View Full Version : STI UK Understated

I now know of two STI UK's that are absolutely stock producing more power than specified.

One was checked out at 275bhp a couple of weeks back, and over the weekend (on a different rolling road) another tested at 277bhp. I know two samples isn't exactly proof positive, but it does appear that we do have a bit more power than we thought, at least from some cars.

Oh, just in case anyone suspects the rolling roads, on one a P1 gave exactly what was expected and the other was equally as accurate across a number of cars.

At the wheels? Seems high to me. I mean, if modded US WRX's are producing less power and getting 12 sec 1/4 miles, something is wrong. The fastest UK STi 1/4 mile I've seen (mag) is mid-low 13's...it is heavier though, but not by enough to raise 1 sec on the 1/4.

They are, in another sense, understated though. W/ an advertised 267hp, there is obviously a bit of detuning going on here. Since they already come w/ all the needed go fast goodies, a simple MBC/EBC should put them into the 12's...add an AFC and lean the fuel and I'd bet they'll be deep into the 12's. Just my $.02 though...

Ken,

I know of another one which was tested at 263bhp. This was on a rolling road which has a reputation of being more accurate than others which can over-read a bit. Although you can't take any dyno reading as accurate, standard UK cars produce about 210 - 215bhp, instead of the 225 reported by other rolling roads.

Dori - these figures will be flywheel figures, calculated from the power/torque at the wheels on a 4WD dyno, and then estimating the drivetrain losses on the run-down to give power at the flywheel.

The cars are advertised as 265PS, or 262 bhp, so seem to be either producing exactly what was promised, or slightly more.

John, Knowing Well lane's dyno I'm inclined to believe that high 260's is more appropriate, but the one giving 275 was done on a dyno at a well known racing teams factory. It gave 6bhp less than a stock P1 done at the same time.

I am sure that they just throw in the bits when they modify the STI's in the UK before sending them to the dealers so there will be variations. I know how casual a job they did 'UK modding' the P1's as a few of them were shipped to dealers with the bottom linkages finger tight!

Fitting the STI/Defi 3 gauge set next week and then just sitting around (well, driving rather quickly) waiting for the PPP. It needs more torque around the 3000rpm mark in 6th to save changing down on freeways.

Dori, MBC's and the like are far too crude and I have no intention of dragging my STI. For kicks I prefer to race single seaters. Its more interesting when you have a dozen drivers on the circuit. :D

I wouldn't put a MBC in a STi...but people will when (if) it comes to America.

I didn't know these were flywheel estimates. Sorry.;)

280 whp with no mods? None? I realize it's a JDM motor, and that Japan "underrates" their hp numbers, but that seems high (especially at the wheels). I have no positive or negative opinions of you. Sometimes you piss people off, but I really think you're trying to give people "first hand knowledge" when you're able. I'm also running the S-AFC/AVC-R combo.

280 whp from a stock JDM STi lump, with only breathing mods?

STOP SMOKING WHATEVER YOU'RE SMOKING, it can't be good for U. ;)

Seriously...there is something REALLY weird with your dynos lads....I've read so many weird power quotes it isn't even funny anymore.

On the other hand...if I had my car over to the US for a dyno session, I could sort myself some decent power statement.

I bet I'd make at least 300 atw on your dynos.

:D

I can't believe that the JDM engine gave 280hp at the wheels, with just an exhaust fitted. That would translate to something like 360 - 400bhp at the flywheel. Up to 310 at the flywheel I could just about believe for a full de-cat system on good quality fuel, but any more just isn't true.

There are very few cars producing that sort of power (400bhp at the flywheel) here in the UK, and that's with extensive mods. I think there must be a different way of measuring power or we are speaking about different units of measure.

Anyone got any ideas ?

I think he a boost controller too...and measured w/ the blitz power thing...

Who cares about estimated (badly) flywheel figures?

What are y'all STi7 guys making at the wheels? That's all that matters.

Yeah, all had most of the bolt-ons and maybe a FMIC (I can't remember if that was before or after his first dyno). We have yet to see ANY dyno of his new motor, so it could all be BS.

...just wanted to add that those numbers are *not* atw...

I think I know the answer!!! U guys must have some super special tranny lubricant....because your losses seems to be close to zilch.

:D ;)
