the unequeal length between the right and the left side of the header.

hell ya , backfiring is great , my apexi N1 backfires and sparks like crazy . occasionally I get a nice flame out too . I also have it on film when it shot a 1 foot flame out the back when letting go of the gas , but then I run 550's and running quite rich http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/smile.gif I'm still trying to capture the film on a video capture card and post it.

I get some good backfires...Gives me the real rally car sound...I've only ever had a backfire that worried me once, and I think it was because I had the window down and it reverbarated off some buildings/cars nearby so it sounded louder...

no offense, but previous to this, I have never heard of backfiring to be a good thing, and whenever I heard one, I would look to see some beater ass pinto or something. Rumble I LIKE, rumble...pop.pop., I'm not so sure. I guess it's an aquired taste. Maybe I'll learn to like it, I've only hear audio clips anyway.

This isn't real backfire like that, but technically it is backfire, methinks...Actually, I thought the Stromung was one of the most poppy/burbly out there...

My car with its Stromung dual tip does not backfire! It "burbles" and "pops" occasionally -- usually around 3k RPM. As many people have stated before, this burble/popping is due to the fact that the header lengths are unequal and the escaping exhaust gases are causing the burbbling/popping sounds. I have never gotten any loud BANG type backfire from my Subaru! The free-er flowing Stromung doesn't muffle these pops as much as the stock muffler, and that's why they're audible.

so what is a good "pop free" (as much as it can be anyway) exhaust w/ nice rumble at idle, good notes under hard acceleration and realitivly calm while cruising on freeway. Basically nothing overkill, no harley decible levels...

Sounds like you're looking for an STi (V5/6) exhaust. You can get them from SPD Tuning (http://www.spdusa.com ) or if you watch the UK scooby board(http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk ) you might be able to find a used one.

Burble burble! I love that sound! The backfiring/popping that comes out of the Subaru boxer engine and Stromung, is not loud and obnoxious.

if you don't like backfiring, get a BMW M3.

I see it a hassle, for a non-race car to have a backfire. There is no need, especially if it's NA. It means your piping is too big and the exhaust has back pressure from the cool fumes not moving fast enough.

I don't recall every hearing an obnoxious back fire from my Stromung. Just super low rumbles and growls down shifting... SOUNDS GOOD... try it you'll like it.

Yeah, I have been trying to get some nice burble/backfire action going with my stromung but I guess it just wants to behave too well.

All I get is a growl.

Heh, I'm dying to get that burble, pop, crack.. Just need to get inebriated some night and make a foolish purchase online. Not that it's a waste of money, but I need some money to live with. Burble, grunt.

i set off car alarms all the time because it is such a low deep burbling tone. i went into a parking garage two weeks ago and set off like 5 car alarms, woops.

I can make it happen on downshifting quite
easily, but sometimes when I least expect it
I get a loud POP out of the exhaust.

Doesn't bother me in the slightest.
Borla is big on exhaust velocity; part of the reason 2" piping is used. I would speculate the biggest reason for the popping is the unequal length of the manifold/header piping.
