View Full Version : Arghh! Curbed my wheel bad!
topcover 06-25-2002, 12:24 AM sonovabeech!!!!!! Pulling out of the gas station this evening and a tanker truck was dropping off gas. One of the hoses was blocking my aisle but it looked like I'd fit.
So I tentatively pulled forward and the truck driver saw what I was doing and decided to helpful and guide me by the big hoses. He was guiding me in and most of my attention was on avoiding the hoses and not on the high curb on the passenger side. Curbed about 1/4 of the lip on my front right wheel! ****!
Anyone use Ken's Wheel Service in SF? If they're gonna repaint the entire rim, where do I go about finding another "PRODRIVE" decal for my wheel? ARGHHH! Damnit I can kick myself in the head. Anyone else got any advice for an idiot! :(
It looks nasty as hell!
joltdudeuc 06-25-2002, 12:32 AM DOH!

blue-ej20 06-25-2002, 12:33 AM sorry to hear about that stan. i know how you feel but i dont care about my stock rims as much. i'll check around to see if i could find a prodrive sticker. i'll get back to you.
ldivinag 06-25-2002, 12:46 AM at least you didnt loose a piece as big as an eraser head, when i curbed mine...http://www.sbe.csuhayward.edu/~ldivinag/wrx/Dscn0494a.jpg
OwlBoogie 06-25-2002, 12:50 AM  OUCH! Sorry to see that Stan. I have curb paranoia already, seeing this doesn't help. I'll be on the lookout for a prodrive decal for ya. Maybe Tire Rack has some.

blue-ej20 06-25-2002, 01:23 AM i was going to call tire rack! dang, great minds think alike. too bad im smarter than marc. oh well, thats life.
byl-23 06-25-2002, 01:31 AM Ouch!
Stan that sux!
It would have to happen now. Couldn't wait for a while or happen several months earlier.
For the decal, see if you can contact Prodrive for it.

Or maybe you can email Simon:

ScoobyBoy 06-25-2002, 02:46 AM my pops helped curb my rim. i thought mine was bad, but im sorry to see that.
hope you can get that fixed.
:D
topcover 06-25-2002, 03:09 AM Thanks everyone for your support.
I'm taking the car in to Ken's Wheel Service to get a quote. I'll be letting them know that I'm a member of the i-club and that others (if they should do a good job ;) ) would be interested in getting their wheels done at their shop if they would also agree to a discount.
I'll check with the folks at TireRack and Prodrive regarding the decals and report back the estimated quote. I'm assuming repairs will involve some filling, buffing, sanding and powdercoating.
Everytime I see that and the other dings I have on my rims, I just shake my head with disgust. I may have to resort to installing the "curb feelers" on the side of my car. :o
Concillian 06-25-2002, 11:29 AM There's twice that I thought my rims were toast, but my Pirelli Pzero Rosso saved me both times. Both times were pretty bad and I thought 'no way the tire saved that' ... but it did.
What tires are you guys using? and what size?
darmom 06-25-2002, 01:42 PM dude, just let it roll.... those are character marks. Just tell people you were doing something heroic when it happened....
psoper 06-25-2002, 03:09 PM That's not so bad, some lesser rims might have taken a shot like that a lot worse, all 4 of my P7's have little scuffs like that, so I'll be curious to hear if you can get them fixed up without it costing an arm and a leg.

topcover 06-25-2002, 03:36 PM Okay... I priced three different places and this is what I found:
Ken's Wheel Service (SF)
1) Machine and smooth out the lip, cover with touch-up paint, remount/rebalance tire (no guarantee of close color match). Same day service. [$75/wheel]
2) Machine, fill and smooth out ALL scuffs and gouges. Repaint (said nothing of color match) remount/reblance tire. Next Day Service [$175/wheel]
Wheel Tech (Campbell)
Machine, fill and smooth out ALL scuffs and gouges. Color match repaint entire wheel. Remount/reblance tire. 3-5 Day turnaround [$150/wheel]
Wheels America (Union City)
Machine, fill and smooth out ALL scuffs and gouges. Color match repaint and clearcoat entire wheel. Remount/reblance tire. 1-2 Day turnaround [$125/wheel]
I was thinking I may go with Wheels America in Union City. Anyone have any experience with them? I would appreciate and welcome any other input you folks may have!

98kPa 06-25-2002, 03:49 PM Those prices are crap.
Go find a Dremel-ish tool and some hobby store paint. I fixed my old pair of anthracite wheels like this a few times. The looked fine (until they were stolen).

stevedood 06-25-2002, 05:14 PM 1> Arrange for a sandblaster to strip off the powder coat, $20
2> Fill it with high-temp bondo & file/finish, $10
3> Have it re-coated. $60
Rough Cost: $90
White4drWRX 06-25-2002, 05:59 PM Damn...that sucks...
I would of be Hella MAD if i messed up my Wheel...
Mephiska 06-25-2002, 06:07 PM Ugh, 175 to fix a wheel, ya might as well just buy another one for that price =/
ginowrx 06-25-2002, 06:09 PM Stan
Now you have a rallyX wheel or a Reno/Tahoe run wheel not to mention an all around set up that you can take anywhere.
"Just get new ones down the road man"
We repair wheels all the time and the Prodrive is still in production and is not worth repairing coz you can get a new wheel anytime. The ones you have to repair are the hard to find wheels coz youcant find them..:)
Save $$$$$ IshhhStan leave it man save for new ones later, Thats my .02 cents

darmom 06-25-2002, 06:24 PM I agree. save your money. I had a wheel fixed at wheel techniques in Campbell. They did great work, but I only had it done because -
a. My wheel was no longer in production
b. It was bent badly enough that it wouldn't hold air.
Spending that much $$ for a small cosmetic flaw seems excessive.
OwlBoogie 06-25-2002, 06:30 PM Stan, Troncalli sells the silver P7 for $225. Just to let you know:

topcover 06-25-2002, 07:09 PM [banging head on table] Yeah... you guyz are right.... just pisses me off. All of the damage (scratch on my rear bumper, dent on my front driver quarter panel and now the curbed wheel) were my fault.
Now my car looks.... all... driven. :(
