Why does everyone pick on people for their 1/4 mile times? I see so many people post down right ignorant stuff. Just because you ran what ever time at your track does NOT mean someone else can do it at another track. 60Ft clocks vary from track to track and so does MPH. I drag race for a living. I have been bracket racing since 1990. I have driven everything from 17 second trucks to 7 sec rear engine dragsters. I travel and race from Atco, NJ to Moroso Motorsports Park in West Palm Beach, FL. I have been to more than a couple good and bad tracks over the years. My home track's 60 ft is 4 to 5 better than anywhere else on the east coast. Does it hook better there, is there some strange force that causes all cars to get better traction there? NO, the track owner set the clocks at 56 ft to get a better reading and to brag that he has the best. I have raced at tracks that the mph varies 8mph lane to lane. If I go to Atco I may run a 7.58@180mph when the air is just right. But at my home track in the dead of summer I will only go a 7.87@172. Did I screw up somewhere, did I not launch correctly or shift wrong? NO there are to many variables in drag racing. Roll out, photocell height, track distance, elevation, wind direction and speed, track temperature, tire temp, barometric pressure, humidy, actual temperature and dew point all play a part. Is the track level, does it go uphill or downhill. Did someone lose a motor in that lane the night before, was it synthetic oil which is extremely hard to clean up. Is that why I spun at the 1000ft clock and slowed from the week before .Why do you think professional drag racers spend so much time working on their stuff tuning it.
Just because you went a 14.30 in your bone stock WRX somewhere and someone else goes a 14.30 in their modded one does not mean yours is faster, you got to look at the variables. Don't rag on someone because they can only muster a 2.0 60 ft when you claim to have gotten a 1.8 the one and only time at the only track you have ever been too. How about some constructive criticism instead of breaking everyones balls all the time. Think about what you are saying before you post it. Not every tracks timing systems are dead accurate, they are just numbers to go off of. As long as there is not much difference from lane to lane who cares what the overall ET is, unless you are trying to set a world record.

hhhuuummm... NO!

Anybody who can't do close to 14.3-14.4 stock in decent conditions just don't know how to drive, it's almost NEVER the car, it's the experience.

I know for a fact that I would of been crazy ass pissed with myself if I would be in the high 14's or even worst in the 15's.

But I just love smack talk and **** :P

BTW, I'm guessing that you went to the track and you couldn't even come close to making the times you were supposed to and now you're trying to be a hero or sumtin'?

Listen, people can fend for themselves.

I'm with stealthbomber on this one.

Unless you were running at the same strip the same day and know from first person experience what conditions were like _that_ day, constructive comments only.

It never ceases to amaze me the number of people who have to inflate their own importance by beating on someone else.

If someone is looking for hints and tips, and posts their times in good faith, don't be a jerk and give them a ration of crap about slow times.

They already know that, that's why they asked for feed back.

Also unless your willing to pay someones repair bills don't rag on them for launcing easy to protect their investment.

Drag racing is supposed to be fun -- it is a sport. Bench racing should not be a blood sport.

You never know, someday you may actually need some help from someone someday when you discover you don't know near as much as you think you do.

^ Agreed, good post Tom..;) I didn't take your comments as ranting at all, but rather a clarification of the variables involed with different track conditions. It's nice to hear from a pro.

STEALTHBMBR and hotrod,

Amen!

GoodFinder :)

yes my first time ever at the 1/4 mile drag strip a few weeks ago was embarrassingly slow, but I had a lot of fun, and I'm looking forward to getting back out there to learn more, get better, enjoy the company and experience and just have a good time

if i were to run a 14.3 in my stock wrx i would be completely stoked. I live at over 4000 ft and high 14's would be lucky

subyrex, give people a break. Atleast in the EJ25 there is HUGE varience in outputs. I've driven a 00 RS sedan that couldn't get out of its own way. it was POSSIBLY as fast as the avg EJ25 5spd Legacy outback.

I've also driven a SOHC Forester S that was hands down faster than any stock 99-00 Civic Si I've driven. No possible way that it was making less than 175-180 at the crank.

Both were bone stock, brand new, and 6-7 miles only.

Same with SHO's. I've driven a whole hell of alot of them, and one will blow your mind with how much power it has, and a different one that is identical on paper can't beat a Civic DX in a stoplight drag.

I really did enjoy owning and driving the SHO when it first came out. That Yamaha engine is a beautiful thing to behold! What a sight to see in person a "shogun" doing One Lap of America. Now that was a picture of "all motor" as most of the car was consumed by the engine placement! OK, back on topic, I think we'll also continue to see a variety of people posting, hopefully "good manners" will prevail more often than not.

Tom, excellent explanation. Serious strip racers should already understand this info, and newbies should be aware of it.

Bravo Tom. I can tell you are an experienced drag racer. I agree with you 100%. To me Drag racing is a hobby and a chance to learn and help others. I would never laugh or make fun at someone for running slower than the car's expected time. Thats ****ty thing to do. One of these days people will learn that practice is the key.

You dont have to tell me about how tracks vary. I grew up racing at Carlsbad raceway in California. My mom raced her el camino at that track in 1965. Its about the same shape now as it was back then. One lane can be as much as 10mph off from run to run. ITs been like that for years. I always got 1 tenth faster in the far at the half track.

Now being in Arizona I have two nice tracks to choose from and if I want I can race wed, thurs, fri and sat each week if I go to both tracks. Firebird is the big NHRA track. Its a bit slower in the 60 ft area then Speedworld.

Different tracks show different times. End of story. Oh and dont bring up the use of correction factors. Most of the people here are not bracket racers and they just dont understand why the NHRA would spend all that time and money rating tracks.
