View Full Version : OK how do we aim the headlights?

I sure miss having a couple of round clamps holding in bulbs with a couple of screws the adjust the height and lateral aiming of each individual headlight.

The high beams seem OK, but on low beam I only get a short distance ahead (the area the fog/driving lights should be covering) illuminated.

So the fog lights are pretty much useless, they just make the 10 feet in front of the car a little bit brighter, but without high beams, I'm overdriving the lights at about 35-40 mph.

I tried looking at the back of the "pod" but didn't see anything even remotely resembling aiming adjustments, can anybody help?

And if there is an adjustment, can I point the low beams seperate from the high beams? I hope so, since the highs will be too high if they come up as much as the low beams need to

The only headlight aiming on the 2002 cars is for height, and it adjusts the whole assembly, so you'll be getting higher low & high beams. There's a hex headed adjuster on the back of each light - it's also got a Philips screw cutout - than adjusts the up/down aim.

That's much of why I went to HID replacement bulbs, with no high beam. Then I replaced the stock foglights with Hella 500 pencil beams. So now I have very bright low beams, and wonderful, separably aimed pencil beams for dark roads. Of course I set up the fog light switch so it is independant of the headlights.

Bummer, that was about the worst possible case scenario I had in mind....

So it's probably back to the rocket lab for me too, let's see.....Hella, Cibie, Piaa, so many choices.....

Here's what Subaru recommends for "Old Age" Imprezas:

It's a bit different for new age Imprezas. On them you set the car 10 feet from a wall - then you look to get the "main upper line" (not the lump on the right) to be .83 inches lower than the bulb center dot on the headlights. It's page LI-11 in the Body (volume 6) manual. Maybe I'll scan it in..

Anyone ever scan this in?

I really need some adjustment specs cuz I installed some new Fogs, and somehow my headlights got knocked out of whack. I was overdriving them at about 25mph, and who knows if theyre right now.
