View Full Version : What's the best guard dog to have?

JePereza WRX

This is the 5th time someone has vandelized one of my family's car. This time someone jacked my dad's HIDs off his 02 Maxima @ 6:17am. We're thinking of getting a guard dog now. Do you think it's worth it? Thanks for your opinions.

Pinochle

Guard dogs can create a liability issue. If the dog were to attack anyone. Yes, even the theif that you're trying to keep away. You can be sued.

:monkey: to the US legal system.

JePereza WRX
10-15-2002, 09:15 AM
Damn so it looks like there's nothing you can do, but let the thieves keep stealing while you keep forking out money replacing the parts. Next time they should just knock on our door and we give them the money to go buy some HIDs so we don't have to deal with the repairs to other body parts that they damaged trying to steal the parts.

:monkey: car thieves that don't know how much it is to fix the shiet they left behind

Many on this forum have met my "advanced home and car security system", a/k/a my pitbull, at meets. She's a cutie! And basically harmless. But when she barks at seeming intruders, believe me, they give a second thought. (Many were warned not to pet her while she's eating steak!)

This is not the case with Paisan's dog. :p (Miniature poodle.)

Yeah that's the other option.

Looks like I have to do more research. So far a Doberman, pitbull, and german shepard look like viable candidates.

Any dog you get, that is of medium size should deter any unwanted people. I had a Black Lab that was the sweetest dog in the world, but acted like he would shred you to pieces if you came near the house. He had a very BIG bark and no Bite. Get a good mannered dog that can still look vicouous ( sp ??) and that should do.

Nhabi (my pit), like most pits has a pretty wimpy bark. And she looks very friendly because of her floppy ears. But when people see her hanging by her teeth of large sticks while her neck is tuggin away, they start to think about their arms in place of that stick.........

bedabi
10-15-2002, 10:36 AM
Well, we live in an apartment. She's pretty quiet unless she hears someone outside in the hallway. Then she gives a couple of, "I'll F you up" barks and jumps and pounds on the door real high to make herself seem bigger. But if it's someone out there following the front door buzzer, she doesn't bark, because she think's it's a food delivery!

as long as it is well bred, a doberman is a great dog. very trainable, deadly loyal and more managable than a Rotty...and (imo) more predictable than any comparably priced "guard" dog (w/ exception of an german shepard). but i think that they do not carry the same intimidation factor as a doberman. i know of an excellent breeder located in PA, not sure where you are...but they will be about 400-500 bucks. hope i helped.

that doesn't mean anything. any dog will be dangerous if it's trained to be that way.

pits who have been raised normally are wonderful dogs. in reality, smaller dogs are actually more dangerous and tempermental...my gf's sister has a sheltie and a pug. the pug is REALLY nice to people, he's a certified "therapy dog" -- but the other day, he attacked the Sheltie and had him by the throat b/c the Sheltie got a treat and the pug didn't.

if you're looking for a guard dog, stay away from Labs. they're my favorite dogs, but aren't worth a damn as protection or intimidation.:)

I'm located in north jersey. I'm about an hour away from the Crossings in PA. Is the breeder you know near there? I've been actually reading more and more on the Doberman and they seem like the ideal dog for me. I do wanna talk to people who have them to see what it's like having one and what are some of the Doberman's needs.

Are you looking for an attack dog or a warning dog (one that will wake up in the sleep if they hear a fox walking though the yard at 3AM?) that has a loud bark?

My dog's bark is loud, I mean LOUD. She's a mix between a Rhodesian Ridgeback (3 grown Rhodesians can take down an African Lion) and a Weimeraner (Another German Hunting Dog) with supurb hearing.

Both of these dogs are quite loyal to the owners.
From the AKC Site:
"The Ridgeback was bred to hunt game, but also to guard homes and protect families. This is a strong dog, but one who wants to please. He is proud, dignified, and courageous, devoted to his family, and protective and loving of children."
More on the Ridgeback: http://www.akc.org/breeds/recbreeds/rhodrdge.cfm

Here's a good read on the breed: http://www.akc.org/breeds/fb_rhodesianridge.cfm

"The Weimaraner is a big, bold dog. They are smart and their busy minds thrive on activity. They are strong and determined, needing time, space, and attention. If you want the challenges of keeping ahead of the fearless "gray ghost", and your daily activities can include your dog, you may be suited to the Weimaraner. He loves kids and is used to being a member of a family."
More on the Weimeraner: http://www.akc.org/breeds/recbreeds/weim.cfm

If you want to research more dogs, check out http://www.akc.org

You won't go wrong with either of these dogs. My family has had in the past one or two at times of each dog. The Rhodesian will wake on the slighest noise of an animal in the yard. It's amixed blessing... they like to protect and will do so at 3AM sometimes. ;)

Plus, it's a different kind of dog than the more common Shepards, Dobes or Rotties.

Most insurance companies have a problem with certain breeds of dogs. Most common are Pitbulls, Rottweilers, Dobermans & German Sheppards.

The problem only presents itself if they find out about it of course. 99.9% of companies are currently doing on-site inspections on every home that is a new client for them.

Before you get a dog... think long and hard, then wait a couple more months. I could move once every other month and it would still take up less of my time than my dog. :p I wouldn't recommend it for anyone who isn't already tied down with a house and kids. :( It might just be easier to just build a garage...

P.S. the guard dog would only be helpful if it's fenced in the same area as the car. If you park your cars in a fenced in area already, and people are stealing parts off them, then maybe Mike is right and you need to move to a new neighborhood.

My vote goes to the Bullmastiff. Just read this

http://www.digitaldog.com/bullmastiff.html

I's be a little scared if I ran into one of these. Even if it was a nice one. Also they are said to be very territorial and an excellent watchdog. With proper training and socializtion I think this dog could be a great watchdog as well as a good addition to a family. A lot of other breeds are also. I just like the look and strength of this dog,

bullmastif are reat dogs, never had one, but from the dog shows i ahve been to they are very loyal to their owners, and are real easy (they sleep, a lot).
i have one english bull dog. she barks for fun, has a tear duct popped out, and i think she is retarded. i think the only reason we still ahve her is because of how dumb she lokks, and because she makes funy noises.
i also have a rottweiler. he is extremely loyal and is a big baby. still sits on my lap and still takes up the whole bed (thats right, he sleeps with me, no sick jokes, please, errr, go for it if you want :D ). the thing with him iss if i am mad at a friend i can't have that freind come over because my dog senses this, and then attacks him (found that out the hard way). other than that he gets along very well, but he also doens't like people that are much bigger than me. they are great dogs, and if you get one from a good breeder you will never want a another type of dog. you will also eventually get used to their "purring".

German Shepherds are the smartest and most loyal guard dogs period. They are the easiest to train out of all the others mentioned. I had one growing up in the Bronx and no one ever bothered trying to rob us, even though all our neighbors were being robbed. I have a Presa Canario now and its a great dog, but not nearly as smart as a shepherd. My favorite dogs are the Ridgebacks, but they do need alot of attention. Forget the Dobie, there's a reason SHepherds are the most widely used dogs by Police, INTELLIGENCE. The only dog smarter than a Shepherd is a border Collie, but I don't think you want one of those for protection.

someone had said that they wanted info from north jersey about dogs...i live in north jersey and i have been working as a vet assistant for almost 5 years now. (i can get you some names of the best breeders around) i have seen many breeds of dogs...some i want to kick and others i want to take home with me. your best bet for not only safety of your cars but the safety of your home owners insurance. English Mastiff. they are loyal, sweet, intellegent, big, bark to boot. they wouldn't attack unless they are trained to. but if i was to go mess with someone's car and this 160lb dog came at me...damn i would get the %*&) out of there...if you want really big, go for the largest dog in the world, an Irish Wolf hound. those were the dogs they used in England back in the day for hunting humans down and killing them. (they are in Robin Hood, Prince of Theives) if you just want an alarm clock...get a little jack russell terrier...smartest dogs ...loud, annoying, energetic, ect, but really smart.

ok i am done b/sing

Well, I'm not Kelli; but I'd say a good place to start for dobes is the DPCA referral service. Go to their site HERE (http://www.dpca.org) , and follow the link. That's where we started, along with a stack of books about the breed. Just stay away from the 'backyard breeders' and any kennel in PA named Kimbertal.

Edit: also, if it hasn't already been mentioned, www.akc.org (http://www.akc.org) , for general info about all sorts of canines.
