View Full Version : Get rid of the ad banner.
david2z4 05-07-2001, 08:30 PM I do every thing to block these things and now one pops up in the Vendor forum http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/rolleyes.gif I nave sucsessfully blocked out over 90 ad banners but this one is being stubborn.
My Virus program does a good job of blocking the ad banners so they are just blank.

Skylab 05-07-2001, 08:33 PM My computer has no "active" virus checker, and I've never seen any banners around here. But there is that same stubborn white Scooby on the homepage, day in...day outhttp://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/rolleyes.gif.

david2z4 05-07-2001, 08:38 PM You don't get the one above at the top of the vendor forum?
[This message has been edited by david2z4 (edited May 07, 2001).]
p-car 05-07-2001, 09:05 PM Yeah...my white scooby should grace the homepage. Wha'dya say Scrappy? http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/biggrin.gif
As for the banner...yup it's there, I never noticed till you brought it up. It's just an image, not a link like most banner ads - maybe that's why your software doesn't strip it.
david2z4 05-07-2001, 09:09 PM Your right just an image. It's got to be new there. Can't miss something like that blinking and all.
Oh, boohoo. Piss and moan some more why don't cha.
Skylab 05-08-2001, 02:00 PM Oh come on Scrap! At least they could post a different pic of your car. And change the title from:
"Scooby of the Week"
to:
"Scooby of the Whenever We Feel Like Changing it to Another Car."

Zahnster 05-08-2001, 03:23 PM I nominate a pick of Lovells car blasting through the turns at ROTWR for Scooby of the decade.
Arnie 05-08-2001, 04:30 PM As much as I hate banner ads I think its only fair that this site is paid for somehow. This site is a great service to most of us and it would not be here if Nick and Alex didn't put so much time as well as their own money into it. These ads help pay the bills. And as far as I have noticed they seem to be Scooby ads anyways. Its not like we are getting ads for Barbie's Dream house on sale at Toy's R Us!
Idjiit 05-08-2001, 04:36 PM Yeah, I feel I must voice my support for the ad as well. There's no such thing as a free lunch. The collapse of the "get everything for free" internet has made this quite evident.
But I do feel strongly that they should cycle the scooby-of-the-week more often. If they don't, mine'll never make it up there. http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/wink.gif

david2z4 05-08-2001, 04:39 PM free is fine but we have been paying Alex.
At the bottom of the page is fine but I'm wearing out my mouse scroll wheel with them at the top.

Ethan 05-08-2001, 04:46 PM Dave, I see them on every page.
Oh NO! You said your PAYING him, what ever you do don't say your paying for the site. I did this and felt the wrath of Imprezer http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/wink.gif you are suppose to say your DONATING to him.
Imprezer 05-08-2001, 04:55 PM "...we have been paying Alex..."
Hehe, funny, David, very funny. Thanks a lot, but I don't know if you know, but we have only asked for the $ for the new server and we got about $2700. That was just enough to cover the cost of a nice DELL machine. And, how much did you "pay"? $20? $60? $100? http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/wink.gif
Now, the club has been running since November of 1998. Since May 1999, the club is running on a T1 line. That T1 line costs $1200 per month. Now its May of 2001. Thats 24 month multiplied by $1200. You do the math and remember, that Holy Spirit doesn't pay for that.
Banners will help us make this place better and maybe even give us some extra $ to do different fun things like contests, paid track events, etc.
David, next time, please, use your head before saying something as serious as that. http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/wink.gif
david2z4 05-08-2001, 05:09 PM I know it wasn't going to be a popular statement, but I have an opinion. Sorry, I just hate ad banners right at the top of the page. All the others at the bottom and when you submit a post are great.
Your welcome Alex.
Overtime 05-08-2001, 07:29 PM Can't complain, but it'd be nice if they were at the bottom...or if they were static old-school banners instead of this motion crap.
gossamer_monster 05-08-2001, 07:38 PM Hey if it keeps the site going, I can live with it.
Alex and Nick can`t be expected to foot the bill for a site everyone uses.
That`s 6443+ resistered users and only $2700 was donated.
I say keep up the good work. http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/biggrin.gif
*edit*
My one question would be how will this effect a sponser like BPM? What if, and god forbide they pull a J* Sp*rts. Will they get banned? Stuff like this.

Subie Gal 05-08-2001, 07:44 PM well i say...
we should charge a membership fee of $10 per year....
THAT would cover the costs... and then some...
come on Alex... doooo it... doooo it!!!

HoratioCaine 05-08-2001, 07:56 PM Whoa!
My former employer looked into getting a T-1 for internet connectivity. I convinced my boss to check out DSL instead. The T-1 would have been 800-1200/MO but the DSL is only $120 a month for similar speeds. Sure, the CIR isn't there, but even getting a DSL line with CIR wouldn't be THAT much...
dang.
Cthulhu 05-08-2001, 09:30 PM I'm with Horatio here. There are much more cost effective solutions to a T-1 line.

Hashiriya 05-08-2001, 09:50 PM Well if you don't like ads just download this:
http://www.adsubtract.com/se/features.html
It's freeware. I used to use it and works good enough. This way you don't have to see the ads but the site will keep being funded.
Sorry guys... DSL just isn't stable enough in bandwidth or uptime to use it for a web server. And as I'm sure the tech folk know... most places won't give you a static IP which really makes web hosting a bit of a fiasco.
I know it's cheap, but that's for a good reason... it sucks... it might be really fast (sometimes)... but it's not good (for real web service at least)... that is why it's so cheap. And I can only imagine the hate mail I would get if the server wasn't up because the connection was down.
As far as bad vendors having banner ads, yes we have planned for this... we are only going to have vendor banners on a monthly basis... if someone sucks they have a month in the sun... if they screw up the most we have to suffer with the banner is a month.
We really are going to make sure this banner thing dosen't become a problem, but you have to understand... running a site this large costs money, and a good deal of money... and someones got to foot the bill.
And as SubieGal suggested... I don't think any of you want to cough up a $10 membership fee each year.. so a few banner ads will have to do. And please don't tell me you would support a membership fee because that's an all of nothing... and I know all 6000+ member in not a snowballs chance in hell would pay up. I like the idea... but in reality it would never work.
-Nick
motorob 05-08-2001, 10:04 PM $10 per year sounds cheap to me. Lot cheaper than a lot of other one marque car clubs where you just get a decal and a cheesy newsletter.
Adrian128 05-08-2001, 10:06 PM Why do some people have to be so picky...? I don't have a problem with it.. it doesn't hurt me.. or my computer.. I don't really even notice it. If it's there for the betterment of this site... let's just support it. If some people are not happy with the ads.. they can always elect not to go into the site. If you don't like what you see.. don't look. http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/smile.gif
david2z4 05-08-2001, 10:13 PM I get migraines from flashing although that is pretty slow flashing. My eyes are very touchy. Sorry I started this.
PS, Thanks Nick for such a calm well worded reply. take note.
It's not necessary to flame someone and break the rules to get a point across.

John2.5RS 05-09-2001, 01:21 AM Whatever it take to pay the bills and keep this place alive.

NickSTi 05-09-2001, 03:31 AM if i were a vendor paying for an ad i sure wouldnt want it to be stuck at the bottom of the page. just looking out for the vendors
and the BPM banner is def one of the better flashing banners. it is slow flashing, black, and does not use loud or many colours.
about your migraines, that really is weird cuz like u said the banner does not rapidly change, and the colours are not loud. also the time exposed to the image is not that great (unless you stare at it loathing its existence http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/lol.gif ). maybe one fo those screen thingies (forgot what it is called) that go over the monitor would help?
