Hey guys,

I want to get rid of my stock ECU, and was wondering which stand alone ecu by HALTECH I would need to purchase. Also, where can I find a good price on one, and what is the exact name of it? I saw a couple of variations, which one is used as a stand alone manager on the GC8, 2001 2.5RS?

Thanks.

PS. I did search, but came up with nothing solid.

The E6K is what you need.

http://www.haltech.com.au/Products/ECUs/ecus.html

You should be able to get one around $900-$1000 new, not sure where.

Yes, the E6K is the one.

Retail US pricing is about $1300, minus MAP sensor and O2 (IIRC). Not sure on the pricing you can get elsewhere, but if you're local, I have the name/number of a shop that can get you one.

O2 sensor is only required as a tuning aid and for closed loop fuel control. OEM sensor works fine if you want to use it. You do need a GM MAP sensor though, but they're only ~$60.

I'm running an E6K in my car and it does a good job considering it cost about as much as the host of piggybacks it replaced. $1300 is for the kit which includes most of the required sensors (many of which you won't even need but are included regardless) and a harness. If you know someone in Australia they could buy one for you there and ship it since they end up costing us about $800 American down there. Otherwise you can order them directly from Haltech USA or any of the dealers you find at www.haltech.com

I don't understand how you could not have found anything from a search for 'haltech'. I've had numerous threads regarding this ECU in the past year. You need to search looking for 'Haltech' in the thread title, that may help.

So this uses MAP insted of MAF? I was under the impression MAF is better for a turbo application. How does the Haltech compare to the Link system as far as programming?

Thanks

It uses MAP... I don't believe it can even use MAF, though some other ECU's can.

Honestly, I haven't read anything solid on whether MAP or MAF was better, but to determine just how much air is getting in from the manifold, MAP is much better. I don't see a reason that MAF wouldn't work, but there is a delay between it's response and the volumetric effeciency of the motor changing.

The WRX motor actually uses the MAP sensor to reference it's boost/fuel cut rather then the MAF flow numbers. Same with the old Legacy's. I've scaled a MAP down on an old Legacy turbo with a potentiometer and all of a sudden it could push 5, 6, 8 more lbs. of boost depending on the pot's adjustment.

Also if there are any leaks between the MAF and TB you'll run rich because some air is escaping when the ECU thinks it's on its way to the cylinders. Now if we were to mount the MAF right on the TB it wouldn't be a bad idea except for the vibration prone to the block.

OTOH a MAP can run the engine even if the intake falls off since it's reading manifold pressure right at the source, or as close to it as you can get. The only thing that can go wrong is a leak on the vac line, but if you mount the MAP right on the manifold you won't have that problem, though a vac leak would still cause the car to run funny.

There are give and take for both, but I think with how much of a POS the old MY99 MAF was there really isn't much of an argument for keeping it. I know this all too well

So all I would need is the E6K Flying Lead Harness Package, and I would be all set as far as engine management? I am planning on using a WRX turbo and intercooler, Subachad's up and down pipe, WRX injectors and a bigger fuel pump. Would I also need a EBC?
$1300 seems like a prett good price for a stand alone, as long as that's all I'll need.

You need a MAP sensor from a turbo car in the junkyard, too. I got mine off a Chrysler somethingorother and it's a 2bar.

Fred - If you're seriously looking at it, I can get the unit a bit cheaper then that.

you should call haltech and inquire about the new E11 . Its supposed to be head to head with Motec but much more affordable .

Don't call Haltech USA about the E11, I'm sure they're clueless. If you really want to find out about it, go to www.rx7club.com and into their forums under ECU's and Haltech. There are 2 posts about it now.

I'm just gathering info right now Nick. If I choose to go the Haltech route, I will let you know. Hmm maybe I should take a road trip to check yours out.

Just an update, but in my case, I've decided against Haltech (horrible tech support and sales department in general, and other technical issues) and went with the good ole' Link system.
