In the instructions for the button, one wire is supposed to hook up to the "starter coil". I was wondering if i had to splice into the ignition/starter (??) or if i could splice it into the ecu if there is a signal for the starter.

any help would be greatly appreciated :D

Thanks!

If you would have purchased the Zero sports push button starter it would be installed and working by now :) The Zerosports comes with a true plug and play harness useing factory connectors and the red push button fits any of the switch blanks on the dash or console. This system plugs in with no wiring at all. When I get time I will unplug it and take a picture of the harness so you can see which two wires need to be spliced into.

GimpWRX -

If you take off the plastic cover on the bottom of the steering column (1 screw on the bottom, then gently pull down) you'll have access to the back of the ignition switch (driver's side of steering column)
Look at the individual soldered terminals....the one closest to the floor is the one you want. It's either black w/ a yellow tracer, or black w/ a white tracer...
You can cut and splice into this wire, then it goes to one side of your push button switch. The other side of the switch can be wired to any hot wire that comes on when the ignition key is turned to the "On" postion (NOT start)
No relay needed, as this just sends low current to the starter relay, which then operates the starter....
This is how my P B switch is wired, and it works flawlessly....

Hope this helps......

anyone know where to get the Honda S2000 "Engine Start" button on-line?

This might be a dumb question but, I will ask anyways. Once you have the start button installed will the car still start when the key is turned to the "start" position, or only when the button is pressed?

Gahh. Yeah, when I opened up my steering column to play around, it did look about this simple. Is it really this simple for someone to hotwire my car? Do people really have to post this stuff?

I think that's the point of connecting the other side to a hot wire that's only active if the key is turned to on... so you have to put the key in.

Still, it's not hard for any schmoe to find an always-hot wire and connect it to the right spot.

OK, so all I did was take a momentary switch, splice one end into the 'ON' wire as hot and the other end into the ignition wire. It worked but my switched fried out after about a week. Wassup wit dat? I'm assuming that it has to do with the fact that the whole time I was driving, one end of the switch had hot input that had nowhere to go. Solution?

It's basic electronics that a switch can't get fried when it's open... the electrons aren't going to leak out or build up or anything.

What's likely happening is that there's a lot of current needed for the circuit, and every time you open and close the switch it's frying the switch a little bit. The solder connections on the back of the key unit do look pretty hefty, so I'm pretty sure it's a current issue. Just look for a switch that's rated for a higher amperage (maybe 10 amps? or 25? I don't know for sure...), and if you're using any extra wire, make sure it's of a larger gauge.

Please use a relay in your starter button install. All of the S2000 starter button instructions I've seen outside of the NASIOC call for the use of a 30-40amp relay in conjunction with the button. Here are a few examples:

http://www.iluvmyrx7.com/3rdgen/how-to/s2000button.htm
http://www.miata.net/garage/pushstart/
http://www.angelfire.com/mac/brb/brbindex.html

At least one set of instructions went so far as to say it would be very dangerous NOT to use a relay and would, at the least, shorten the life of the button. My thought is it's better to be safe than sorry.

Anyone have instructions for a Subaru? How come the Miata folks have this thing figured out perfectly? Would it be a similar installation?

Go to this thread (http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/showthread.php?threadid=304595) for more info on a WRX install. You won't find the detailed instructions shown in the Miata and RX-7 installs posted above, but it does help with wire identification. I'll be using the Miata instructions to do this install on my car in the next week or so and expect a trouble-free result. (fingers crossed)

back from the dead

is there a way to wire it up to were it thinks there is a key in the ignition so all you have to do is push the button. maybe not the safest, but w/ like 2 hidden fuel cut off switches, and a keypad for the start like the transporter...it would be cool and convient. Was lookn at the undercolumn and saw 2 wires that go into a white thing in the cylinder on the pass side...is that the sensor or wat. I'll be sure to post keypad pics when i get it working :D

Been awhile since this thread has seen the light of day. To answer your question... yes, it can be done. In my car as in the Miata instructions noted above, I start the car by turning the key to the "run" position before pushing the starter button. Turning the key to the "run" position simply makes a connection that brings the starter button online allowing it to turn over the starter motor. The issue is that it also fires up the fuel pump and several other accessories (correct me if I'm wrong). Leaving your car constantly in the "run" mode would likely waste your battery at the very least.

FWIW, my install was more trial and error than engineering prowess on display. The end-result has worked perfectly for over a year and has great coolness value. I was VERY ready to get my head out from under the dash when I was done though.

Looks awesome - If you dont mind me asking, where did you get the plastic bezel shaped to hold the button?

it looks like the stock console piece for the lighter? the chrome ring comes on the s2000 start button.

i might have to do this now, looks nice!

Correct Tobey. You can find the S2000 starter button at this link (http://www.handa-accessories.com/s2000-03.html) towards the bottom of the page. Cost is about $35. I adapted Miata instructions (see above) including the use of a computer 3.5" floppy drive wiring harness to plug into the back of the button as well as a relay. You need to use a relay because the button is only rated at 2 amps and will burn up quickly without the use of one. The starter button simply takes power from the cigarette lighter harness and uses that power to close the relay. This crosses the two wires that are normally only crossed when you rotate the key to the start position. Now all you have to do is turn the key to the "run" position and let the button do the starting.

To install the button you'll need to do the following: remove the stock cigarette lighter, enlarge the hole slightly to accept the shaft of the button, dremel 2-3 ridges off the barrel of the button so it's smooth, cut a notch in the hole to allow the button to properly orient itself without rotating over time (this will make sense when you see it), wire it up. The wiring aspect was the head-scratcher for me. It took the longest and was the least fun. Just know that I DID NOT cut any wires. You'll find a harness plug under the dash running off the side of the steering column that connects four heavy-gauge wires. I separated this plug and wired the relay in at that point. This allows me to easily revert to standard key startup. The only irreversible issue is my cigarette lighter hole is larger than stock. I'm sure that could be resolved somehow though. Sorry I didn't take the time to do a proper write-up. Maybe in the Spring when it warms up again...

Do yourself a favor and read the Miata instructions. Also do a search on Yahoo for "s2000 starter button" for more excellent info. It isn't all that difficult and will help you bond with your car... ;)

Has anyone just tapped into the starter wire leading to the ECU instead? Those with remote starters: what output wire are you tapped into?

Streetman

How's about that proper write up now? I'm about to do some cutting and wiring, and feel the need to do this. I put a start button in my Acura Legend when the ignition fried on me. Instead of $65 from accura, I got a $2 button and $5 relay to do the job. No need to get so fancy I spend $35 on a damn button. But damn, that's got the cool factor all over it.

I'm thinking wiring up the "on" position to one swich, and the "start" button to another. Come in, flip a swich, and hit a button. However, that whole stearing lock issue is one I've never tackled. I just like the idea of flipping switches and hitting buttons like I'm in an F16. Can I mount two buttons that have to both be pressed on the roof liner?

Bumping an OLD thread,

I've got my relay and my s2000 engine start button, has anyone documented the mod on an impreza, and has anyone seen any issues with wiring this up along with a turbo timer?

Streetman
07-25-2005, 04:44 PM
Why would a turbo time cause issues? No problem there. The button is a temporary connecting of the circuit.

I have not seen it documented. However, I've got a remote starter that I need to install. Perhaps I'll do it at the same time and document it. Don't look for anything soon.

Decent movie. Main star is "turkish" from snatch (Jason Stratham ... or something). In the beginning there is a bank robbery. He drives a 7 series BMW. He starts it with a 10 digit keypad. [1][2][3]

I have a 96 GMC pickup, all the lights and stuff come on when the key is in the run position, it wont start. If I run a wire from the hot side of the solenoid to a 30A momentary switch and run another wire from the other side of the switch back to the ignition terminal on the solenoid will this engage the starter when the button is pushed or will it just blow up?

I read the other threads without realizing it was specific to a certain type vehicle, I needed a good answer and the replies I read here were very good and I really needed good. I did not intend to offend anyone.
