View Full Version : CEL fix from Scoobysport
corallo99 10-02-2002, 09:41 PM I have a US spec 2002 WRX with no cats. I wired up the CEL fix from scoobysport and the CEL light is still on. Is there anything i did wrong, I followed the directions precisely. Anybody have an experience with this product?
Davenow 10-02-2002, 09:46 PM did you reset the ECU?
corallo99 10-02-2002, 10:53 PM Well i disconnected the battery and totally unpluged the ecu cause i was cutting wires, so yeah it was reset.
STi_Pete 10-03-2002, 12:59 AM How long did you diconnect it for......
Easiest way is, Disconnect the NEG terminal, depress the brake for about 30-60 seconds. Reattach the NEG terminal and BAM your ECU has been reset.
Then if your fix didn't work it IIRC I have read it takes 4 full operating cycles with the same malfunction for the CEL to come on. GOOD LUCK
corallo99 10-04-2002, 01:01 AM It was disconnected for like 45 minutes. I then plugged it all back in and it came on like 150 miles later. Does anybody actually have any expeirence with this product and the wiring. Thanks for the help but i dont think its a matter of disconnectig the battery.
rlavalle 10-04-2002, 01:57 AM I had a CEL after swapping out my exhaust for a ScoobySport system too... but it turned out to be a CEL from false EGT readings. Later, the EGT sensor died and the car wouldn't run until the sensor was unplugged.
You might try disconnecting your EGT sensor (plug is under the plastic the black plastic cover in front of the passenger side strut tower).

Unless you're positive that the CEL is a cat efficiancy code then I would get the code pulled just to make sure it's not something else setting it off.
rlavalle 10-04-2002, 11:02 AM Oh yeah... you'll need to add a resister to the plug going to the wiring harness to eliminate the EGT CEL.
Do a search to find the correct value.

SilverBoosted 10-04-2002, 11:43 AM In corallo99s defence we pulled his codes with a subaru scanner before the scoobysport mod . The only code in the system was a low cat efficiancy code. No other codes were present. His EGT sensor was reinstalled into the PDE uppipe and has given no codes so far. I doubt hes got a new code since the scoobysport mod... Poss the scoobysport part is defective???
corallo99 10-04-2002, 05:04 PM Im pretty sure that it is the cat code. I did pull the code before the CEL mod and it was the 0420 code. So i doubt that by coincidence that i have a new code all of a sudden. I never had any other codes. The instructions that came were for RHD cars and did have the changes written for LHD cars but the diagrams of the harnesses were a little differant.
Seems like few people actually have this product. Is there anybody out there that does have it???????
18431 10-05-2002, 10:39 AM The Scoobysport fix followed by a CEL has been addressed elsewhere but you will need to search. The Scoobysport fixes the 0420 code but has for some people resulted in another code, which I cannot remember offhand. On my car, this secondary code may be related to the uppipe leak I have on and off, though. I'm so used to looking at CELS I forgot to reset the ECU this week after fixing my leak.
rlavalle 10-05-2002, 11:42 AM I should have mentioned in my post that I have the ScoobySport CEL mod as well and it's working like a charm.
After I installed the PDE Up-pipe and ScoobySport Turbo-back, I got a CEL. I added the ScoobySport CEL eliminator, but got a CEL back after 150 miles. I didn't read the code, so am not sure which it was.
Anyway, the car went into limp-nowhere mode at a track day and was later diagnosed as having an EGT sensor failure.
As I understand it, when you add an up-pipe, the EGT sensor gets the full blast of exhaust instead of being somewhat protected by the stock up-pipe's cat. So it often fails. This is what happened to me.
Reset your computer, then read the CEL code when it returns. Or install the 79 cent resister after unplugging the EGT sensor.
It's not a coincidence to get an EGT CEL after an up-pipe install along with the Cat efficiency CEL... it's cause & effect. Lack of Cat action triggers the Cat efficiency CEL while a failing EGT sensor triggers the EGT CEL.
Good luck,
Russ
corallo99 10-06-2002, 12:30 AM Russ, thanks a lot dude. That made a lot more sense. I will now definately get the code pulled.
So as far as the egt sensor failing when people do the relocation of it does that make it fail also? People have also said that removing the cat lowers EGT's. What actually makes it fail, the velocity of the air or the increase in temp (if there is an increase) Thanks dude.
Oh and i had no cats for like 3 months with the CEL cause of the backorder on the cel fixes. And when i did have the code read it was only the 0420.
rlavalle 10-06-2002, 01:13 AM Hi corallo99,
Not sure what exactly causes the sensor to fail. The guy who diagnosed my problem (Sean from Wentworth Subaru in Portland) said that this happens often with catless up-pipes.
Good luck,
Russ
corallo99 10-08-2002, 10:49 PM Ok. Went to Subaru today and I had the code pulled. It is nt the 0420 code it is the 0136 code for a bad sensor the full thing is bank 1 sensor 2. So what do I do now? Is that code just saying the sensor is bad? I doubt the sensor went bad obviously it has to be related to the no cats or the CEL fix.
lstepnio 10-08-2002, 11:10 PM If I recall correctly some folks have reported the same problem using the Scoobysport CEL fix mystery box a little while ago. You might want to take a look at this long thread and see what you come up with in regards to details: http://forums.i-club.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=160817&highlight=scoobysport+cel+fix
Have you considered keeping things simple and using the $20.00 Pony Express CEL fix?
http://www.ponyexpressperformance.com/wrxmileliminator.html
A bunch of WRX folks seem to be really happy with the Pony Express CEL fix and I have yet to see anyone reporting any ill effects. :)
corallo99 10-08-2002, 11:50 PM That post was interesting but didnt really help me find out how to fix the 0136 code that I have.
lstepnio 10-09-2002, 12:08 AM My advice based on personal experience and information supporting my experiences documented in the thread I mentioned before I would suggest picking up the Pony Express CEL fix and removing the Scoobysport mystery CEL fix box. I'll be willing to bet you won't get the 0136 code or the 0420 with the Pony Express fix. You could also consider just removing the Scoobysport fix and see you start tripping a 0420 again w/o the 0136 and if that's the case it you basicly proved the Scoobysport fix is causing the 0136 CEL.
You did read the whole thread, right? It's like 5 pages long and does not start to get meaty until you get to page 2 or 3. :o
Let us know what you decide and how it works out. Good luck!
edit: check this out too: http://forums.i-club.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=255578
corallo99 10-09-2002, 12:22 AM yeah i read all of it. Im pretty sure it is the black box causing the the 0136 code. I just wanted the best of both worlds with no CEL's at all. I might go with the pony express or the ILP fix then.
Before the CEL box fix i only had the 0420 and now i have the 0136 also, so it must be the box causing it. I just dont feel like pulling the box to see that the code is just the 0420 code again.
Thnaks for all the help.
lstepnio 10-09-2002, 12:32 AM I'm curious when you say "the best of both worlds" what do you mean? I have yet to see any data supporting the unpopular opinion that the rear O2 sensor is used for anything other than monitoring the cats. It would seem to me that if there was any truth to the opinion that the rear O2 was used to adjust fuel there would be data hinting towards it if not clearly supporting it.
I don't think the Scoobysport fix is doing anything special and until we see some data hinting otherwise I don't think you should worry yourself. :o
ILP Performance.com 10-09-2002, 12:39 AM yes our fix is availble in wire in and plug in.
wire in is currently selling for $19.00
plug in is 57.75 (comes complete with the harness to replace the stock unit)
guarenteed 100% p0420 free operation
Thanks for your time

Austin 10-09-2002, 01:28 AM As I said in your PM, your 0136 code is due to the scoobysport fix-it box. You can send it back to scoobysport for another fix-it box, but you may get the same error code again.
When I was running on the stock ECU, my CEL fix was very simple - a piece of black electrical tape over the Check Engine light.
MudBoogers 10-09-2002, 07:56 AM i'm in the exact same boat as you wrt SS CEL fix black box potentially being the cause of the P0136 CEL code... I have sent at least three or four emails to Ken C. and NEVER received even one response on this, which is why I think I'll go w/ponyexpress or ILP fix, as well, and hopefully resolve this annoyance...
WHTWRX 10-09-2002, 12:41 PM So if catless up-pipes like to burn out your EGT sensor, is this a really bad thing? What happens to the car if the sensor fails? I just added a PDE pipe, I need to know what to do at this point. I do have a cel, and I'll get the code pulled soon to see what it is.
corallo99 10-09-2002, 09:30 PM lstepnio, when i say the best of both worlds i mean no 0420 code and no 0136 code. At this point i might just pull the ****ing bulb form the check engine light. Anyway i guess the next step is to talk to ilp performance.
WHTWRX as of now the EGT sensor is fine. We are mostly talking baout the second o2 sensor.
Thanks everyone
WHTWRX 10-10-2002, 11:42 AM Could someone please explain the implications of losing your EGT sensor? Is it a CEL, or does the car stop running?
rlavalle 10-10-2002, 01:15 PM Originally posted by WHTWRX

When my EGT sensor failed after my PDE Up-Pipe install, my symptoms were the following:
Car would start & idle, but if I gave it any gas, it would stall! Flashing CEL too.
I ended up being dead in the water 200 miles from home. Went back in another car that was with us and had the Scooby towed to a dealership.
Funny thing was... I could have gone on my way had I known that unplugging the EGT sensor would have let the car run! It was in a mode where the CPU thought the engine was on fire.
Fun!
WHTWRX 10-10-2002, 02:04 PM So how did you fix this problem, did you just replace the sensor? I'm kinda pissed I put this PDE pipe in not know that it can leave me stranded.
Now I don't have much confidence in driving the car.
Do you think your driving habits/mods caused the sensor to fail?
ILP Performance.com 10-11-2002, 02:23 AM we have several cars on the road with our P0420 fix and a 2.2k fix on the uppipe EGT with ZERO problems, in addition you can remove the small yet present restriction that the EGT probe causes in the uppipe the bolt to fill the probe hole is availble at any auto parts store.
thanks

tuca33 10-11-2002, 02:50 AM I am installing a SS Exhaust next week.
Since my car is JDM,,i think i will have no problems changing my uppipe(as the stock unit has no cats).
but i am worried about the turboback,,i will run a catless system.
How can i be sure to have no CEL??Buying the ILP?
Thanks
Tuca

Wait, so if I can just unplug the sensor and stick in a bolt, does that mean that if the sensor dies, my car will still run?
Or do I have to physically unplug the connector before it fails to avoid getting stuck on the road?
Further, what would cause the EGT values to go into a danger zone? I solo2, but don't track or drag. Ideally, I'd rather have a very high temp EGT sensor, does someone make one?
PunksWRX 10-11-2002, 03:40 PM I've been running the Scooby Sport fix on my car without any CEL's for a few thousand miles now. Works great! Just make sure the connections are all tight and you are using a good ground.

corallo99 10-11-2002, 08:32 PM Punks WRX what ground did you use?
OK now im confused is the 0136 code that im geting in bank 1 sensor 2 from the 2nd ot sensor under the car or from the egt sensor?

Rattler 10-13-2002, 07:51 PM I have had a PDE uppipe in since July. I also have the following: Stromung cat'd downpipe, Prodrive muffler and BSC-id (set at 15.5 max boost). I never had a CEL until about a week and a half ago. I was on th highway for a little bit when it came on.I cleared it by just unhooking the battery and hitting the brake pedal for a few seconds. I put it back and went a few days until my next run on the highway. Wham. It came back on. I am gonna go to Autozone and have them pull them code tomorrow. It didn't have any CELs until it started getting cold.
I will post what code I got. I hate CELs. Thats why I went with the Stromung cat'd downpipe.
Rattler 10-14-2002, 07:45 PM When I went out and started my car today, no more CEL.
corallo99 10-15-2002, 06:52 PM As of now it seems like the scooby sport takes care of one but gives you another code (no 0420 but a 0136)
Does the ILP take care of both?

I think getting any code with the ScoobySport box is the exception. Mine works perfectly.
I'm sure that many ScoobySport CEL Eliminator users (like myself) have no CELs. People are more likely to complain about a problem than to post "My CEL Eliminator is working fine".

AndyHidley 10-16-2002, 07:30 AM 0136 is an O2 trouble code.. The ECU compaires the values of the front O2 sensor vs. the rear O2 sensor and if there is not the correct difference due to a CAT between the two, then it signals a MIL. I dont know how it knows weither its the CAT or the O2 sensor. but that is why your now getting 2 MILs
Any one heard of this problem? ECU is throwning 4 codes, the 4 for cylinder misfire p0301, p0302, p0303, p0304. Any body have a clue what could cause this? Any help would be great.
