View Full Version : How much off road abuse can a scooby take?

Today was my last day of school, and it ended with a ton of fun. 2 kids I know both have chevy blazers and I rode with one of them down to these off road trails south of us, and we did some off roading, and it was fun as hell. I wondered if I could take my RS back there but some really big bumps and dips are on the trails. I thought I could save my money and get some crappy 4wd truck or I could invest in some nice suspension that is ride height adjustable and some skid plates. How much would this run me? We were going 5 - 40 mph mostly on the trails.

More than you think. ;)

Just be careful and lookout for rocks. A skidplate from get-primitive.com may be your best friend. :D

Skid plate and a rear diff protector are needed, and get some good tires, you don't want to pop a balloon on a dirt road miles from anywhere. I've had mine on some dirt-and-rock logging roads (no skid plates and stock tires:eek: ), and it did great. I've got a diff protector now, but still need a skidplate, and I'm going to need new rubber before I take it there again, but it's fun! Just be careful, and don't wrap it around a tree, that would take all the fun out of it.

On this stretch of road, after I took the pic, I went up and came burning down it at about 60 MPH, then had to slow for a quick hairpin. Fun stuff!!:D :D

Tires....yeah...very important. :) And skid plates too.

Those pictures are a few weeks old, but I did that on Kumhos!! Since I don't really autox (the closest is 200 miles away) I'll probably get something stronger and a little more all season. Soft Kumho 712s make for some squirrly offroad adventures. They do help the car kick the tail out pretty quick though. Those RE92s are pretty good offroad.

Zoinks, yo! What was it a rock, a log, a stump? Pretty gnarly, man!

I would say it depends on how many rattles you can live with. My car has survived quite a few miles of off road TSD rally without mechanical difficulty (including big water bars and the 15mph stuff into the snow bank) but it rattles like an SOB.

If you keep it on the relatively smooth and flat, quite a bit of abuse can be taken. But one stump (or big rock, etc) ... and its all over.

I'll tell you, I accidentally jumped a curb in my car. The only damage aside from the scraping on the exhaust heat sheild was a bent rim. I had to swap the front wheel to the back so that I didn't get any speed wobble until I could get a new wheel, but all is good now :)!

Some Subarus have more ground clearance than a Hummer and can make a mockery of conventional 4X4s.

A bit more aggressive than stock tires help:

Lift a Subaru 8 inches? Thats unpossible!

Just getting there worries me. The access road is blocked off by a gate and several large concrete blocks, so we drive around the side of the gate to get in. I am worried that my front end will scrape and bend because of the steepness.

the front end won't bend. a wheel will come off the ground. drive it off a cliff, then the front end will bend.

i've beat on my car TONS, and i mean beat. all of my friends have completely swore off conventional 4x's just because i can do the same stuff they can with my RS. i've neglected to get a skid plate, a diff protector, and new rubbers. but hey, i'm still tickin'. worst thing I've EVER had happen while going 75 down a road with 5" ruts left and right and in the middle and all over with big stones and rocks kicking up everywhere is gotten a pebble caught in my brakes, that made the worst screaming screech i've ever hear metals make. but that was the worst.

i'm going to go find you the link to Paisan's site where we all found the most awesome place while i still lived out in NJ. you wouldn't believe the stuff we did with those cars. we even managed to drown an Isuzu Trooper while they tagged along. all of the subarus kept on tickin...granted, we weren't trying our cars through 3ft 'puddles' either...but the foot deep ones were fun!

i'll be back with that link in a few!

mine took plenty, until the stock bushings/struts succumbed to the abuse...then i replaced the suspension...

now that i've got the H&R's on there, i don't really do too many rally excursions anymore...i DO want to keep all my teeth, you know. ;)
