:) yo, I'm thinking of purchasing this 98 impreza RS I found.. But before I do that I'm curious to hear anyones stories or testimonys concerning this car's durability.
Whats the most miles you've taken this car?
Just how bad has your maitenence gotten etc.
Over all rating??
Just curious,
Would definately appreciate input,
Take care scoobs,

I beat the living piss out of my car (which I know I shouldn't and have since the past week started cleaning it and taking care of it). I thought the gearbox may be f'ing up cuz sometimes it grinds, but I drove a '96 civic the other day....when in gear, the shifter moves about 2 inches in every direction, it'll just fall out of gear, 3rd, and 4th grind no matter if the clutch is in or not...so now I've got renewed faith in my transmission. BTW it's a 2001 with 53k on the odometer, a run in with a fence, about 12 oil changes, 3 auto -x's, 2 with practice days, 3 1/4 mile runs, and a trip to NC and back. Subaru makes a good car that from what I've heard will last a long time. Get it, you won't regret it

the only thing i've ever had to replace on my car from it actually *breaking* was a driveshaft that went bad because the previous owner replaced it with a non-OEM one. oh yeah, and it took it about 10,000 miles for it to break from the time it started feeling like there was something wrong with it. ;)

i run my car *hard*, and i've had no problems whatsoever, other than just normal wear items (suspension/brakes) wearing out right about now at 110,000 miles...replaced the brakes with subaru 4 pots, and the springs/struts with H&R's/KYB's. all that needs replacing now is the bushings, and as soon as i have time to install the group N's, i'm confident everything on this car will be in good working order for a long, long time. it's still on it's first clutch, and it still feels fine...

...knocks on wood, looks out the window and smiles at the subaru... :D

subaru is right up there with honda as far as reliability goes. the impreza is the reliability darling of consumer reports long term tests.

98 RS?

with a DOHC? or SOHC?
the phase I engine (DOHC) has a sketchy history...
bad heads/block seem to be the big problem in
the higher mileages of the Phase I engine...
i'd steer clear of it....

other than that, the car is very reliable.
take care of it and it will take care of you...
these things run forever... 110k's on my rally car :D

Jamie I thought all 98's were twin cam? Or am I wrong?

some have the phase I block...
you need to verify which the 98 has...
the Phase I was made from 96-99

i personally know of a 98 RS that just blew this last month...
to be honest not sure if it was a DOHC....
but the short block is toast :(

phase I engines are crap. utter crap.

Some of the 98's had problems (DOHC only Phase I), beyond that, Subarus are amazing for reliability, my family has owned 10 and have NEVER broken down.
My last one went to 276,000 miles before I donated it to American Lung Assoc. because it was rusty.

I'll vouch for the (99) impreza's bullet-resistance. I haven't had a single problem that wasn't the direct result of something I did wrong. Turn key - car starts. Clutch in, select (CRUNCH) first, and off you go. Least trouble / Most fun I've ever had.

Well I guess the deciding factor for my getting this car is the headers.
How rare was Dohc for 98 cause it just so happens I may have a later production vehicle of 98..which would mean I may not have phase 1..
...Ah well,
take care scooobys and I hope I can join the club...
RS at least in my mind, is a very prestigious
car so i definately think it was worth the search.
Glad I discovered Scoobys,

I've got a 98 with ~60K on it and no troubles, and I beat on that sucka, too.
All sorts of mods, but always a happy report card.

As with any car, you might get a stinker. Keep in mind Subies are notoriously bulletproof.

Good luck

I'm one of the older "old skool" peeps here...

95 k on my MY 98....got it with 35.

The cam seals and main seal went at 75k. I did the t belt and the water pump at the same time becasue I had it all apart. You'll notice a little oil leak that seems to be coming from the front cover...that's the tell tale.

Other than that I change the oil, I put gas in, and I drive it.

EDIT: finally read all the other posts....

all the 98's were DOHC....what's your VIN??? The difference between the phase 1 and 2 engines were that the 1's had skirtless pistons. they would wear crooked in the cylinders....

I believe VIN's below 2000 were all phase 1's... I have one of the last survivors....#0750...original engine...
