This forum gets so little action. I admit, I don;t check it as often as I should. But, at least we own a limited edition car that will NEVER be made again :)

we're getting phased out. but hey, the fact that our cars are discontinued makes them that much cooler, since now the young ricers can't hop on the bandwagon.

we were phased out from day 1...subarus (well, up until recently) were always a WEIRD car. back when i bought mine, the response was, "a subaru? they still sell cars in this country?" if you bought a subaru to be "in phase", you bought the wrong car.

i love my car...even today, the uninitiated still don't know what it is, and friends of mine who aren't even into cars love mine to death. the GC8 is a special car, and so is the WRX...but not in the same way. the GC8 is special in the way it makes you feel...there's some kind of big secret that only you and a few select others know.

there's a purity of form and function there that hasn't been diluted by a generation's worth of market research and government regulation.

look at all the cars, especially models that have been introduced in the last 15 years or so from japanese maufacturers...the first generation cars are (usually) always the coolest...GC8 imprezas, old skool MR2s, 1st gen miatas...

Plenty of traffic over there, and no WRX'ers to muck it up:p I love my RS, and plan on keeping it for as long as possible. Now if I can just get some money scraped together and get that turbo in the car....

hehe...the new cars just aren't the same...i've decided to skip the whole upgrade to a WRX thing, and just drive this dorky thing until the day i can afford my M3.

The WRX is faster going, turning and stopping, but the RS is COOLER  !

hey, I just bought a WRX. but I first wanted a RS in 99, but couldn't afford it, so i had to wait till now. I do think the old rs look better than the current WRX, but i wanted a new car all for myself. But I don't think I would've gotten one if it weren't for the i-club community and some other kind people I met online. Don't shun the new ricers that are comming in, instead try to teach them to be smarter more educated car users.

There is a feeling you get driving the First Generation GC model. It just transports you into a whole other world, causing a sensory overload. I drive my car every day, and still get excited before I run out the door with the keys. I will keep my car as long as possible and continue modifying it, and when it wears out, well, a rebuild is in order. It is a fantstic vehicle, which has styling to last through the ages and a way of plowing through paved and unpaved turns that can never be duplicated. But never say we are a dying breed, we may not post as much as the WRX guys, but that just means we are out with our cars.

Cheers.

Well said Chris.

I admit that I have turbo envy. But I would never trade my naturally aspirated GC car for a turbo model of the 2nd generation Impreza. For some reason, the new Impreza feels bloated and sloppy to me. I've driven them and they don't give me the same warm fuzzy that I get from my 2.5RS.

If its not fun, its no good. So, I have to say that I'll keep my 2.5RS until it dies or I decide to get something other than a Subaru. Or perhaps until an EJ20T (and non-factory gearbox) makes its way into the engine bay. Then I'll call it a WRX. A real WRX.

Chieh's Web - http://Chieh.CameraHacker.com/ it's honestly not even the weight issue, i mean with 300lbs of crap in my car it's STILL alot more fun to drive then the WRX...the WRX isn't as "tossable" as the RS is, it's too prone to understeer because they made the new front end so damn stiff and left the rear loose. Well anyhow, they have good power, but i like torque...that's why my turbo envy is going to turn into torque monster envy

I test drove the new Tiburon the other day because I think it looks good and I just wanted to see what other cars were like. I guess the drive was ok, I didn't like the seats/driver's position at all, and things felt strange being so used to the RS. When I got back into the Impreza after the drive, everything just felt *right*. I got a big grin on my face, and for the first time I realized what sets our car apart from others.

The main thing is that they just feel so meaty, so raw. You really feel in tune with every aspect, and the aesthetic parts of the car only amplify that feeling. It really makes me proud to drive it, I love it so much.

Anyone else feel like they stare at their car way too much? Anywhere I go, I always want to sit there and look at it. :D

exactly...i got to ride in a ~300whp WRX a few weeks ago, and while it was crazy fast, the feeling is completely different. i'd take an RS with just bolt ons and nice suspension any day of the week. the WRX is fast, but disconnected feeling in a way, kind of like riding in a bullet train...you feel being shoved back into the seat when it takes off, but then it's just kind of eerily smooth. almost BMW-ish. i guess that's a good thing, but i like the raw go-kart feel of my car.

You guys are hilarious. The Pre-RS guys are all at the USMB (Ultimate Subaru Message Board) doing what Scoobies do best........offroading.

I love my OBS wagon to death. I'm learning to love my XT6 also. If I was to crash into a new WRX head on, my black 'door stop' on wheels' (with it's aerodynamically chiseled front end) would probably cut a WRX in half.

Well, it all started for me in about 97 when i saw my first RS rallying its ass off and i said i gotta get me one of those things. I waited and waited for a GC8 WRX untill i saw the "U.S" WRX and got my 2001 in December of 2000 after they stopped making them. I wasn't to impressed with the WRX and its looks. It finally had the power. I figured that subaru didn't turbo it for me, I guess I'll have to do it my damn self!! The GC8 rules my life. That car is my life and the best part is nobody can get one new anymore. I will restore my car over and over if that what it takes.

I know right. the GDA's come out and all of a sudden we can't get past 5th or 6th in WRC. And to the fool who said earlier in this post that the WRX is quicker, turns better, and brakes better...HAHAHHAHAHAHA in your face! Have you ever driven an RS. I guess weight and wheel base length has nothing to do with performance once you have turbo right?? C'mon. I've driven a number of rex's with and without performance mods...and they are nothing like my RS. My car feels like one with the road...perfect seating...steering...I love my RS! People stare and gawk...and are like "nice car man". Just last night, I took my little bro out to see fireworks...and this place had a few thousand people on the lake...and as I'm driving by with all these Uncle Ben's sponsered POS's behind me, people are pointing at my car and saying "man now that's car!" , "hey mom...can I have one of those when I graduate" and so on. I had the schweetest smile on my face.

Now don't get me wrong, I love the rex...the seating is great...it's an ergonomic car...and it gets the job done. But the Original WRX in stock form (jap 95+) would run circles around your watered down US version. Our Cars + EJ20T's equals the opitamy of performance in my eyes. How about this...think about the 22B and all it's glory...and tell me if there will ever be another subaru like it.

Steve
I bet not many GDA owners can say that.:D

It really is weird how awesome a car with the roots of a economy car can look and perform. Sometimes when I see a pic of a GM6 next to a GDA, I get the impression that maybe it is getting a little dated. But then I see one in person and remember how much I love the styling, the looks may never get old.

I know...I know :)

I get compliments all the time...only when it's clean. It just looks mean, little...and people respect it. My old mustang drivin pals even admit that they love my car. Even thou they all run 10's and 11's...they have lots of respect for our little cars. About a week ago a guy in a Cobra, with obviously lots of work done...rolls down his window and is like "hey man I like you car" and I was like "I like yours too" And man...that made my day. it's things like that change my mind everytime I'm jealous of a WRX's power. I know all i need is a turbo and some wheels and my sports car needs would totally be satiated.

Yeah our bodystyle is kinda outdated when you see it next to like a toyota matrix, the new Tiberon...things like that. But none of those cars feel the way ours does. I have driven soooooooo many cars...and still..it's hard to find something that feels like ours. I'll be honest...the rex seats are bulstered a little more but just feels like an improvement over ours. if you think about it....how many cars have all the stock amenities we have...LIKE THE PIMP ASS SUNROOF!! (actually there are many but you pay extra)

<salute>

The GC8 IS a classic - a legend, really. It IS the car that earned our good reputation. When Prodrive was running the Legacy in competition, and the Impreza platform came along - they took off. It helped Colin to his Championship - also the three constructor's championships. The Impreza turbo breathed life in to the concept of Subaru performance. Like a spark that is quickly engulfed in the fire that it produces and forgotten, the GC8 started something greater than itself - and that's just here in North America. It is a very good car, (dumbed down), and was given to people who (as with the SVX) largely lacked the class to know what to make of it. Sucks to be us....well, them.

As for comparison, read my "Umpteenth test drive" in the general forum - I cannot reconcile the WRX hype with the WRX experience. I wish more people had a chance to drive a well-tuned RS...not mine though.

I agree with cvalle-sd (long time no see, Chris!). Take any WRX owner that hasn't driven an RS, and I'd bet they'd prefer the old-school RS interior and feel it has. The RS feels smaller and more true to the road.

I drove a stock WRX, and didn't care for the interior much. The cabin feels rounded. NO LEATHER!? The car felt quick, but not fast.

....ahh screw it...I just want the motor for my RS.

I think they would prefer it as well. Well depending on who the owner is. Some people like the rounded out feeling vs our plain view of the road and perfect knowledge of the dimensions of our front end. I think if subaru were smart, they would try to help out GC8 owners get a hold of EJ20T's easier. I mean Ford, Honda, and probably a few other manufacturers do it all day long...why can't subaru.

oh well, I won't bitch...I'll work on my ej25-T and be happy

it's funny how I see in all the oversea's tuning mags, all they talk about is Subaru. But here it's all Honda:mad: . It's actually better that way I guess, because then modified scoobies would just be considered rice like honda's and it just wouldn't be the same. This is my first Impreza, I don't think I'd get any other kind of car (except maybe 330xi:D )

yeah it's hysterical how Hondas are regarded as "grandma cars" and people piss on them all day long yet here they are revered as da shiz! My ass man...I tell honda owners at least once a week to go blow it out their ass. I have yet to be "own3d" by some civic, or accord. All these trash talking retards have not the slightest clue what a performance car is comprised of yet because 20 Million people are convinced that these are great..the industry has to follow their commands and supply every aftermarket part they can to a car that in their country of origin is just a POS. It's almost how religion, although the cause of virtually every major war since Jesus' death, is suposedly the pathway to nirvana. Nevermind all the people who were killed in the name of God and never got their message across. I guess it's the same with Foster's...Australian for Goat Piss...man Australians don't drink that crap yet people here think it's great. I've been around cars since I was little...my brother's dad was a pro drag racer...my aunts ex fiance raced Datsun 510's in SCCA...we've had a collection of bad ass hotrods and road cars and not once has a honda ever set foot in my garage. Or any other POS for that matter. Now a stock 01 GT 5-speed running 13.71 (best run after 4) and the slips to show me the proof...plus the baddest stereo you can toss in a car stock...that's impressive. Not some torqueless hunk of sheetmetal that sounds like a pissed off brigs & stratton barreling down the road. I have no respect!

I think these honda-lemmings who read only Honda Tuning and feel they too can have a 9 sec honda for under $4k are as gullable as the girls who starve themselves because Cosmo said thin is in. I think we are surrounded by stupid people who can't investigate things for themselves, seek the truth...they believe whatever is fed to them because they think it comes from a trustworthy source...bull! People need to read between the lines...realize that the industry only eggin' them on so they continue to buy clear tail lights, huge wings, and loud exhaust...it's billions to them...so why not. All I'm sayin is I never go with the hype because it's usually wrong.

oh WOW! it's a completely different car with the sparcos in! :D

all the little weird wiggles and such i felt coming up through the structure that i thought were suspension parts being worn were just the stock seats jiggling around. they're way more comfy (along with the driving position), and you don't budge. usually around 0.65g is where you'd have to start physically fighting against the cornering force, and now that you don't move, you can throw the car through corners that hard with one hand.

you sit WAY lower than the stock seats...which when i first got in the car, i thought was going to be a bad thing (since i'm short), but it didn't take much time to acclimate to at all. the visibility is actually better, since you don't have the a-pillar (esp. on the driver's side) or roofline cutting into your field of vision. it's a lot like the driving position in a del sol...low to the ground, and all you see is road before you at the end of the dash. the shifter now falls to hand PERFECTLY...like it was meant to be this way. :D

forewarnings: they are a PAIN to get into the car...the brackets (from rallispec) fit VERY exactly (which probably accounts for the reduced seat movement), and required quite a bit of finger-tightening of bolts and then wrestling around to get all 4 holes to line up. it took me about 2 hours of messing around to get the driver's seat in. once again i was extremely thankful i have 4 doors, as i couldn't imagine trying to do this in a coupe. make sure you have a pair of 4 point harnesses, since there's no place to hook up the stock seatbelts. and you'll constantly have to slide the seat back and raise the steering column up to get in and out of the car...there's just no way around it, but i'm already used to it. but don't let the minor headaches scare you away, it's WELL worth the time and money.

plus no one DARES to mess with you on the street. :D

I just saw this forum for the first time. Quit your crying. BTW RS's are NOT Old School!

One reason why this forum is not used it is a joke. Real old school "pre impreza / legacey" people rarely even come to this forum.

And the New age Fat boy looks like shlit no matter what you do with it. Put a battle bumper on it and you might as well get another make car all together.

hey if you wanted it die why didn't you leave it alone. we love our "old skool" babies! and yest the new age does look like a cracked out neon, but it came stock with a turbo and ours didn't. minimal mods and the car is in the 13's and still performs well. There are many on the boards who traded in their beloved RS's for the rex...and they are happy campers.

either way, the RS-T (MY98-01) is the best way to go hands down :) hopefully a miracle will occur allowing me to get started on my RS-T project, which will completely eliminate any thought of ever trading in for a new age...or anything else for that matter!

man After riding in my bud Graham's RS-T running 4lbs, and my bud Hoon's RS-T running 6lbs, I've realized what true nirvana is and I know exactly what i need to get there...$4K more or less. I feel more comfortable in my rs than in anything else, even after test-driving so many cars, so I'm gonna try and stick to the RS-T project.

I couldn't agree more! there's just something about the coupes, whether it's an L or an RS that just all out kills the WRX. They're so tight and solid, besides which, isn't a 4-door sedan usually referred to as a family car, not a sports car (sub-compact sport in our case :D ). Lots of people have been asking if the WRX is going to become a collectible of sorts in the future, I think coupes have a better chance at that. They are just all out more appealing through and through.

Does anyone have the stats on that? I'll be honest, I've seen more rex's than rs's in Central Florida.

Coupes and Sedans are both hot. I like how the Sedans look with a body kit, they look like a mini touring sedan.

Subaru really pushed marketing for the wrx though... I never saw a commercial for the 2.5... before the wrx even was released to the public here I saw ads quite a few times a week on multiple major channels... rs would have been a lot more popular imo if they initially offered a turbo package as an option. People seemed to jump all over that fact of the WRX... :( /bitchslaps SOA :D

I plan on keeping my RS for as long as possible. Even when I get a another car. I don't think Subaru will be making another coupe the likes of an RS. I know they are working on the b11s coupe, but that isn;t the same. It will be an automatic with I believe a twin turbo H6 (dont quote me)

So the older the GM6's get the more rare they become. It's not everyday you will see a two door Impreza. At least where I live.
Also Long live the GC8's :)

I have every expectation to keep my rs for years to come. Why I see it reasonable to do things like wait for an excellent front and rear ver 6 seat set, just so the car keeps the same look throughout. When you are keeping something for a while it makes a little more sense to spend more money to get the complete package. Not many WRX guys feel that way.

We're dying out by necessity. Whenever something newer comes along, the old will always slowly fade away. Whether people sell them, wreck them, or simply stop contributing because they don't like the new ones, the older guys will not be heard from as much.

Keep this as consolation, however: remember that overseas, there's still a hell of a lot of GC WRX and STi cars running around, and they're still loved just as much as the new ones. Maybe even more, in some circles. :D

I love my car til death do we part, too. I don't plan on ever selling it. My wife and I WILL need another car, as her '91 Cavalier is on its last legs. (It probably was a few years ago, but oh well...) We just may end up with like a '95 Impreza wagon, or used Legacy wagon, or.... something that says "Subaru" and can haul stuff in the back. What we buy depends on how much we can afford.

When I start having more money, and the time comes where I truly want a new car, I hope that I can keep my RS. Maybe I'll turn it into a racing car. Maybe just do a lot of projects with it. Hell, maybe I'll get a bug up my butt to convert it totally back to stock. Who knows?

For now, I slowly mod the car as carefully as I can, with what money I have. My current top-lister is a white RS coupe spoiler to replace the stubby, short one we sedan guys got. Which is nice, but I like how the four-door cars look with transplated coupe wings. (I have a thread in Private Wanted, but if anyone's got a cheap Aspen White coupe spoiler they want to unload, drop me an Email. ;) )

New seats I also need. I got leather in my car when I bought it (light grey), so what seats I buy, I'll put a leather combo on top of. I'm currently looking at GC WRX seats and seeing if the Leatherseats.com can do a template. With any luck I can own them by Spring or Summer of next year. After that comes a Ver.6 front lip spoiler, a Ver.6 grille, and some rear bumper spats so I can install the STi Aero Mud Guards that I already own.

I haven't decided what kind of engine work I want to do. So far all I need is a new clutch; mine's in rough shape. Exedy Stage 1, here I come. :) I've got STi Ver.5 springs and struts, and will be purchasing Group N tophats soon. I'll also be upgrading my brakes to WRX/Legacy front/rear rotors ASAP, maybe with new fluid.

Eventually I'd like to do an STi Type RA transmission, or maybe the six-speed, and some kind of great engine job. I've got 96k miles on mine right now, and climbing. I just don't know if I want to Frankenstein my engine, or transplant a new one..... No clue.
Hell I'd be perfectly content with a Forester XT powerplant. That amount of power would be perfect for me.

Now, then... Aside from my love for my car, I must run to the defense of Honda. It's been said in here, and many other places, that Hondas are "dumb" or "slow," or for the "lemmings" or what have you. Comments like that whiz right by me. Honda may seem less creative or unique than something like Subaru, but that's because, engine-wise, only Porschephiles can appreciate what we've got. The inline four is the most popular style these days, but if you ask me, there's nothing wrong with that.

Honda has built themselves a tremendous reputation. For a guy who started out building motorcycle engines, and ended up with a company that produces everything from highly-vaunted two-wheeled speedsters, to massively popular automobiles, to your average lawnmower, that's quite an accomplishment. Honda is one of the best engine builders on the planet. To disagree is just plain ignorant. You may not like the STYLE of engine, but that doesn't change the fact that few manufacturers--mass or specialty--in the world can TOUCH Honda's inovation, reliability and technological wizardry. Look at Vtec, as one example. They started a revolution with that little invention.

I've owned two Hondas (an '88 Civic and a '94 Integra), and while I sold my latter for the RS, I still will support Honda any way I can. Sure, I get tired of seeing Civics that are badly modified, but the Civic is the modern-day version of the same cheap transportation that our parents used to create fantastic musclecars. That's the whole idea: take a base car, and build it into something wholly unexpected. The fact that the Civic is the benchmark for such projects is something to aspire to, not scorn.

I've been in love with the S2000 since the 1995 SSM roadster hit the show car circuits. I was a Moderator, one of the first, on www.s2ki.com for a long time. (My attendance dropped a lot after I started working again, and focusing all my time on NASIOC, so they removed my privileges. Fine with me though.)
I love that car and if I had $30k to spare, I'd buy one of those WAY before considering an STi. Regardless of how different it is, I already OWN a Subaru... and if it were to be a car for fun, versus practicality, it'd be an S2000 for me.

I'd buy an RSX Type-R any day of the week, if Acura ever decides to release the car Stateside. The ITR was one of the most amazing cars on wheels, and the RSX is only better. (Excepting the suspension, in some people's opinions, but the Type-R may remedy that.) Yes it's FWD, and I dislike any FWD car I drive after stepping out of my RS, but for anyone who ever drove an ITR, it doesn't drive like an understeer-favoring car. Not in the least.
It was a technological marvel, idolized by the entire sport compact market for good reason.

Anyway... I've said what I wanted to. Now back to your regularly-scheduled Subaru talk. :D
