Question about breaking my car in... I have done some searching for answers and found many different views. I have tried to keep the rpms down below 4000...every once in a while going over by a little. At 560 miles my dad decided to drive in and really gave it some rpm's...I was bothered by this. Should I be? What are the effects of an improper break in?
Thanks in advance...
Jerry
I wouldn't worry about it too much. Just keep it under 4k rpm for the first 1k. You can occasionally bring the rpms higher, just don't do it all the time until after break-in.

Your car is destroyed. Go buy a new one. ;)
Nah, doing it once isn't going to do much damage. Proper break-in is about the long-term view of your engine. Will it last? How reliable, etc... but revving it once during the first 1000-1500, isn't going to do any real harm. Unless it was for a long time and on a cold engine.

Yeah you'll be fine. Tell your old man to stay away from your baby though!
In reality, the first 500 are the most important. I've heard that the engine is pre-broken in with special oil and drained before it even get's attached to the car. I can't say for sure that that is true, but my dealer told me that. He said, "It's should be fairly broken in already, just be nice for 500-1000 miles." So the second 500 miles seems like a CYA for SOA. :)
It seems a lot of old timers still believe that you should drive the car hard while breaking it in becuase it will then "learn" how to run faster (on a car without an ECU). That is shear BS. Although once the car is broken in some people here reset thier ECU and drive pretty aggressive for 20 minutes or so and they say the car runs better.
Personally I think the 1000 mile breakin thing is a joke. Your car is fine. So when you test drove your car at the dealership you didn't drive it hard? If not then how do you know that it's the car you want??? Don't take this the wrong way, I'm not saying red it everytime. You know what's important at the 1k mark... change your oil.
That's my $.02. enjoy the car.

I actually test drove a blue sedan demo model. After I took a redline shift in first to see what this car was about, I looked on the odometer and noticed it had 250 miles. Oops: Mental note . . . never buy a dealer demo. :D
My car was pristine new when I got it.

My guess is the main effect of this will be that your dad will want to borrow your car:)
