View Full Version : Progressive insurance? good/bad?
TriniTuner 06-13-2001, 07:56 PM Hi all,
sorry if this is in the wrong forum, but I was wondering if any of you all had good/bad experiences with Progressive insurance.
So far theyre quoting me the cheapest on my WRX. I'm also considering GEICO, Nationwide, State farm....
Thanks!
kneedragger 06-13-2001, 08:02 PM I'm with progressive and my yeary cost for the WRX and 92'honda accord is 1200$
Im 24, no tickets/accidents in 3 years
500$ deductable
full coverage
Ikonosin 06-13-2001, 08:31 PM Im with Progressive, they were alot cheaper than StateFarm was. Although being considered "High Risk" makes all insurance expensive.

ajday 06-13-2001, 08:36 PM Just curious why insurance costs more to insure two cars (for one person)? You can only drive one at a time. The insurance should be based only on your most expensive car to insure!? I have a Subaru and a Camaro (costs more with the old Camaro).
I have Geico - and am thinking of Progressive.
rexgirl 06-13-2001, 08:52 PM my experience with progressive was for the most part nice except when the stupid girl on the phone screwed up my policy change and ended up getting my policy cancelled which in turn made it cost me a load more to start it up again cause i was no longer insured...but other than that as long as you don't speak with the one incompetent one you should get excellent service. i ended up saving a ton of money and just going with NBI. But i believe with progressive, claims and all other matters will be handled much faster than with any company through NBI. Pick your evil....insurance just plain sucks(at least for those of us who never need it)
SubieFoo 06-13-2001, 09:58 PM Progressive lost my business when they quoted me twice what Farm Bureau is currently charging me. I have no tickets (yet :) ), no accidents, and a homeowner's policy. Yes, I know the homeowner's skewed the quote in Farm Bureau's favor, but twice  !?!? Come on...
Shop around, and I've found that shopping for insurance online is less convenient than simply calling up a local agent, asking for a rate quote, and comparing the national agencies through local offices. Besides, I like knowing my agent personally. Makes a big difference when you need them most.
No problems with progressives & claims out here.
For some reason, my rate with them was well under *half* of what anyone else would charge. Last time I got a quote it was only slightly less than other companys. I think someone entered some magic discount code when I got the first quote years ago.
Scooby2 06-14-2001, 12:51 AM I work for a body shop as an estimator and we call them Regressive and they are the worst company to deal with on claims,...they try to use aftermarket body parts and used parts and they don't want to pay for squat to repair the car right. More than once a customer has gotten screwed by them. My advise stay away from them and if you have them read your policy and in the fine print you will find they state they can use aftermarket parts and if you don't like that you have to pay the extra for factory. Just my $1.02 worth
Ed
Kalins1 06-14-2001, 08:53 AM My buddy had the same problem that Ed was talking about. He wrecked his Jeep badly ($9,000 worth of damage on a $13,000 car) and they refused to total it and then insisted on aftermarket parts that would not only be bad for the car but also devalue it.
phred's RS 06-14-2001, 09:05 AM I would avoid Gecko and Repressive like the plague! I have had both (in the middle of the progressive coverage) and I am not happy with either. The customer service is sloppy, you get handed around like a drunken sorority girl! Sorry if that offends anyone, just first thing that comes to mind, so it says something about my mind  .
I pay $550 for full coverage ($250 deducts) on a 2001 RS, no accidents, no tickets, and I'm 24! I got a much cheaper quote from a real live Nationwide agent, but I got locked with them when I started coverage on my old Camry, then switched. I'm leaving as soon as I can!

Agree with you!!!
Scooby2 I work for a body shop as an estimator and we call them Regressive and they are the worst company to deal with on claims,...
They made my A$$ hurt four times in the past,
- screwed me on a theft, only paid out low blue & nothing for all the $5000 extra parts & paint I paid an extra $2000/year to insure against that.
- didn't pay off the EX's car when it was stolen, now I owe $2500 on a car I never drove and no one even has any more.
- wouldn't pay for rental car damage after I was cut off & hydroplaned up a curb & into a stop sign (they stiffed me for the deductable too!)
- took 10 1/2 months to OK a claim for someone sideswiping my car, because it was "driveable", BEFORE I could get it repaired.
THOSE GUYS ARE BASTARDS!!! STAY AWAY!!!
BTW: for all you who are saying, *** is this guy doing not switching the first or second time...this all hapened in a matter of months, before I could get the policy changed.
Try Mercury Ins. or Commerce West Ins.
michaelu 06-14-2001, 10:14 AM Used Progressive as a high-risk driver from '92-'97. Premiums were reasonable, and claims service was very good - prompt, fair, adjusters kept me informed.
TriniTuner 06-14-2001, 10:25 AM Thanks for all the advice guys, but I'm still confused... some of you all have good stories, some bad.
anybody have anything to say about state farm or nationwide? my dad has nationwide and he has had great service from them so far.

taxcider 06-14-2001, 10:31 AM My forty percent of a nickel:
I am over 25, no crashes or tix since '94, and geico was much cheaper (about 30 percent) than progressive. I had my integra stolen in march, and they were very cool about the whole claim (i was ready for war, but they treated me courteously and fairly, and I don't feel screwed). I would recommend them (I don't work for them, I promise!).
Years ago, my nx2000 was totalled by a clueless soccermom in a minivan, and she was covered by Allstate - it was a nightmare for me, even though she was ticketed and there were witnesses. I would avoid them - if they fight that hard to pay a legit claim, it would suck if something happened to your car.
All of them are pretty much snakes, I reckon, but geico was at least non-venomous!
Charge 06-14-2001, 10:32 AM I have All State, no complaints here. As for Progressive, a lot of my friends used them when they first bought new cars, started paying their insurance, etc...because they were so cheap. Then one friend got in an accident. Turned out he only had $30,000 in medical, and the person in the car he hit already has $50,000 in medical. He's being sued for the balance. My 3 other friends who had Progressive found that they all had low levels of coverage.
I keep about $250,000 in medical (for the other person, like $500 for myself), $250,000 in collision/liability. It only cost about $100 more a year to up from $100K across the board. My friends had like $20,000 in liability. You can exceed that in one wreck, easy, if you hit a luxury car/SUV.
Just make sure the dollar amounts you get covered for are decent, otherwise the low payments will do you no good.
Neil
TriniTuner 06-15-2001, 01:43 AM As a conclusion, I went to my local Nationwide agent. it seems that they will apply the same discounts my father gets, eg. multi-car, long time customer, to me! This couldnt happen with another company. :D
So the price comes down to just above Progressive's quote (by about 30 bucks), and seeing that my dad has only had good storys of nationwide's service, i signed the papers etc. So, when the car comes in i'm set and ready to go.
thanks for all the opinions everyone.
