View Full Version : How to remove the splash guard?

I'm taking the intake resonator (or whatever it's called) out from my fender. I'm not sure how to do it.

Firstly there are those little clips or screws and I don't know how to take those of without braking them.
It doesn't help at all that my splash guard is for some reason layered with tar like material, so I really can't see even what is screw and what is not. I'll take the tar off...

Secondly is it enough to take out the splash guard only or do I need to work with the fenders as well to access the resonator?

My Subie is an oldie 1993 Legacy.

Thank you and I apologise the lousy English.

Not really sure on the legacy - I had to loosen up the fender liner on my WRX too.

A lot of the clips are friction deals - there's like a little tube where the bottom part has 4 slits in it so it will collapse a bit. The little tube collapses a bit to push in to the holes in the parts, and the little screw just holds the tube open, so it doesn't collapse and come loose. It works more like a rivet than a screw, except it's the screw that enlarges the fastener rather than pounding with a hammer or pulling with a pop-rivet gun. Usually the whole assembly stays in the outer part, and you just loosen the screw and pull the outer part away from the inner part. Hard to describe, I hope that makes sense!

Do you have these instructions?:

Those are for the WRX, don't know how applicable they are to the Legacy. What you described sounds similar.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again. You don't need to apologize for your English! It's quite good, and definitely better than a lot of the Yanks on this board!

Thank you for your answer and your compliments.

Are the clips like those clips at the trunk? The web dictionary is down and therefore some of your explanations was too much for my summer holiday mind:) Those clips at the trunk don't have screws in them, so maybe not.

The scoobymod's instructions describes a rectangular piece of plastic under the fender. The described piece of plastic in my Subie is a part of the same piece which is the whole splash guard assembly. Still I need to get those clips off.

So ... are the clips easy to break :)

If I break one, can it be replaced with a bolt or a screw?

Actually they're not that easy to break - and yes, you can replace them with whatever - the problem is they go into blind spaces where you can't get to the other side. Try to just back the screw out part way and then pull on the piece around the fastener. It should come loose very easily.

I got the clips off without braking them, they were just as you explained.

Resonator has left the fender. ECU reseted and well...maybe some difference in mighty stallions. Actually I haven't tested it much yet, feels nice however. No added sound, which is fine by me.

Thanks C.
