View Full Version : It's back in business - my Hybrid Turbo!!

Some of you may recall my turbo experimentation with the stock TD04L housing and Garrett /Mitsu internals? Well, I finally got it to the track last night and on a mere 14.5 psi (no kidding) my first two runs resulted in 12.9's.

Here's a run down of mods: turboback, up-pipe, unichip, and of course the turbo hybrid WITHOUT fuel mods, i.e. injectors or pump.

What's the big deal you ask? Had I been running more boost, let's say 17 psi, it would've been more like a 12.5 or 12.6 and I think that would be impressive on a stock fuel system.

My runs however were flawed. The first run I banged into the rev limiter on the 2 to 3 shift and had fobbled to get it into gear. On the second run, I dropped the clutch at like 5500rpm on the launch and spun through to redline.

Run #1

60' 1.808
1/8 8.284
MPH 83.67
1/4 12.965
MPH 104.35

Run #2

60' 1.848
1/8 8.314
MPH 84.10
1/4 12.990
MPH 104.62

The reason I didn't run anymore boost was because I had a boost and vac problem limiting me to the above said 14.5 psi. I took the boost controller out and took it apart (MBC -ball and spring) but that didn't help. I'm still not sure what's happening. Maybe the wastegate??

Anyhoo... check out the original thread here http://forums.i-club.com/forums/showthread.php?threadid=179089 for pics of the turbo.

Next time out I promise a 12.6 with an additional 3 psi of boost. My next step after that will be for injectors, pump and more boost and see how far this turbo can go.

nice. that sounds very promising

good luck with the next runs

How fast does boost come on vs. the stock turbo or even the FP upgraded turbo ?

What kind of cost are we looking at?

You still in Charlotte, Todd? Thought you were heading to PR.

GREAT times! I know you'll be happy once you upgrade your fuel and crank up the boost a bit.

You'll have to head to the next autocross around Charlotte, assuming you're still around.

Comment on how the car feels (real laggy, somewhat laggy, BIG punch @ xxxx RPMs, etc.).

Have fun!

bobgrice: Unfortunately not in P.R. just yet. More likely it'll be next year at this time so that's indefinate for now.

Regarding the manifold psi, I'm comfortable taking it to 17 psi on the stock injectos and pump. I think it'll be okay for just a .25 mile run here and there.

DannyGT: Boost and response are mostly linear like the stock turbo. The FP upgrade, for instance, is laggy becasue of severe turbine clipping. It doesn't have a very good compressor to turbine relationship for streetability, IMO.

I think it's hitting 14 psi by 3800rpm. Not to bad really.

B-Kerr: This can be done for $800 or less. Yeah I know that you can pick up an IHI VF unit for a little more but this retains the stock apperance and may be potentially more powerful than even the PE1820.

wow...you're getting the same MPH as i am in the 1/8 mile....you should be careful with those stock injectors as im sure they are completely maxed out. The injectors duty cycle is at 97% at ~250whp

I wouldn't call the stock turbo linear at all. The boost and tq comes on suddenly (down low). I know the VF turbos are the same way (when it comes on I'm like -> <- then -> :D  <-)

good luck on your project.

Yeah I guess linear is probably incorrect :D I guess I was being idealistic when I made that statement.

jmott, krave, TypeC or anyone else for that matter who have larger upgraded turbos - what times have you run and at what boost levels. I'm especially interested to see some numbers on 14-15 psi runs for comparison.

Based on my traps, how much power should I be making? How much HP should each additional pound of boost yield generally speaking?

Thanks,

Todd

Do you have any specs on the turbo's internals?

Who did the work?

Locally made by the owner of a turbo shop who has been working on turbos since he was 16 years old and later became an engineer for Caterpillar heavy equipment manufacterer and has opererated his own turbo shop now for many years.

The only thing I know about it is that it's for sure got a 15G Mitsu turbine wheel (and I think cartridge but could be wrong) clipped 1/12th and some type of Garrett compressor wheel.

Other additions I know for certain are bored out turbine inlet side from up-pipe and matched, all kinds of machining to make it work and a speacial thrust bearing, which would be the most pain in the butt thing for somebody else to replicate this turbo. Too bad I didn't have another thrust bearing made so more could be produced. A local NASCAR race shop made the bearing and that's all I know about it.
