OK, this is WAY TENTATIVE, and will depend on location avail. but here is the schedule we are looking at for 2001..

march 4
July 3 (yuck, way hot, and the holiday, input?)
Sept 2 (in prescott at the new fairgrounds)
Oct 6 or 7 (with the Prescott Forest Rally)

let me know if i step on any other big event dates that I may not know of...

I am still tracking down sponsors so if anyone knows of any (Bud has been a big help, thanks) let me know..

Cool Bill. What cities are you considering for March and July?

Bill.B
10-17-2000, 08:30 AM
I haven't tied down the locations yet, but I am looking for one on the west side and one on the east side. If we can find a permanent home for the event though it would be better. (that is the plan for the 2002 season)

XT6Wagon

how much space do you need?

Also would anyone be interested in having it in New Mexico?

How much room is needed for a good course? Surface?

Red-Imp

Bill,

Here's a suggestion. Instead of doing one event a quarter, how about compressed calender? I think the only reasonable locations you could find for a July event would not be in the state of Arizona. http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/wink.gif

How about something this: one event in each of September, November, January, and March. Or maybe two months back to back (say October and November or November and December) with a month or two off then two more months back to back (January and February or February and march)?

It's just to hot to do much of anything in the summer in AZ.

That's my $0.02,

-Bud

PS: Have you tried any Subaru dealers for sponsers yet?

Bill.B
10-18-2000, 07:12 AM
XT6, you need a few acres to do it up right, we have definately done it on less. I'd probably make the trip out to NM to run (I have some top secret, covert, Tarmac rally road inspection to do out there anywho) but someone else would have to org it. The surface should be good hard pack dirt with minimal rocks and it needs to be flat and level.

now, the schedule.... a compressed schedule is a great idea. I would like to keep the Sep Oct dates and was thinking about March and April. It would have to be April 1 though...

Red-Imp

top secret, covert, Tarmac rally road inspection
...in NM none the less. That wouldn't have anything to do with the WRC, now would it? http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/biggrin.gif

I like the idea of an April-Fools rally. The September 2nd date might still be a little warm. Maybe that one should be up North somewhere.

The Sep and Oct date will be in Prescott at the new fairgrounds.

No chance of trading Oct for April in Prescott? (Start and end the season in Prescott.)

Any ideas for locations around Phoenix/Gilbert? I haven't had a chance do do much looking, personally.

definately not Oct (PFR 2001) but maybe Sep... Don't know if the new digs in Prescott will be done by then though.

I'm from SW NM. Between the state line and Lordsburg(Hell), NM on I-10 there are some areas that might be suitable. Or maybe across the Chiricaua Mountains in Mexico would be even better, and the drive there is great!

having the event actually in Mexico will not be possible (insurance, govt intervention, etc) but out in the boonies may be viable... do you have any contacts for land owners out there?

Its about 30 miles SE of exit 34 on I-10. There's not much around except that abandoned town. I don't know what kind of companies usually sponsor rallies, but if we could get Phelps Dodge to sponsor, it would be great. The town has only been empty about 8 months, and there are a lot of houses and apartments that we might be able to stay in for free. If it doesn't work out though, I could show you a dozen more possible locations within 100 miles of the lakebed.

Depends on where you want to have it. There is a dry lakebed that might work well, called Playas. It is owned by Phelps Dodge, but they shut down their smelter out there over a year ago. 3 miles away is an abandoned town. If you are interested, let me know. I may be able to work something out with them where we can use the bowling alley, the park(which has a large pit barbeque and serving area - the company used to roast whole cows at a time and serve free BBQ beef). It might be cool - a deserted town full of Rally fans! Anyway, let me know. If that doesn't interest you, and you find somewhere in SW NM you want to have it, I can probably help with the land owners(NM is a small state, everyone knows everyone, and my dad is especially well connected among the ranchers and farmers who own most of the land). If you head down there to check it out and want to give me a call, I could show you some areas that might work well. Let me know.

There is a BMX track in north Phoenix that has a fairly good sized lot. It's on 7th st just south of Happy Valley. I took my car out there one night when no one was there. It's pretty level, a little bumpy, and has some small rocks (gravel to 2" around), but not too bad. I go ride out there all the time, maybe they would be willing to rent the lot or something. There's a water truck, outhouses and snack bar and other equipment. If you like, I can get you the track operators number, Bill. We have special races with all kinds of wierd stuff, so a rally-x doesn't seem too far fetched. If you want to scope it out, it's open 6:30-8:30pm on Wednesdays, and 6:30-10:30 Fri and Saturdays. I'm usually out there on Wed and Some Fridays. If you go look for a BRP 01 RS sedan.

Bill.B

yeah, the number and a name would be cool. I'll try to get out there this weekend or next wed.

Bill,
I'll make a point to be there next Fri. Lately it's been rained out, so I haven't gone. The track number is 623-582-0114. There is only an answering machine, but you can check if the track will be open at least. Call out there around 5 the day you're planning on going for the latest scoop. I'll get you the track operators home phone when I get a chance.

When the track lights aren't on, it's hard to see, but normally you can see the lights from 7th st. at night. There is a road just north of the canal called Alameda, it leads right to the track. Click this link for more info: http://www.blackmountainbmx.com/

Um... I hate to be the prophet of doom, but I'm starting to have a few doubts about using the BMX track.

From their web site:

http://www.blackmountainbmx.com/tori_johnson.gif

The world-famous Black Mountain BMX track is home to the ABA Winternationals. The track has one of the smoothest racing surfaces you'll find anywhere, meticulously maintained by the Black Mountain Crew.

This brings a couple of questions to my mind.

1. Do we really want to drive over those jumps? I mean... it would be a blast, but we had a hard enough time getting some of the local chickens out on a horse track. http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/wink.gif (And, I'm afraid I might have to join them on this one.)

2. Do they really want us tearing up their "meticulously maintained" BMX track with our cars?

It sounds cool in theory, but holy cow!

Red,

Sorry to mislead you, but no way could we drive on the track! We wouldn't even make it up the starting hill. The track is surrounded by a huge parking lot o' dirt. That's where I was thinking. It's quite flat and at least as smooth as prescott downs and no sand. There are some natural berms and paths to weave in and out on. Not as big as prescott, and may be too small, but you never know. Auto-x is run in parking lots, after all.

It had right at 1,000 miles when I ran today. Had a ball. We did find out that tires make more of a difference than a swaybar does though. Bud is still smarting from the a$$ whipping he received today. Actually it was pretty close. Bud was running re92's with an 18mm bar, and I was running Yoko A520's with a stock bar. I beat him by a few tenths but my PAX time will be better that that because I ran GS and he was FSP. That will change for next time however. The rest of the Arizona group should come out next time. Running autocross is a ball. http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/biggrin.gif

Cool guys. One of these days I'll give it a shot. I've rally-x ed twice now, so I might as well. I was recovering from the Nevada trip this time, which was awesome. The rally-x was nothing like Prescott. It was way slicker and smoother. The track was awesome, much faster speeds, but it disentigrated as the day progressed. I'm sure you guys will hear all about it.

Bill/#522,

Personally, I liked the Prescott rally-X course. It had some soft stuff, some fast hard-pack, and even a few "yumps." My only complaint would be that we were a little close to a couple of fences and buildings. Otherwise the variety is a good thing. What do you think Ron? You drove both.

yeah, the courses will resemble the Auto-X courses at EFA. They will be nice, but technical. There will be some fast sections, but to much spped is unsafe, and I don't wanna get anyone hurt (physically or in the pocket book)...

Bill

#522
11-07-2000, 02:26 PM
to answer one of your questions Red, I liked them both for different reasons.

Prescott- more technical, flowed WELL, traction was good, could drift and keep the tires spinning most of the way, and it got better and better (except the last 2 turns-sandy)

Jean Dry Lake NV- FAST, flowed ok, more gratuitous powerslides, almost zero traction, the track got worse throughout the day and times got slower.

Some may not like this, but the rollover was not the tracks fault. I watched several of his runs, and he pushed it hard. The trucks CG was higher than our cars by far and that could have happened anyway, even at a lower speed. My friend had his Tacoma is Prescott and after watching and riding with me said if he drove that track and didn't take it easy there, he could flip real easy. I just think he exceeded the limits of his vehicle. None-the-less, I feel real bad for him, and I hope he doesn't loose the whole truck.

Bill,

I'm not sure what EFA means (sorry, I'm frequently a moron), but I think you did an outstanding job in Prescott with very limited resources (on both the rally and the rally-X). I'm sorry I haven't been more help in locating a course in the Phoenix area yet, but I'll keep looking as I have time.

I'm a very concerned about recent events in Vegas with talk of 70 mph drifts and rolled pickups. Not cool at all! I'm beginning to wonder if that event was SCCA sanctioned. With that in mind, I want to thank you for taking the time to do the right thing in Prescott. I'm sure you'll do nothing less next season. Hopefully you'll have more assistance. Let me know if I can help.
