View Full Version : NX Ntercooler=Better 1/4mile time?
Mach5WRX 07-07-2002, 09:30 PM I've seen some old posts about this...http://www.nitrousexpress.com/productdisplay.php?sku=5183&hdwt=31101&loc=101
Has anyone used/seen this used recently on a WRX. I'd like to pick this kit up. I think it would kick booty for use here in hot/humid Hawaii.
Ronin2121 07-08-2002, 12:15 AM If you are going to spend the cash. Put the nitrous into your engine instead of on your i/c and you can be sure to have a bigger smile. :D

Bingo, then add the water spray kit for those hot/humid Hawaiian days and put ice cold water in the bottle :D

I don't want to spray nitrous on my intercooler, I want to spray CO2. As fas as a water spary kit, I've looked around and I think this set up would work better. Oh well can't hurt to try it out.
I'm working on mine right now. Going to use a paintball cyl and a nitrous solenoid. Should be able to put one together for under $100. Anyhow, some guy in a white rex (didn't get his name), was using a homebrew setup based on a nos kit. Had a piece of drilled tubing mounted to his intercooler that sprayed down. Iced up the IC very quickly. His times sure were convincing, especially when you consider the mid-upper 90's temps and high humidity.

Mach5WRX 07-08-2002, 02:09 PM I was thinking of using a cheap nitrous kit and a burner from a gas BBQ I found at Sears.

Mach5WRX 07-08-2002, 02:39 PM Great minds think alike:lol: :D
Leonardo 07-08-2002, 02:46 PM True, but I'll make min to spray the top and the bottom so it's well iced, cuz if you spray the top, the bottom is still hot.

Mach5WRX 07-08-2002, 11:51 PM Should be fine if you don't do a crap load of runs all at one time.
tmarcel 07-09-2002, 10:27 AM The benefits of running CO2 over the IC should be far more COST effective vs. NO2 with similar results I would think.
Mach5WRX 07-11-2002, 06:02 PM Well my mind is made up. I'm going to get this kit. Anyone know where I can pick one up for cheap?
The only place I can find this kit is on the nopi web site, and they want $80 to ship it to me!

Why do you say this? I'm ignorant of this CO2 stuff. I looked here (http://www.burp.org/co2.htm#tanks) and it states that CO2 is $5.00 per lb. Nitrous costs me $4.00 a lb. Of course cost varies. Also, the website I provided said this:
"DoT regulations and Compressed Gas Association standards state that all tanks, steel or aluminum, used for the storage of CO2 which measure over 2 inches in diameter must be hyrdostatically tested every five years.
Hydrostatic testing consists of inserting the tank into a water filled containment vessel and increasing the pressure to five-thirds (5/3) of it's rated pressure. If the tank fails, as in the picture to the right, it does so in the water filled container designed to contain the blast."
Nitrous bottles do not need to be hydrostatically tested.
Again, I'm ignorant of all the CO2 stuff so I am posting these questions. Thanks for any feedback.
ChicksDigWagons 07-11-2002, 07:43 PM I can pick up 20oz of Co2 at my local paintball place for $5, you can pick up a 50Lbs bottle for ~$50+$100 deposit I think for the bottle. Last I checked nitrous was $40 to fill up a 10lbs bottle.
Plus Co2 is much more widely availible. As for the Hydrostatic testing, it's just regulation. Co2 is very safe to handle, the gas is typically around 800psi, and most tanks have a burst pressure far in excess of 3000psi, with a 2000psi burst valve. Plus you can pick up empty tanks for cheap and they are highly availible.
I'm also pretty sure No2 tanks need to be certified in the same manner as Co2 tanks, especially if exposed to high (125 degree) tempratures.
Thats my contribution.
RobPA 07-11-2002, 09:10 PM What if any way could you actually spray the CO2 in a "Regulated maner??? is there a co2 "Sprayer" i would like to do this rather then icing the intercooler, i really like this idea but how would you phsyically "Spray" it??

This kit is made by Nitrous Express. It comes with..... - Complete kit including 5lb bottle, stainless steel bottle brackets, 16ft -4 feed line custom intercooler discharge ring, nitrous solenoid, arming switch, push button and installation hardware.
The bottle is a normal 5lb compressed gas bottle.
Mach5WRX 07-12-2002, 01:19 PM Here's a picture of the kit.
Dori Dori 07-12-2002, 01:28 PM A friend of mine has it down here in South Fl.
I'm not going to post the difference in times b/c I know a lot of you will flame and call me a liar...I'll just say that the difference in times was more than I thought they would be and that it was done on the same night, back to back and that I was there.;)
Mach5WRX 07-12-2002, 01:52 PM Where did he get it from?
tmarcel 07-12-2002, 02:04 PM Okay so now that we've established that the Co2 is less expensive, then how would one piece a kit together? I wonder if the Nitrous Express kit could utilize Co2 in the bottle rather than the No2?
This would make since if that would work. Otherwise, you would have to re-invent the wheel and source the parts.
Dori Dori 07-12-2002, 02:20 PM He's a vendor...so probably a distributor...but I'm not sure at all.

From the NX web site.....For supercharged or turbo applications where nitrous is not an option, NX offers another alternative, the “N-tercooler”. Using either nitrous or "CO2" this unit can reduce air inlet temperatures dramatically. In a recent dyno test, a turbocharged Honda, equipped with an NX “N-tercooler ”, increased its baseline by an astounding 52 horsepower! If it makes horsepower, it must be Nitrous Express!
Mach5WRX 07-12-2002, 03:14 PM If some people want this kit, let's do a "group buy". Anyone up for that?
digga 07-12-2002, 04:18 PM I am interested in a group buy depending on how much cheaper the cost will be
sidewayz 07-12-2002, 06:24 PM "Nitrous bottles do not need to be hydrostatically tested."
any bottle that holds ANY form of gas has to be tested every five years....
do believe it...call N.O.S

Mach5WRX 07-12-2002, 10:46 PM It's not a big deal. I have my S.C.U.B.A tanks check every year.

Please let me know what kind of performance difference he sees using this product. I also live is S.Florida and by the time I get to race my intercooler is already warm from the stagging lanes. This may be my answer.
I promise not to call you a lier.:)

Which vendor is he? I'd like to pick one of these up soon.
thyrodent 07-15-2002, 05:12 PM I wonder how hard it would be to adapt these types of systems to use Liquid Nitrogen.
That would be really cool, of course at that temp a fast moving pebble would shatter the IC...
For all the techs and physics guys, what would happen if you tried to rig that up?

They sell them on the NX website. They go for $500. Thats a lot of money. For $989. you can get the monster top mount intercooler from Turboxs. Thats cooling effect will be there 100% of the time unlike the short blast NX will provide.
If I get NOS it will probably be going into the intercooler not on top of it.:D

The nopi site has them for like $320 bucks. They just want $80 to ship it to me in hawaii. I'm just trying to find a better deal on shipping.
Thanks.
Once again, Does any know where I can get this kit other than the NX and Nopi site?
I really want to use this kit here in hawaii to see if it helps our 1/4 at all.

Wow, $320 thats a good price. Is it a universal setup or one specifically made for our WRX?
I wouldn't want to rig it up.
I am sure it would help you in the 1/4 mile. I would love for someone to get it first and then tell me how good if works.
weric 07-16-2002, 11:48 AM Did anyone on this Forum actually tried it on a WRX ?!?! Not that we don't trust manufacturer clam but.... 52HP is that WHP ?
"turbocharged Honda, equipped with an NX “N-tercooler ”, increased its baseline by an astounding 52 horsepower!" -nitrousexpress.com
Thx !
digga 07-16-2002, 12:42 PM I contacted NX express and asked if they could produce any dyno results or how cars with this mod performed. One of their reps emailed me back and told me that a honda did indeed get 51 hp @wheels. He also told me he did not have dyno stats but if I gave him some time he was sure he could produce some. I also asked if fitting was easy for a WRX and he told me it would be simple.
digga 07-16-2002, 01:49 PM can someone tell me where the intercooler kit is on the nopi site? I feel retarded....

If you go back to page 1 of this thread Dori Dori said she had a friend down here in S.Forida that has used it on their WRX. She said it made a big difference but was afraid to tell use how much of a difference because we wouldn't believe her.
It would be nice if her friend - the one with the nx n-tercooler would post his results for us - or have Dori Dori do it.
I am extremely interested in what kind of difference it made. This could very well explain how the guy ran 12.8 @ 108mph in P.R on the stock turbo.

weric 07-16-2002, 07:16 PM If they really want to sell those "Cooler Chiller Nitrous System" they need to show us real Dyno results !!!!
Give us the numbers on a WRX and maybe they will start selling "N-Ter" kit like hot cakes.....
I'm thinking about it
n20x3whitewrx 07-16-2002, 11:48 PM i made my own kit and it seems to work well but kinda pricy.i have a white wrx with a old dry n20 kit i pieced together and added 2 nos tubes in the trunk also and the setup seems more visually stunning than power gains.but it does help when hot and humid, and when no ice time is avail.
n20x3whitewrx 07-16-2002, 11:51 PM  i also tried the n20 kit on the dyno and made 11 xtra hp. but bottle pressure was low, juice ran out.but its proof it works.maybe11hp isnt much but it increase reliability of temps
weric 07-17-2002, 11:40 AM So maybe they emptied the 5lb Nitrous Bottle on to the intercooler be able to get their clamed 52hp ?
11hp is not a big gain.

weric 07-17-2002, 02:38 PM not only you gained 4HP but I'm sure you have better gas mileage too ! 11HP is not 50HP...

TurismoLou 07-18-2002, 07:50 AM Mike from Motormatrix sells these and he had it on his car before his tranny broke and had to sell his aftermarket parts to get a new tranny. He claimed he picked up 2/10th's in the 1320, and he sells them for about $350. They provide great service, I bought an uppipe from them and I won't hesitate to do business with Motormatrix again.
Mach5WRX 07-18-2002, 03:55 PM I called motormatrix today. They gave me the best shipping quote of $35 but they want to sell the kit for $399  So if I go with nopi I'll still save $30 paying the $80 they want for shipping.
I'm going to get this thing as soon as I find the best deal. I'll keep you all informed.
weric 07-18-2002, 08:17 PM Can't wait to see if it's wort it !
Mach5WRX 07-19-2002, 05:56 PM Well I bought the NX Ntercooler kit. I found a place on the big island of Hawaii that has the kit for $350 and they are shipping it for $20. $370 is the best price I've found. I should have the kit by Tuesday and hopefully it will be in my car by Friday night for the track. I'll keep you all posted. Can't wait to see if this works.:D

First impression of the kit........Well It comes with everything you need to install the kit, except instructions. After a phone call to NX tech support they faxed the instructions to me.
The cooling ring fits very nicely over the stock TMIC. There is only about 1/2" of over hang on each side. But I come back to reality quick and realize this is a "universal" kit and not made for the WRX. The outlet holes for the spray are on the outside of the ring! Not the inside like I had hoped. Which would lead me to believe this kit was made for much bigger intercoolers than my stock TMIC. So I'm going to call tomorrow and see if it's cool to drill some holes on the inside of the ring to spray more of the center of the intercooler.
So far I'm still happy and glad I took a risk. Hopefully this works out ok. As soon as I get time to do the install, I'll let you all know how it goes.

Let me know how it works out. I just installed Turboxs's new intercooler. Its a beast. My car pulls much harder in the mid range. I can't wait to test it out at the track. The NX kit may work good with the new intercooler.
Question. Where do you mount it? My intercooler now sits up inside the hood scoop where before it sat underneath.
Mach5WRX 07-24-2002, 05:39 PM Here's a up-date.
I can't use the spray ring that came with the kit, but I just got off the phone with NX. They make a ring for the WRX and they are going to send me one.
I can't use the ring that came with the kit because the spray holes are on the outside of the ring and also because of the way you have to mount the solenoid. I would not be able to close my hood.
So I should have this kit installed and be able to make my first 1/4 pass with it in about 2 weeks.
maybe.......
weric 07-29-2002, 10:20 PM and... did you try it ? is it wort the money ?

I'm still waiting to find out how it is mounted to the intercooler. What holds it in place? I'm not sure if it would work with Turboxs new intercooler. I don't have much room above my intercooler. It sits up high in the hood scoop.

MotorMatrix 08-01-2002, 06:07 PM It was my car that the NX N-tercooler kit was on. It fit under my hood with no problem and it fit my intercooler fine since it wasnt stock. My friend has a stock intercooler and it fit under his. he just put a notch in the side of the intercooler so the ring set flush on the fins.the problem that i had with it is that the bottle didint last very long since it has 32 holes on the ring. I got maybe 2-3 runs on it. I tried having the holes spray direct on the intercooler but its such i fine mist that it doesnt cool enough area. The idea of it misting over top of the intercooler is so that the air that comes thru the scoop pushes the n20 or co2 over the entire intercooler. Never the less I got 2/10 off my 1/4 mile time with it. But i got 1 full secong off spraying a wet kit thru the throttle body so I went with the wet system. Mach5,Good luck with your kit and maybe it will be better than the generic kit. Oh and the price on the kit is 335.00.Mach 5,I was misquoted by NX on the price when you called to order from us. I knew something was wrong but they swore that was the price. sorry.

Bundyboyz 11-06-2005, 12:47 AM Seriously you can buy a Co2 bottle at your local paintball shop for 30-40 at the most. Buy a grill burner kit at sears (the ring with holes goes on your intercooler) 30-40 at the most... Now all we need is a reliable solienoid (sp?) to open and close and your good to go...
Let's see some homebrew kits.
