View Full Version : What happened to Jeff Gordon?
subaruwrx 02-09-2001, 11:57 AM Waht happened? I thought he was the best driver on earth? he can beat Colin Mcrae, Juha Kankkunen, And richard Burns with his eyes closed. But this year... I think its the car... We need the rainbow car back...

ColinL 02-09-2001, 02:16 PM I don't watch NASCAR, but IMO what happened to Jeff is that the sport is that competitive. There is some evidence that NASCAR hamstrings those with large leads just to keep it ultra-competitive... ill-timed yellow flags thrown for "debris" on the track, etc.
Fred Zaplitny 02-09-2001, 04:50 PM Yup. What Collin said.
It's just that competative and NASCAR is always changing the rules to make it that way. If you want to watch someone dominate a race, watch Schumey or Mikka crush the field in a Formula One race.
I'd like to see Gordon cross over into CART or F-1. Then we'll see what he's made of!
Bonzo 02-09-2001, 06:14 PM bernie would love nothing better than to have Jeff Gordon race in F1. Their were rumors in the past that he was goin to test F1. JG in F1 would bring a a ton of US money and sponsors with him along with a hole new crowd that will watch f1. Bernie love $$
4wdrift 02-10-2001, 01:37 AM Jeff who????

Eric SS 02-10-2001, 01:49 AM ummm... What do you mean what happened? The season hasn't even started yet...
Eric
Dan_E 02-11-2001, 10:54 PM Better yet...Throw ol Jeff in a Rally car, and maybe it'll bring WRC to the states! http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/biggrin.gif Thats a stretch... http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/rolleyes.gif
The WRC needs to represent! (being that its the WORLD Rally Championship) http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/smile.gif

auricom 02-12-2001, 08:32 AM i can't believe you guys are comparing a nascar driver to Rally and F1!!! think about it, jeff only turns left. put him up againt any rally or F1 driver and he'll be creamed.
cwhalgren 02-12-2001, 08:48 AM Hmm... I may might be looking to be flamed for this, but I think Jeff Gordon would out perform most rookies in F1 or rally racing. (If it’s your first year in a type of racing, you’re a rookie. Let’s not compare him to the legends right off the bat.) Not a huge fan of nascar, but its not like there racing go-carts out there…
cvalle-sd 02-12-2001, 09:22 AM Let's see... Gordon, Gordon, Gordon...nope
We have; Gardemeister, there's a "Gene" in here for some reason, Gronholm, Gonzales, Guichet, Gurney
Sorry!
Fred Zaplitny 02-12-2001, 10:11 AM auricom,
NASCAR guys do race at road courses. I'd like to see Schuey drive a Winston Cup car at Sears point. That would be interesting!
Bonzo 02-12-2001, 11:18 AM I am not saying Gordon would be good in an F1 car, I would bet he wouldn't be bad tho. He used wrestle some pretty mean open wheeled winged cars b4 he was running nascar. Any racer at the top of their league has to be a pretty darn good racer. I have also heard Dale Sr. speak quite highly of F1 and watches it regularly. It would be very interesting to have racers at the top of each area drive or compete in the others area. Put Micheal in a WoO car and Kinser in a F1, you get the idea. I would bet Schuey would come out of that deal a bit humbled, as would Kinser easily. Interesting.
chris300zxtt 02-12-2001, 11:59 AM "i can't believe you guys are comparing a nascar driver to Rally and F1!!! think about it, jeff only turns left. put him up againt any rally or F1 driver and he'll be creamed."
I highly doubt that. There is nothing wrong with NASCAR except for the fact that they are severly limiting the cars potential and slowing it down.
I WOULD like to see Gordon race F1, I think that he has the "balls" to competitively compete.
Chris
Tim K. 02-12-2001, 12:57 PM Gordon also started out where many F1 drivers have began their careers - karts.
I don't know how he would do in a rally car - I wonder if he has any Finnish blood in the ole family tree? http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/biggrin.gif
ColinL 02-12-2001, 02:19 PM I will say it again: I do not follow NASCAR. Honestly, I can barely stand to watch CART much less F1. I don't have Speedvision so I don't watch WRC.
However, Tommy B's post is ridiculous and a troll. A lack of knowledge or respect for another sport does not mean that those who participate in it are any less talented than someone else.
(However I do believe that top level F1 drivers are the best in the world, all the competition to get them there makes it so.)
TOMMY B 02-12-2001, 02:29 PM So be it I'm a "Troll".http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/smile.gif RALLY ON /////
TOMMY B 02-12-2001, 03:35 PM Colin L, TOMMY B the "troll" here, You are right I do not Respect NASCAR. I have been to many different types of races SCCA PRO RALLY (I drive my self),WRC Rally,F-1,F-3000,Cart,(only one time) NASCAR to name a few. I had the opportunity to speak to Erilk Comas (X F-1 driver) At S.T.P.R. (this a Prorally if you don't know) last year Driving a EVO IV He said to me "Rally is the hardest driving I have ever competed in and I thought I would never in my life would say this" NASCAR Claim's "we are best motor sport in the world" What Bull!!, I would have have to think thay are a TROLL's like me.http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/smile.gif
Tim K. 02-12-2001, 06:42 PM Earnhardt and Petty Jr. both did well at the Rolex this year. Petty has driven there before and will do so again. While he freely admits he is not a top driver in that particular series, he still turns in competitive laps.
Does anyone remember when Tommi got a chance to drive a F1 car a few years ago? He promptly spun it and swore he would never get in one of those monsters again. Words spoken by the 4 time WRC champ.
On the other hand you have Mika. He drove an F1 car (the two seat version) with his wife in the snow. Pretty neat stuff there (I wonder how he would do in a WRC car? He is a Finn after all)!
Also, just because you drive an F1 car doesn't make you a driving god. Some people have gotten those seats solely from the money they bring to a team - no other real qualifications needed.
Its really a mute point to discuss which driver is better from what series. Honestly its a question which will never be answered. Any driver that has achieved a championship in a pro-series is an accomplished driver.
Zanardi and Jacques both took CART championships, but only Jacques was able to garner an F1 No. 1. Now look at where Jacques is - is he any less of a driver? Is Zanardi? Is Eddie Lawson a poor roadracer because he never got the ride he needed to break into CART?
Myself, I'm not a NASCAR fan, but I'm not about to dismiss their drivers out of hand. The ones that have made the crossover to other forms of motorsports have yet to embaress themselves.

steve_d 02-13-2001, 01:07 AM He was kidnapped by Ming the Merciless in the off season....
No wait, that was FLASH Gordon....
This jeff guy his brother???
sjd
The Earnhardt boys drew a lot of praise from the road racers. Even thought I'm not an Earnhardt fan, I was glad to see the crossover. Anyone remember John Andretti when he ran NASCAR, CART and NHRA?
I'd love to see Gordon in an F1 car. Imagine the riots when NASCAR fans invade the infield at an F1 event! Tube tops, BBQ and Champaign!!
edit: It was drag racing- not IMSA. Doh!

slidewaysmike 02-13-2001, 01:50 AM TRI_tuning,
First of all, I do think that Jeff would not be some amazing driver in F1 or Rally.
But.. like it was stated before, he did start in karting, just like every F1 driver, and he also happens to do very good at the road courses whenever the Winston Cup goes to them.
He might not be "great" at F1 or Rally, but he is a pretty talented driver. I think he would do o.k.
But thats just my opinion.
Mike
TOMMY B 02-13-2001, 01:59 AM Are you HIGH ??? Jeff Gordon is so over-rated like most other NASCAR drivers. Jeff Gordon could not break the top 20 in a WRC round if his life dependented on it. This is a fact !!. Most NASCAR Drivers are driving low-tec death traps, thay are over weight for no reson and have red-neck's.
More info can be found at: NORIGHT.COM RALLY ON ////////
subaruwrx 02-13-2001, 02:51 PM this is interesting. Everyone here seems to be differing on opinions. I thought i would get flamed for my mindless ramblings of jeff gordon, but i see that there are more people here that respect other people and their thoughts. Thanks for not flaming me for posting what could have been an inflamatory post. And i think that Jeff Gordon could do pretty well on a F1 circuit, look at how often he wins on the road courses... Who won last year at sears point and at watkins glen?

63Alpine 02-13-2001, 03:18 PM I am surprised at the number of people who think that NASCAR is a a mindless sport just because (most of the time) they don't turn right. If you spend any time watching the races you will realize that theer is an incredible amount of strategy going on during the race and it is incredibly competetive. They are racing on the absolute edge of control while rubbing and bumping each other. I love it. I also love sports car racing (LeMans, BTCC, DTM, whatever), F1 (Go BMW-Williams!) and WRC (Go Burnsy!).
I agree with the person who said that the people who are on top of the heap in any class of racing are great drivers. But it all has come down to specialization. You need to spend years honing your skills to a particular type of racing in order to get to the top of the heap. The days of Mario Andretti are over. It is just to competetive to be able to jump from CART to F1 to WRC to NASCAR. Let's just enjoy them all for what they all are, great racing.
DreaminDemon 02-14-2001, 09:38 PM i could see JG doing some WRC, he did race outlaws for a number of years so he does know his way around the dirt, but he was also only making left turns. I personally think it was his crew chief that gave him the edge, hes not where he was 2 years ago, and im a big fan of his..been watching him for many of years now.
just my 2 cents.
Rallyrcr 02-15-2001, 09:56 AM With regards to the previous statement that he cant (Jeff G) turn right and cant race on road courses look at the sears point and laguna seca wins....he is the king! and even in a bad season he still manages to win the road races. I think that WRC and F1 is a stretch but him in CART?!?!!.....that would be cool cause i do think he is a hell of a talented driver.
Rallyrcr 02-15-2001, 09:59 AM I will also agree with the crew cheif remark you have to have the full pkg to win as well as luck. the best driver wont win in a car or a team that is second level.
