View Full Version : Today I am one with the essence of Subaru...
beachbum 04-05-2001, 10:42 PM There's no real point to this post, I'm just really happy. It's Subaru related, so I figured it belonged in the general forum. http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/smile.gif After nearly a year of waiting, I finally got my AWD finished a couple weeks ago. I've slowly been pushing the limits so I can get used to it, and today I had a great opportunity to test it out. It was raining, and I found myself in a large, empty parking lot. Whoops, how did I get here? http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/wink.gif Anyway, I spent some time trying to get my Subie to spin out, understeer, or just plain behave badly. I tried every bad driving trick in the book, and I just couldn't unsettle it. Every slide was a perfect 4 wheel drift. My car seemed to be reading my mind and always corrected itself just as fast as I could think about it. I always thought you guys were exaggerating just how good Subaru AWD is. If I can help it, I'll never own a FWD car again.

FuJi K 04-05-2001, 11:02 PM how much power are you putting out??? you gotta have at least 165hp or more if you wanna do doughnuts..
so put a larger sway bar in the rear, raise the spring rate in the rear to cause over steer, pump up the PSI in the rear tires also. this should help cause it to oversteer
After you finish having fun you can put then aat there original settings.

omahasubaru 04-06-2001, 05:43 AM I think he's got an L which he converted to AWD so it's probablly a 2.2L What size rear bar are you running?? If it's the stock 13mm, then yup, you won't be spinning out much at all.
So how hard was the swap??? would you do it again??
Hope to catch you around... BTW World of Wheels tonight, me and a few others are meeting at StereoWest to head down there to check it out tonight, if interested, call me at home. I PMed you my number.
smacksube 04-06-2001, 07:22 AM I can do donuts in my rs with just an intake. Well donuts when it's either wet or on the grass, or in the dirt. Donuts on pavement when it's dry is a relatively rwd thing. But I did see an evo do a maaaaaad rwd burnout/donut combo, it was soooo crazy.
beachbum 04-06-2001, 08:09 AM Yup, I have an L, but it's a 1.8L 110 HP. I wasn't really trying to do donuts, I can barely do them in wet dirt (not quite mud) http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/wink.gif . I was just so impressed by the way the chassis handled, even if I purposely did something really stupid like slamming on the brakes in a hard corner, for example. About the rear bar... That's one thing I don't quite understand. I don't have one! We'll see what happens when I get new tires (fairly soon), but until I get more power, I may just leave it off.
About the ease of the swap... If I had this project to do all over again, I would hold out for an AWD wagon with rear disc brakes. That would have made things so much easier. That said, nothing I have done has really been that hard, it's just taken a lot of time. Not to mention more money than I should have spent. http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/wink.gif I did the rear end about a year ago. All things considered, that was really easy. The tranny etc. was done by John at JC Sports, and he did a great job. Unless you REALLY look, you can't even tell that it's not factory.

gtguy 04-06-2001, 08:13 AM You guys are lucky. With Dunlop 9000s, P1s and DMS Golds, I can't get my Legacy GT wagon to break loose, even in the rain, unless I do something TOTALLY heinous.
I long for my Blizzaks, where I could drift in the dry. http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/smile.gif
